Airbus signs € 1.2 billion in contracts for Capability Enhancement and In-Service Support of the French A330 MRTT fleet

The Standard 2 contract provides for the capability extension of the French MRTTs, focused on connectivity as a key pillar and also self-protection capabilities. With the aim of being connected in all circumstances, including jammed environments and extreme weather conditions, the aircraft will be equipped with the MELISSA satcom station.

These new capabilities will convert the French A330 MRTT into a high bandwidth communication relay node, with command and control capabilities, and will build the stepping stone of the A330 MRTT’s integration into the future air combat cloud within the FCAS.

The first aircraft to have the Standard 2 will be A330 MRTT No. 15, whose conversion will be carried out at Airbus’ military facilities in Getafe. It is expected to be qualified for the French Air Force in 2028. Thereafter, the upgrade to Standard 2 of the remaining 14 French A330 MRTTs will take place at the Istres Air Base in France.

La DGA a notifié les premiers travaux relatifs au passage de la flotte des A330 MRTT au Standard 2

Le premier incrément du standard 2 dotera cette flotte d’une antenne de communication satellitaire MELISSA, permettant d’accéder à la constellation militaire SYRACUSE IV.

La flotte A330 MRTT Phénix disposera ainsi d’une capacité de communication haut débit, souveraine et sécurisée, associée à des moyens accrus de transmission dans le cadre de la mise en œuvre de la composante aérienne de dissuasion. Véritable nœud de communication entre les moyens C2 (commandement et contrôle) et l’ensemble de la bulle aéronautique qui l’entoure, l’A330 MRTT Phénix occupera une place centrale dans le dispositif de connectivité aéronautique.

Le premier incrément du standard 2 comporte également l’intégration d’une capacité d’autoprotection.

Les travaux de développement conduiront à la qualification sur prototype de l’ensemble de ces fonctions, avec un rétrofit de la flotte qui sera réalisé en synergie avec les activités de maintenance, au travers du marché de soutien à 10 ans qui a été notifié conjointement.
