Moldova has acquired a new tactical air-defence radar from Thales following a meeting between the French Minister of the Armed Forces Sébastien Lecornu and Moldovan Minister of Defense Anatolie Nosatîi.
The agreement is for a Ground Master (GM) 200 medium-range radar, the French Ministry of Armed Forces announced on 6 October. While at the event, Lecornu said he wanted to “conduct an audit of air defence assets” to help strengthen Moldova's airspace.
Thales had not responded to Janes regarding delivery timeframes at the time of publication.

En marge de cette rencontre, la Moldavie a annoncé l’acquisition d’un radar GM200. Cet équipement de surveillance aérienne, fabriqué par Thales, permet de détecter et de poursuivre simultanément des objectifs évoluant de basse à très haute altitude, dans tous les types d’environnement. Dans une perspective plus large, Sébastien Lecornu a annoncé vouloir « conduire un audit des moyens de défense aérienne pour aider à renforcer la sécurité du ciel moldave ».

Defense Minister Anatolie Nosatii has confirmed that the Moldovan National Army will receive a batch of assistance from the European Union, which will include air defense systems. He told reporters after a government meeting on Wednesday.
"The air defense remains a priority for us. In this context, besides the airspace monitoring systems, we found an opportunity to discuss the transition to the next stage, which concerns the direct airspace defense systems. Our task is to ensure peace and the security of citizens. So that there are no cases of airspace violations, so that drones do not explode near schools or hospitals. The safety of citizens is the priority of the Defense Ministry," Nosatii stressed.
He said that “the new air defense systems will be equipped with the functions of intercepting and destroying aircrafts, airplanes, helicopters and some models of missiles.”.
The minister said that already in the next few days, the Moldovan authorities and the European partners will agree on the transfer of the assistance, which is provided in the form of a grant.
European Peace Facility: Council adopts assistance measure to support the Republic of Moldova’s air defence capabilities (13. Juni 2024)
Today the Council adopted an assistance measure under the European Peace Facility (EPF) in support of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Moldova to modernise the country’s air defence capabilities.
The adopted assistance measure is worth €9 million, and will finance air defence systems’ short-range interceptors for the benefit of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Moldova. It complements a €41 million assistance measure adopted on 4 April 2024, which sought to modernise the defence capacities of the Moldovan Armed Forces in the areas of mobility, air surveillance, electronic warfare and logistics.
