Keir Starmer has said he’s accepted the US request to use British bases for defensive strikes against Iranian missiles

In a video shared on social media the Prime Minster said: “Our partners in the Gulf have asked us to do more to defend them, and it’s my duty to protect British lives.

“We have British jets in the air as part of coordinated defensive operations which have already successfully intercepted Iranian strikes.

“But the only way to stop the threat is to destroy the missiles at source. In their storage depots or the launchers which are used to fire the missiles. The US has requested permission to use British bases for that specific and limited defensive purpose.

“We have taken the decision to accept this request - to prevent Iran firing missiles across the region, killing innocent civilians, putting British lives at risk and hitting countries that have not been involved.”

Britain grants U.S. permission to use military bases for strikes

Greg Miller

LONDON — In a reversal, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said his government has granted U.S. forces permission to use bases in the United Kingdom for strikes against Iran.

The about-face, two days after the United States and Israel attacked Iran, means that the Air Force can now fly missions from strategic locations, including Diego Garcia, a British air base in the Indian Ocean with long runways used by American B-52 bombers and other military aircraft.

Starmer said the U.K. accepted a U.S. request for use of British air bases “to prevent Iran firing missiles across the region, killing innocent civilians, putting British lives at risk and hitting countries that have not been involved.”

He also said British jets joined the conflict in a limited defensive role and “already successfully intercepted Iranian strikes.”

The British Defense Ministry confirmed Monday that its forces responded to a suspected drone strike at the Royal Air Force’s Akrotiri base in Cyprus.

Starmer and other European leaders initially emphasized that their militaries were not involved in the U.S.-Israeli operation. In a statement Sunday, he seemed to acknowledge that the stance was shaped by regret over taking part in the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

“We all remember the mistakes of Iraq,” Starmer said. “And we have learned those lessons.”

Still, he cited concern that Britain has at least 300,000 citizens in the region surrounding Iran and that granting U.S. permission to use RAF facilities was done “in accordance with international law.”

While providing an update on the war to Parliament on Monday, Starmer sought to draw narrow distinctions of the nation’s role in the conflict. He said British bases could be used only for “defensive” U.S. operations but added that the category includes strikes on Iranian missile sites being used to attack British positions and allies.

British jets were also carrying out missions, Starmer said, and had intercepted Iranian drones heading toward a coalition base in Iraq housing U.K. personnel. In a separate attack, he said, an Iranian drone had come within 800 yards of British personnel at an RAF base in Cyprus.

“But it is simply not possible to shoot down every Iranian missile and drone once they are launched,” Starmer said, saying it became necessary to allow U.S. aircraft operating from British bases to target missile sites inside Iran’s borders.

Diego Garcia has been a point of contention between Starmer’s government and President Donald Trump, who has chided Britain over an agreement to restore sovereignty over the Chagos Islands, which include Diego Garcia, to Mauritius.

Starmer acknowledged that Trump has also “expressed his disagreement with our decision not to get involved” in the initial wave of strikes on Iran but said he had concluded it was not “in Britain’s national interests.”

https://edition.cnn.com/2026/03/03/poli ... nbJIm9Fqrw

Secretary of State Marco Rubio Remarks to Press
QUESTION: Mr. Secretary, what do you make of the War Powers resolution that’s being considered here in Congress?

SECRETARY RUBIO: I mean, the Congress votes on those. They can if they want. There’s mechanisms for it, and we’ve complied with the War Powers Act even though we believe it’s unconstitutional, as has every other administration. Every other president has found the War Powers Act to be unconstitutional; nonetheless, we notified the Gang of Eight, which was an appropriate mechanism by which to notify Congress. We sent a notification within 48 hours, the way the law requires. I’m here today to have, I don’t know, my sixth or seventh briefing before the entirety of the House and Senate, which is far more than I ever got from any administration in the time that I was here, certainly when I was a member of the Gang of Eight. And so we’ve complied with all of it. We’ve over-complied with the law and what it requires. This is an action by the President to address a real threat, a real threat. This is hostilities designed to eliminate a threat to the safety and the security of the United States and to our allies.

All right?
https://www.state.gov/releases/office-o ... o-press-7/
Trump’s letter to Congress justifying the strikes on Iran outlines no imminent threat to the U.S.

