We are pleased to announce that today,
General Dynamics European Land Systems – Bridge Systems announced today that it has received an order from the Royal Netherlands Army for three Improved Ribbon Bridge (#IRB) floating bridge systems.

The signature ceremony was held during the famous “Vierdaagse” march at Cuijk near Nijmegen, where Dutch engineers traditionally bridge the Meuse River for the marching parties. The order comprises bridge sections with a total length over 225 meters together with Bridge Erection Boats manufactured by Birdon Group, USA.

The new #IRB systems will significantly strengthen the Dutch Engineer Corps’ gap-crossing capabilities and interoperability with the NATO partners.

Birdon Set to Deliver First Tranche of Bridge Erection Boats (BEBs) to the Netherlands Army

News / By / 20 August 2024

Birdon America, Inc. announced today that its contract to provide Bridge Erection Boats (BEBs) to the Netherlands Army is progressing on schedule, with six Birdon BEBs in the final stages of assembly with delivery scheduled for the end of September. Awarded in 2023 to General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS), the contract is for three sets of Wide Gap Crossing systems, composed of the Improved Ribbon Bridge (IRB), Bridge Adapter Pallets (BAP), and Birdon BEBs. This is the first of three delivery tranches that will be completed in 2024-2025.

“We’re proud to supply the BEB as an essential force multiplier for the Netherlands Army,” said BEB Program Manager Jim Ducker. “These vessels play a pivotal role in enabling vitally important wet gap crossings, and this first delivery indicates contract completion is progressing in a timely manner.”

In addition to first tranche delivery, the full Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) package – including technical manuals and training programs – is nearing completion. Birdon will use this package to conduct training for the Netherlands Armed Forces to safely and effectively operate the BEBs. The training is set to take place in the Netherlands in the first quarter of 2025.

In preparation for the upcoming delivery, Birdon hosted a meeting in July with personnel from the Netherlands Army’s Contract and Program team and the GDELS Program Management team to verify the progress of boats currently in production and finalize the quality inspection and delivery process. During the meeting, Birdon also performed a sea trial on the first boat – hull number 007.

Birdon has established a successful track record designing and manufacturing BEBs for the Australian, Brazilian, and U.S. Armies. Globally, Birdon has delivered 462 BEBs, the bulk of which have been manufactured in its production facility in northeast Denver. The Netherlands BEBs, which are being manufactured in Denver, will feature increased capabilities to improve operations and further ruggedize the BEB including an icebreaker bow, new quick release launch capability, electric winch, and reduced maintenance and downtime upgrades for maximal operational availability.

Birdon America Inc. to build Bridge Erection Boats (BEB) for Netherlands Armed Forces

News / By / 27 July 2023

The Birdon Bridge Erection Boat (BEB) has been selected as part of the Netherlands Armed Forces next generation Wide Wet Gap Crossing solution.

On June 30th, 2023, General Dynamic European Land Systems (GDELS) was awarded the Netherlands contract for three sets of Wide Gap Crossing systems, made up of the Improved Ribbon Bridge (IRB), Bridge Adaptor Pallets (BAP), and Birdon Bridge Erection Boats. This award solidifies the combined Birdon-GDELS bridging system as the global standard for Wide Wet Gap Crossings and the go-to solution for NATO allies that require interoperability, reliability, efficiency, and performance when it matters the most.

Alongside GDELS, Birdon was invited to Nijmegen, Netherlands to participate in the official contract award ceremony where a live demonstration of the BEB and IRB took place in front of over 10,000 spectators. The ceremony featured the original ‘Polyboat’ from the 1960s, the current ‘Bootbruggenbouw’ from 1986 and the new Bridge Erection Boat.

Project US Army M30 Bridge Erection Boat (BEB)

The Bridge Erection Boat (BEB) project being delivered by Birdon is a U.S. Army series vessel production program requiring all the contractual, reporting and implementation disciplines of complex federal business. The contract also includes the provision of a full integrated logistics support package.

As the prime contractor for this ACAT II program, Birdon has designed, developed, manufactured and supported the BEB program as a US Army Program of Record since the award of the original firm fixed price, competitive contract in 2013. The statement of work for this program includes the acquisition of M30 BEBs, crew protection kits, spare parts provisions, special tools and test equipment, development of a comprehensive technical data pack, technical field service, delivery and de-processing, and on-site operator and maintainer training.

Production of the BEB in Birdon’s Denver facility has peaked at seven vessels per month with a boat coming off the production line every 3 business days. Due to our strict configuration management, quality and parts kitting controls, every BEB is identical. All vessels undergo full quality and acceptance tests by Defense Contract Management Agency (DCMA) and the end-user. Since contract award in 2013, Birdon has achieved a 100% on time delivery record and has received the highest possible Customer Performance Assessment Reviews (CPARS) ratings of “Exceptional” for the three key measurements of Quality, Schedule, and Management.
