General Dynamics European Land Systems Awarded New Contract to Supply Improved Ribbon Bridge to Sweden
General Dynamics European Land Systems has signed a contract with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) for the production and delivery of its Improved Ribbon Bridge (IRB).
After recent successful summer and winter trials, the Swedish Army will upgrade part of its legacy Floating Support Bridge (FSB), delivered previously by General Dynamics European Land Systems-Germany, with the Improved Ribbon Bridge to meet the new requirements of its vehicle fleet.
Delivery of the first systems is scheduled for 2020.
The IRB can be operated as a multi-bay ferry as well as a floating bridge. It provides wide wet gap crossing capability for loads up to MLC80 Tracked / 96 Wheeled, including the Swedish Leopard 2 Main Battle Tank. The IRB bridge bays will be transported on and launched from an existing and modernized multipurpose truck.
Die Beschaffung der M3 war schon vor über 20 Jahren geplant, wurde aber wegen schrumpfender Finanzmittel und einer Streitkräftereform abgebrochen.
Darüber hinaus wird Ausrüstung für die GDELS Improved Ribbon Bridge (Däcksbro 300) angeschafft.

#GDELS – Bridge Systems has received an order for a fourth batch of #M3 amphibious bridge and ferry systems for the Swedish Armed Forces. A respective contract with the procurement agency Försvarets Materielverk was signed yesterday. With the new order, Sweden is further strengthening its wet gap crossing capabilities, its M3 fleet alone now being able to bridge 400 meters of obstacles.

General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) – Bridge Systems hat an seinem Standort in Kaiserslautern das erste amphibische Brücken- und Fährsystem M3 an die Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (SDMA) übergeben. An der Zeremonie am vergangenen Donnerstag nahmen unter anderem Brigadegeneral Jonas Lotsne als Vertreter der SDMA und Dr. Christian Kauth, Geschäftsführer von GDELS – Bridge Systems, teil.
Die nun übergebene Amphibie ist Teil des ersten Beschaffungsloses für das skandinavische Land. Mit der Auslieferung aller vier beauftragten Lose wird Schweden zu einem der drei großen M3-Nutzer der NATO neben Deutschland und Großbritannien werden und über einen Bestand zur Überwindung von insgesamt 400 Metern Hindernisbreite verfügen. Mittels Kuppeladaptern lässt sich die M3 außerdem zusammen mit den Pontonbrückensystemen IRB (Improved Ribbon Bridge) und SRB (Standard Ribbon Bridge) einsetzen.
D.h. Schweden hat vermutlich insgesamt vierzig (Open-Close-Open-Coupling Configuration) oder 32 (Open-Coupling Configuration) Amphibienfahrzeuge bestellt.
Birdon Selected to Supply Bridge Erection Boats for Swedish Army

The Swedish Defence Material Administration, on behalf of the Swedish Armed Forces has selected Birdon to supply Bridge Erection Boats (BEBs) that will provide wet gap crossing capability during military operations and support disaster relief efforts such as floods.
The first BEBs will be delivered by February 2025.
Martyn Bowden, Head of Bridging and Propulsion, said Birdon was the only bidder to meet or exceed all technical requirements with a product suited to these unique environments and capable of delivering within the short timeframe.
“Due to Birdon’s extensive BEB experience, streamlined production line, and existing supply chain arrangements, we’re able to build and deliver the Swedish Armed Forces initial order within just five months,” Mr Bowden said.
The Swedish BEB will be a variant of the latest model currently in production by Birdon for the Royal Netherlands Army, with custom modifications ensuring the BEBs meet in-country safety and legislation requirements.
It will feature a dual electric winch for faster coupling, increased operator efficiency, and safer operations, while a reinforced ice bow enables further extreme cold weather capability.
A new quick launch system allows for rapid deployment, and high operational availability is achieved through reduced maintenance and downtime upgrades.
In its primary mission mode, the BEB provides propulsion, thrust, and stabilisation to support worldwide tactical float bridging and rafting operations. It is specifically designed to provide high thrust and operate in high particulate matter environments including in fresh, brackish, and seawater. All functions of the BEB can be performed by a two-person crew. The unique and flexible design of the BEB means it can integrate with most customer-specific transport systems. Birdon has also developed a next-generation control system capable of remote and autonomous operations.
Sweden will be the first country to utilise the complete Wet Gap Crossing solution of Improved Ribbon Bridge (IRB) and M3 Amphibious Bridge from General Dynamics with the Birdon BEB. The BEB is essential for the support of the M3 Amphibious Bridge as it is purpose-built and adds the multi-purpose capability required for modern WGC needs of army engineers.