President Trump has told Congress he ordered the United States military to carry out sweeping airstrikes on Iran, killing its top leaders and triggering counterattacks across the region, to advance American national interests and eliminate Iran as a global threat, contradicting his administration’s claim that the attack was necessary to respond to an imminent threat.

In a legally mandated, unclassified letter submitted on Monday, Mr. Trump declared that the military operation was designed to “neutralize Iran’s malign activities.” It was sent amid shifting explanations from senior administration officials about the justification for the strikes, calling into question their legality as the House and Senate prepare for votes this week on whether the president needs congressional authorization to use force in Iran.

The letter said the mission targeted Iran’s missile stockpile, nuclear program and navy, aligning with the objectives outlined by Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Capitol Hill on Monday. And it laid out a sweeping range of strategic goals. The president wrote that the strikes were undertaken to protect the U.S. homeland and forces in the region, and “advance vital United States national interests, including ensuring the free flow of maritime commerce through the Strait of Hormuz.”

The letter made no mention of plans to overthrow the current leadership in Tehran, even though the president called on Iranians to “take over your government” as the United States launched its opening salvo on Saturday morning.

It did echo the rationale put forward by Mr. Rubio on Monday that the United States acted over the weekend because Israel was prepared to strike with or without the Trump administration, and that Iranian counterattacks would target American troops.

The letter said the American-Israeli bombing campaign on Tehran, which killed the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was carried out “in collective self-defense of our regional allies, including Israel.”

But the president on Tuesday rejected the idea that Israel forced his hand in the lead up to the strikes.

“No, I might have forced their hand,” Mr. Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.

Mr. Rubio also sought on Tuesday to walk back his own suggestion a day earlier that the strikes had been made to confront the “imminent threat” that an attack by Israel would prompt Iran to target U.S. forces.

Officials with access to U.S. intelligence have said Mr. Trump has exaggerated the immediacy of any threat Iran posed to the United States.

The letter also affirmed that no ground forces were used in the strikes, but suggested that the United States could be engaged in a prolonged military operation against Iran, an outcome that top Trump officials including Mr. Rubio have not ruled out.

“Although the United States desires a quick and enduring peace, it is not possible at this time to know the full scope and duration of military operations that may be necessary,” the letter stated.

The letter specified that the administration sent it to Congress in an effort to keep lawmakers “fully informed” about the operation, in compliance with the war powers law. The Senate and House are gearing up to vote in the coming days on resolutions that seek to block Mr. Trump from continuing to attack Iran without approval from Congress under that law, but Republicans are expected to block the bills.

Iran strikes U.S. military communication infrastructure in the Mideast.

March 1

Bild
Satellite imagery shows smoke rising from a building at Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia.

Iranian strikes conducted over the weekend and on Monday damaged structures that are part of or near communication and radar systems on at least seven U.S. military sites across the Middle East, according to a New York Times analysis of satellite imagery and verified videos.

Visuals show damage on or close to radar systems used to track incoming ballistic missiles, satellite dishes and radomes, which are weatherproof covers that protect sensitive equipment used by forces to communicate over long distances.

U.S. military communication infrastructure is highly classified, making it difficult to determine which exact systems may have been affected. But the targeted locations appear to indicate Iran was aiming to disrupt the U.S. military’s ability to communicate and coordinate. Iran has attacked the U.S. military’s communication capacity as recently as last June, when it struck a Qatari base it hit again over the weekend.

Strikes potentially affecting these systems also occurred on military facilities in Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

A press officer for United States Central Command declined to comment on the strikes.

Bahrain

Video verified by The Times showed that an Iranian one-way attack drone struck a radome on Saturday in the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet headquarters in Manama, Bahrain. The base is the United States’ primary hub for coordinating naval operations in the Middle East.

Satellite imagery taken of the headquarters the following day showed that at least one additional radome was destroyed.

Bild

The two demolished structures were AN/GSC-52B SATCOM terminals, which play a key role in facilitating high-capacity and near real-time communication for the U.S. military.

Qatar

Satellite imagery of Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar taken on Sunday afternoon showed that a tent surrounded by satellite dishes had been destroyed and some of the dishes most likely damaged.

