Last week, a delegation from the Estonian Ministry of Defence visited the facilities of GDELS Santa Bárbara Sistemas in #AlcaládeGuadaíra (Seville) and #Trubia (Asturias) to see first-hand the capabilities of the company and, in particular, the #ASCOD IFV combat vehicle.

During the visit to Alcalá de Guadaira, the GDELS Santa Bárbara Sistemas team presented the capabilities of the ASCOD IFV prototype, selected by Latvia for its HUNTER programme. The Estonian delegates had the opportunity to see it in action and even try it out for themselves at the test track, located at the factory. At the Trubia plant, they were able to learn about the manufacturing process of the Hunters commissioned by the Latvian government.

Estonia halts €500 million combat vehicle procurement to fund air defense
The Estonian government decided Thursday to halt a €500 million procurement program for new combat vehicles, redirecting the funds toward air defense, drones and unmanned systems, Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur said.

Experience from Ukraine, market conditions and military advice from the commander of the defense forces led to the decision to suspend the program, Pevkur added.

The new combat vehicles were scheduled to arrive in Estonia in 2029 and 2030.

"To move forward with other necessary solutions and extend the service life of existing combat vehicles, this decision had to be made now," Pevkur said.

Estonia plans to extend the lifespan of its existing CV90 combat vehicles by up to 10 years. While this will also cost a significant amount, it is still many times cheaper than purchasing new vehicles, the defense minister noted.

Pevkur said that combat vehicle prices are currently expected to rise, which is already reflected in offers.

"The role of heavy equipment on the battlefield is decreasing. Hence the advice from the commander of the defense forces that, over a 10-year perspective, it is not reasonable to replace them, but rather to upgrade existing vehicles," he explained.

Valitsuse pressikonverents, 9. aprill 2026
Ja kolmas teema, mille ma siin praegu ära markeeriks, on üks põhimõtteline otsus, mida me täna Vabariigi Valitsusele koos kaitseväe juhatajaga tutvustasime.

Elik Ukraina sõjast me õpime iga päev. Need õpitunnid, erinevad turuanalüüsid ja kaitseväe juhataja sõjaline nõuanne on viinud meid otsuseni, kus me hetkel peatame uute lahingmasinate soetuse.

Käime ajaga kaasas ja vaatame, mida me Ukrainast õpime.

Government approved the 2026 state budget (24. September 2025)
In order to strengthen the defence capabilities of Estonia, at least 5% of the GDP will be allocated to national defence in 2026 in accordance with NATO criteria – that is €844.5 million more than this year. Investments in air and missile defence, drone capabilities, as well as long-range and precision strikes are increasing. An air defence brigade and new engineer battalions will be established, C-RAM systems will be developed to protect critical infrastructure, and training and exercise areas will be expanded. The development of defence industry parks will also continue. Approximately 50 million euros is planned for the design and preparation of the park in Pärnu County.

€, davon 825 Mio. € für Investitionen.

Estonia cancels CV90 MkIV IFV procurement plans

The Estonian Centre for Defence Investments (ECDI) confirmed to Janes on 14 April 2026 that Estonia has cancelled plans to procure the CV90 MkIV infantry fighting vehicle (IFV). Estonian Public Broadcasting (Eesti Rahvusringhääling: ERR) reported on 9 April that Defence Minister Hanno Pevkur had told it that Tallinn had cancelled the EUR500 million (nearly USD590 million) combat vehicle procurement programme in favour of air defence and unmanned systems.

An ECDI spokesperson told Janes, “Estonia has decided to cancel the replacement of CV90 infantry fighting vehicles with new platforms. Approximately EUR100 million will be allocated to the modernisation of the CV90. Planning for the use of the remaining allocated funds is currently ongoing. The proposal for their use will be submitted by the [Estonian] Defence Forces [EDF] as military advice from [EDF] commander [Lieutenant General Andrus Merilo].”
Asked by Janes if Estonia's existing CV90s would be upgraded, the ECDI spokesperson responded, “Estonia has decided that, at present, it is more rational to modernise the existing infantry fighting vehicles rather than replace them. Modernisation will ensure the sustained preservation of capability and the efficient use of resources.

"The modernisation pf the CV90will include - first and foremost -an upgrade of most critical obsolete parts (mostly electronics), armament, and targeting systems. The stock of spare parts will also be increased to ensure long-term sustainability. In addition, new systems will be integrated to addtess contemporary threats, including drone detection and electronic warfare capabilities."
