Sweden to buy US artillery rocket system and enter Sweden-Finland cooperation on rocket artillery
The Government is authorising the Swedish Armed Forces to procure the US High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS). In a separate announcement, Sweden’s Minister for Defence Pål Jonson and Finland’s Minister of Defence Antti Häkkänen have signed a Joint Declaration regarding cooperation on the countries’ rocket artillery systems.
The acquisition of rocket artillery will enable the Swedish Armed Forces to operate over larger areas, and with greater long-range capacity than with current systems.
HIMARS is produced by US defence supplier Lockheed Martin. The first deliveries are set for 2027. Procurement costs are around SEK 7 billion and will be financed through the Swedish Armed Forces’ regular investment plan and within the framework of an ‘opportune purchase’. The procurement of rocket artillery is part of the Total Defence Bill 2025–2030.
In parallel with the procurement, Lockheed Martin and Sweden’s Saab are signing a Joint Declaration regarding cooperation on the potential integration of Saab’s Ground-Launched Small Diameter Bomb (GLSDB) and the production of munitions for HIMARS and other systems, such as the Patriot air defence system. These are important contributions for the increased security of supply of munitions.
7 Mrd. SEK sind umgerechnet 630 Mio. EUR.
Häkkänen: Finland lobbied Sweden to acquire Himars rocket launchers
"In NATO, equipment from rear-line countries is used for the benefit of front-line countries," Häkkänen says over the phone about the benefits of the acquisition for Finland.
According to him, Finland has been lobbying Sweden for a year to acquire heavy construction launchers compatible with the Finnish system. Häkkänen emphasizes that they are “very important” for the defense of the Nordic region.
According to Häkkänen, one of the main focuses of NATO policy is strengthening national defense capabilities with allies.
“Now Sweden is taking a clear step forward in this.”
Last spring, Finland negotiated with the US company Lockheed Martin to establish Europe's only rocket launcher maintenance center in Finland. The center is being launched in Tampere.
"The point was specifically to bring this expertise in rocket launcher maintenance and updating, spare parts expertise to Finland, and thereby create crisis resilience," says Häkkänen.
Häkkänen hopes that in the coming years Finland will be able to negotiate with other European countries that have heavy rocket launchers. In his view, this would benefit Finland's security of supply, but would also bring employment to the defense industry.
According to him, the technological expertise gained from this can also lead to "all kinds of further opportunities".
According to Häkkänen, Finland has thorough training expertise in rocket launchers, which is also beneficial for Sweden.