Bild

Al Udeid is the U.S. military’s largest base in the Middle East, accommodating thousands of troops across an area nearly six miles wide, and serves as the regional headquarters for the United States Central Command. Iran hit a radome the American military used for communications with a ballistic missile at the same base during the 12-day Iran-Israel war last June.

Kuwait

Satellite imagery of Camp Arifjan in Kuwait shows that by Sunday morning at least three radomes had been damaged or destroyed.

Bild

Fifty miles northeast, at the Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait, at least six buildings or structures adjacent to satellite communications infrastructure were damaged or destroyed, according to imagery captured on Sunday.

Bild

The same area of the base was hit again, with two additional buildings near the satellite equipment heavily damaged, according to satellite imagery from Tuesday.

Saudi Arabia

On Saturday night, the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps announced that the Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia had been targeted with missiles and drones. The following morning, satellite imagery captured a mile-long smoke plume rising from a building connected to the site.

Another satellite image captured on Tuesday showed the structure was largely destroyed.

Bild

The building that was hit is close to a radome and sits within a fenced-off area roughly six miles east of the main base, indicating Iranians may have been specifically targeting a communications section of the site.

United Arab Emirates

Low-resolution satellite imagery captured of a military installation just outside Al Ruwais in the United Arab Emirates on Sunday shows several structures were damaged.

Bild

A radar system known as AN/TPY-2, which is used to detect and track ballistic missiles and is crucial to coordinating missile interception, appears to have been stationed next to one of the buildings that was hit since June of last year. It is unclear from the imagery if the radar system itself was damaged.

The target of a strike over 100 miles east at Al Dhafra Air Base in the United Arab Emirates was less clear. Satellite imagery captured on Sunday shows that tightly clustered buildings and tents within a compound about the size of a football field were heavily damaged. Imagery from previous years shows satellite dishes and antennas at the site, but it’s unclear if they were still there when the strikes occurred over the weekend.

Bild

The base was struck again in the same general area, according to satellite imagery captured on Monday.

The Times previously reported that additional American military facilities in Dubai, Iraq and Kuwait were damaged during the weekend strikes, and newly captured satellite imagery shows damage at the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan. But the structures damaged at these locations don’t appear to be near communications or radar systems.

Das AN/TPY-2 wird man nur schwer ersetzen können. Anscheinend wurden vom US-Verteidigungsministerium in den letzten Jahren nur 13 Einheiten angeschafft:
Description:

The Army Navy/Transportable Radar Surveillance and Control (AN/TPY-2) radar is an integral component of the Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS) layered network of sensors. It is easily transported and can be configured to operate either as a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) Fire Unit Radar (terminal mode) or Forward-Based Radar. The forward-based AN/TPY-2 provides detection and tracking during the boost phase. This significantly reduces the uncertainty in target discrimination and reaction time, increasing the probability of a successful BMDS engagement. In forward-based mode, the AN/TPY-2 also provides acquisition and track data via the Ballistic Missile Defense System Command, Control, Battle Management and Communications and Link 16 to the Aegis missile defense system for cueing. The AN/TPY-2 used in terminal mode is an integral component of the THAAD Battery. The THAAD battery radar is capable of tracking multiple threats and multiple interceptors during engagements in the terminal phase. It provides surveillance, acquisition, track, discrimination, interceptor communications, and hit assessment data collection for fire control.

