Bahrain, Kuwait Warplanes Struck Iran in Rare Gulf Retaliation

Bahrain and Kuwait secretly sent jets to attack sites inside Iran, their first such direct retaliation against Tehran and an indication of the difficult position Arab states find themselves in as the war grinds on, people familiar with the matter said.

The airstrikes early this month targeted drone- and missile-storage depots, among other military sites, some of the people said. The United Arab Emirates—which attacked Iran multiple times early in the war—provided intelligence on targets and defensive air cover for the strikes in a sign of budding Arab cooperation in confronting Iran, those people said.

Bulgaria approves stationing of US tanker aircraft despite Iran warning

SOFIA, July 22 (Reuters) - Bulgaria's parliament on Wednesday approved the temporary stationing of U.S. tanker aircraft ​at its Bezmer military base despite Iran's warning that the ‌move would constitute complicity in "aggression and war crimes", a charge that Sofia dismissed.

"No offensive weapons systems of any type will be deployed on the territory of Bulgaria," ​Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov told lawmakers. "Their temporary presence does not ​make Bulgaria a party to the military actions," he said.

According ⁠to Stoyanov, Washington promised to "minimise the risks to our national security". Five ​mayors of towns around the Bezmer base, about 260 km (160 miles) southeast ​of Sofia, had filed complaints against the plan citing security concerns.

The government's proposal to allow the stationing of up to eight KC-135 aircraft on the EU and NATO ​member's territory was approved by 136-13 votes, with two abstentions.

Last week, Washington ​requested the deployment of the aircraft, and up to 250 military personnel, from July ‌24 ⁠to October 1, based on an agreement governing the joint use of military facilities, Stoyanov said.

Few ships risk Strait of Hormuz crossing — and none use route promoted by the US

Almost all vessels crossing the Strait of Hormuz over the past three days have used the route designated by Iran, with none recorded using the southern route near Oman’s coast promoted by the US, according to shipping intelligence group Marisks.

Seventy-eight vessels have been observed transiting the Strait of Hormuz since Saturday, Marisks said. Of these, 20 were Iranian-flagged.

All 58 non-Iranian ships transiting used the Iranian-designated route, while no ships were recorded using the southern route, which has been promoted by the United States military as an alternative to other sealanes.

The latest AIS data, which shows the position of ships, indicate that “all detected non-Iranian merchant traffic continued to favour the Iranian-controlled northern route, despite the political and sanctions implications,” Marisks said.

“The only movements near the southern side are local UAE craft and offshore support vessels rather than international merchant transits.”

Another maritime intelligence group, Windward, said Monday it had recorded just seven transits through Hormuz on Sunday, all of them via the northern route.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has frequently warned it will target ships seeking to transit the strait without Iranian consent.

Iran has redirected vessels attempting to use what it described as an “illegal and unsafe route” through the southern Strait of Hormuz, state broadcaster IRIB reported Monday, citing an unidentified “informed source.”

They “attempted to pass through an illegal and unsafe route south of the Strait of Hormuz,” IRIB said.

Amid the US blockade on Iranian ports, there were 24 tankers waiting at Iran’s main loading port at Kharg Island on Sunday — up from 21 the previous day, according to Windward.
