SRBMs ausgelegt:
The Patriot Advanced Capability-3 Missile Segment Enhancement (PAC-3 MSE) is a high velocity, hit-to-kill, surface-to-air missile capable of intercepting and destroying Tactical Ballistic Missiles (TBM) and air-breathing threats.

Flight Test Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) (FTT)-23. THAAD successfully demonstrated its expanding capabilities by intercepting a medium-range ballistic missile that was dropped from a C-17 aircraft. FTT-23 demonstrated the ability to increase the defended area of a single battery and provide additional engagement opportunities against threat ballistic missiles. Soldiers of the E-62 battery were not aware of the target launch timing. This was the 16th successful intercept in 16 attempts for the operational THAAD weapon system.

In FTT-23, AN/TPY-2 successfully demonstrated an ability to detect, track, and discriminate a medium-range ballistic missile (MRBM) threat in terminal mode with THAAD in a remote launcher configuration.

THAAD provides Combatant Commanders a rapidly deployable capability against short-range (up to 1,000 km), medium-range (1,000–3,000 km), and limited intermediate-range (3,000–5,000 km) ballistic missile threats inside or outside the atmosphere during their final (terminal) phase of flight.

Ukraine’s Patriots Now Struggling To Intercept Enhanced Russian Ballistic Missiles (14. August 2025)
A surge in Russian use of ballistic missiles with enhanced maneuvering capabilities has cut into the effectiveness of Ukraine’s Patriot surface-to-air missile systems, the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) has confirmed.
However, “the UAF [Ukrainian Air Force] struggled to consistently use Patriot air defense systems to protect against Russian ballistic missiles due to recent Russian tactical improvements, including enhancements that enable their missiles to change trajectory and perform maneuvers rather than flying in a traditional ballistic trajectory,” according to a Special Inspector General report released this week.
This particular passage is cited to “DIA, response to DoD OIG request for information.”
“For example, [a] June 28 attack included seven ballistic missiles, of which the UAF shot down only one,” the report adds. “A massed attack on July 9 – the largest air attack since the start of the war – included 13 missiles, of which the UAF shot down or suppressed 7.”
The Special Inspector General report does not offer any further details about what specific types of ballistic missiles are at the source of the issue, nor about the “enhancements” that have been made to them. Whether any specific Patriot interceptors have struggled more than others is also unknown.
However, Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson Yurii Ihnat did mention Russia’s domestically developed Iskander-M and North Korean-supplied KN-23s in passing when talking publicly about this issue back in May. The Iskander-M and KN-23 are both short-range ballistic missiles. These are also understood to be, by far, the ballistic missiles that Russia most commonly employs in strikes on Ukraine.

Operation Atlantic Resolve (OAR)
Russian Massed UAS Attacks Strain Ukrainian Air Defenses
During the quarter, Russia expanded its UAS attacks on Ukraine, launching hundreds of UAVs at once to overwhelm Ukrainian air defenses, according to the DIA.56 Russia’s large-scale strikes increasingly targeted civilian areas and often included follow-on strikes targeting first responders, according to Ukrainian officials.
In many cases, the UAF was able to intercept or electronically suppress the incoming Russian UAVs, but some aircraft evaded Ukraine’s integrated air defense system.58 (See Table 2.) In addition, the UAF struggled to consistently use Patriot air defense systems to protect against Russian ballistic missiles due to recent Russian tactical improvements,
including enhancements that enable their missiles to change trajectory and perform maneuvers rather than flying in a traditional ballistic trajectory.59 For example, June 28 attack included seven ballistic missiles, of which the UAF shot down only one.60 A massed attack
on July 9—the largest air attack since the start of the war—included 13 missiles, of which the UAF shot down or suppressed 7.
In July, Russia began launching missiles and UAVs at different altitudes and encircling Kyiv before approaching the city from all directions.
According to media reporting, this did not
result in significantly more munitions reaching their targets.
