European Future Tactical Airlifter Concepts Moving Forward
https://aviationweek.com/defense/aircra ... ng-forwardEuropean efforts to develop a future medium airlifter are steadily moving toward a concept, an Airbus official says, but he warns that if the program is to move into development, the number of nations and partner industries will need to be narrowed down.
Airbus Defense and Space is leading a consortium of European industry partners on studies for a new tactical airlifter as part of the European Defense Fund’s €90 million ($107 million) Future Air System for European Tactical Transportation (Fasett) initiative.
The partners are exploring several development streams, says Jean-Brice Dumont, the head of Air Power at Airbus Defense and Space, speaking to Aviation Week on the sidelines of the World Defense Show here.
Among the streams are the type of aircraft that the countries want to develop and the nature of the partnership that produces it.
One of the options being considered is whether they should pursue a simpler airlifter—like the Franco-German Transall—or a more complex aircraft, like a smaller Airbus A400M. The project is also exploring which nations would be interested in such a platform and when they would want it.
“The timing question is not distinct from the aircraft choice,” Dumont says. “If we go down the simple and quick route, we can deliver a capability quickly—or we can go down the technology route and deliver something more ambitious, like A400M.”
The Fasett program currently comprises some 30 companies including airframers, engine producers and defense electronics providers from 12 European countries. Dumont says that not all of these companies can develop the aircraft, however.
“If we want to develop an aircraft and be fast enough, you can be too many—we need a close number of industry partners and partner nations,” he says.
“But if you start with too many, as we have seen in other programs, it can take an eternity to get to a real definition of the need and then sign the contract. This is not what the nations want. I believe everybody wants something reasonably fast,” Dumont adds.
Another challenge is that part of the potential customer base has already decided to opt for Embraer’s C-390 airlifter. The aircraft has already secured orders from or been selected by Austria, Czechia, Hungary, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia and Sweden.
The Fasett efforts build on the back of the Future Midsize Tactical Cargo Permanent Structured Cooperation project led by France and supported by Germany, Italy, Spain and Sweden, but the latter nation has opted to acquire the C-390.
Dumont says the study will hopefully conclude with a series of options around propulsion, aircraft size and airframe system, as well as regarding which customers want what and how quickly.
Studies on a future strategic airlifter through the Strategic Air Transport for Outsized Cargo program are also quite active, Dumont says. But a clean slate design for such a large airlifter has taken a backseat, with the focus now shifting to modernizing existing assets—including teaming with Antonov to upgrade its existing An-124 fleet, which was extensively used by European militaries to take equipment to Afghanistan.

Successful testing of PLATON at CUGS

Successful testing of PLATON at CUGS
https://www.linkedin.com/posts/diehl-de ... 46208-u0sPAs part of an interim testing of the 'Combat Unmanned Ground Systems' (CUGS) project managed by the European Defence Agency (EDA), in which Diehl Defence is taking part as an industrial partner, the PLATON modular autonomy kit was successfully integrated into an AMV 8x8 vehicle from Patria. Simultaneously, the C3 fire control chain based on 'Sitaware Frontline' was set up and operated. The test campaign took place under arctic conditions in Rena, Norway.
In the scenario shown, the Patria AMV 8x8 acted as an unmanned, mobile artillery unit. Smaller UGVs based on Milrem THeMIS were used in the direct fire scenario. These systems are able to move autonomously, communicate and engage targets, making military operations safer and more efficient.
All units were coordinated via the battle management system (BMS) 'Sitware Frontline', which is used by the Bundeswehr and many other NATO countries. For this purpose, Diehl Defence has developed several applications that make it possible to control UGVs and, in future, UAVs via 'Frontline'. Subsystems such as weapon stations and sensors are also connected. This approach should make it possible to quickly integrate different unmanned systems into the existing command and communication infrastructure of future user countries. CUGS also proves that it is possible to integrate systems from different manufacturers at any time by using existing standards.

European Next Generation Rotorcraft Technologies Phase II

EU launches second phase of ENGRT next-generation rotorcraft project
https://www.janes.com/osint-insights/de ... ft-projectThe European Union (EU) has launched the second phase of its European Next-Generation Rotorcraft Technologies (ENGRT) programme, one of the two co-ordinating companies announced on 20 February.
Airbus Helicopters, which along with Leonardo Helicopters is co-ordinating the consortium of some 53 companies and institutions, said that ENGRT II will now run for three years as the EU progresses its effort to foster “strategic autonomy” in the development of future rotorcraft technologies.
“We are stepping up after the first phase of the project, transitioning from a research and technology project into a research and development project,” CEO of Airbus Helicopters Bruno Even said, adding, “More than ever we must ensure that our home nations can operate the most advanced technologies now and in the future.”
Launched in 2022, ENGRT is geared at paving the way for the future of military rotorcraft in Europe for the post-2035 timeframe, with the project exploring future technologies and also the conops of European militaries for their use in terms of the operational needs that will drive the technology development. Such needs could include, but not be limited to, speed, manoeuvrability, range, safety, survivability and ballistic tolerance, autonomy, stealth (radar, visual, and acoustic), connectivity, and manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T). It also recognises the need to avoid complexity and maximise availability while controlling costs, weight, and size.