Procurement funding procures three AN/TPY-2 Radars required to complete THAAD Battery acquisitions. "Procurement Quantity" and "Flyaway Unit Cost" above represent radar systems only, but the "Net Procurement" cost above plus the Initial Spares amount includes the costs of all hardware. FY 2013 funding includes procurement of one (1) AN/TPY-2 Radar and three (3) additional Prime Power Units (PPUs), which affects the "Gross Weapon System Unit Cost". The FY 2013 flyaway unit cost of $200.050M consists of $189.873M for the radar, plus $10.177M for initial spares (depicted on P-40 for BMDS Radars Initial Spares). The Gross Weapon System Cost of $217.244 for FY 2013 is comprised of the $189.873M for the radar, plus $27.371M is required for acquisition of the three additional Prime Power Units. For FY 2014 funding includes procurement of one Float Cooling Equipment Unit (CEU), Critical Spares and long lead Transmit/Receive Integrated Microwave Modules (TRIMMs) for the Float Antenna Equipment Unit (AEU). The FY 2014 flyaway unit cost is $62.000M.
https://comptroller.war.gov/Portals/45/ ... B_2014.pdf
Last year we also continued our AN/TPY-2 (Terminal Mode) support to warfighters on Guam. We accepted AN/TPY-2 Radar #9, providing it to THAAD Battery #4, and AN/TPY-2 Radar #10. We also awarded a production contract for AN/TPY-2 Radar #12, and for additional spares.
https://docs.house.gov/meetings/AP/AP02 ... 150324.pdf
Last year we integrated, tested, and delivered the capability for the Warfighter to manage the second PACOM AN/TPY-2 radar in Japan and introduced the boost phase cue capability of that radar site into the BMDS.
https://docs.house.gov/meetings/as/as29 ... 160414.pdf
In fiscal year 2021, Congress supported the production of a 13th AN/TPY-2 radar, which will be the first U.S. production of the modernized Gallium Nitride (GaN) configuration of the system, providing greater range and discrimination.

Alleine durch die Inflationsanpassung müsste man heute für ein AN/TPY-2 mindestens 257 Mio. $ aufwenden.

Trump admin announces $20 billion reinsurance program for oil tankers during Iran war

US bomber lands in UK as strikes to 'surge'

US stealth bombers to land at British bases ‘in days’ (4. März 2026)
American B-2 stealth bombers are expected to land at British military bases “in a matter of days” to join attacks on Iran.

The UK’s air bases at Diego Garcia, in the Chagos Islands, and RAF Fairford, in Gloucestershire, are both being prepared for the arrival of the US warplanes this week.

The revelation by Western officials on Wednesday comes after Donald Trump warned Iran to expect a devastating wave of strikes.
RAF Akrotiri, a British military base on Cyprus, was hit by a drone on Sunday evening. However, the attack only caused minor damage.

The unmanned aircraft was understood to be similar to an Iranian Shahed drone, weapons which have been used extensively by Russia to bomb Ukraine, as well as by Tehran to target Israel and other states in the Middle East.

A source said on Wednesday: “Based on the type of drone and its range and ability, defence intelligence can confirm that that drone was not launched from Iran.” Western officials declined to say where it was flown from.

Britain had increased its ground-based air defence around RAF Akrotiri in the run-up to the attack, officials added. They refused to provide details, citing security concerns.

Previously, the RAF Regiment had deployed Rapid Sentry – a stand-alone system using lightweight multirole missiles (LMMs), like those used in Ukraine – and radar technology.

Air defence soldiers, believed to be from the 12th Regiment Royal Artillery, are also thought to have previously played a role in defending the base.

Meanwhile, British troops with experience working in Ukraine have deployed to the Middle East, it is understood, following requests from “multiple” countries in the region.

“The first of the team arrived in the region yesterday, and the next group are arriving today,” a Western official told journalists on Wednesday.

The official added: “The first lot are Brits who have got experience working in Ukraine and with Ukrainians and they’ll be able to offer specialist advice, particularly on how they might layer the sensing, the warning and the targeting of the drones.”

Among the additional support offered by Britain is HMS Dragon, a Type 45 missile-guided destroyer, which was being stocked with missiles and ammunition on Wednesday.

The Telegraph understands Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Knighton, the head of Britain’s military, received a request to deploy the ship at 9.30am on Tuesday.

Israel – Munitions and Munitions Support
The Government of Israel has requested to buy twelve thousand (12,000) BLU-110A/B general purpose, 1,000-pound bomb bodies. The following non-major defense equipment items will also be included: U.S. Government and contractor engineering, logistics, and technical support services; and other related elements of logistics and program support.

The Secretary of State has determined and provided detailed justification that an emergency exists that requires the immediate sale to the Government of Israel of the above defense articles and defense services is in the national security interests of the United States, thereby waiving the Congressional review requirements under Section 36(b) of the Arms Export Control Act, as amended.
The principal contractor will be Repkon USA, located in Garland, Texas. Part of the BLU-110 A/B requirement will be transferred from stock.
