Portuguese Army seeks new 155 mm howitzer

The Portuguese Army is considering procuring a new 155 mm artillery system to replace its M114A1 towed howitzers, an army staff source told Jane’s on 11 December. EUR18 million (USD20 million) has been allocated for the effort in the Portuguese 2019–2030 Military Programming Law.

Towed lightweight and truck-mounted self-propelled howitzers (SPHs) are options to replace 18 M114A1 155 mm/23-calibre howitzers fielded by the Intervention Brigade’s field artillery group and which entered service in 1983. SPHs are the preferred solution, according to the source.

Requirements for the future 155 mm artillery system include a ballistic computer and a link to an artillery command-and-control system.

Sind sie das nicht sogar zwangsläufig? Und damit meine ich nicht mal die taktischen Anforderungen des modernen Gefechtsfeldes, sondern die schiere Verfügbarkeit. Werden denn überhaupt noch moderne gezogene Haubitzen gebaut, außerhalb von Ländern wie China, wo Portugal keine Rüstungsgeschäfte tätigen kann?

Our Weapon Systems UK team secured a five-year contract to follow from a previous ten-year programme for the delivery of M777 support services for the US, Australia and Canada with the initial year funded at $17m (£14m). Following M777 deployments to Ukraine and increased interest from armies around the world, Weapon Systems UK also secured a contract from the US Army to produce M777 superstructures for spares and repairs through the foreign military sales (FMS) process. This effectively brings the M777 towed lightweight howitzer back into production.

Portugal hat mittels des Instruments EDIRPA (siehe: Beschaffung von CAESAR 6x6 durch Kroatien) ein Framework Arrangement mit Frankreich zum Kauf von Artilleriegeschützen CAESAR unterzeichnet:

La France et le Portugal ont signé le 26 octobre 2024 à Guarda (Portugal) un arrangement de coopération cadre pour l’acquisition commune de canons CAESAR.

Le Portugal rejoint ainsi la Croatie, l’Estonie et la France au sein de ce partenariat qui permet de renforcer leurs capacités dans le domaine de l’artillerie. Cette signature illustre la volonté des pays européens partenaires de répondre ensemble aux défis de sécurité auxquels fait face l’Union européenne. Ce mécanisme d’acquisition commune s’inscrit dans le cadre de l’acquisition conjointe de capacités de défense, qui est éligible aux financements de l’Union européenne (EDIRPA - European defence Industry Reinforcement through common Procurement Act).

Cette acquisition sera réalisée par la Direction générale de l’armement (DGA) française auprès de la société industrielle KNDS France pour répondre aux besoins portugais, croates, estoniens et français.

Por sua vez, Portugal compromete-se a adquirir 12 a 36 obuses Caesar, entre outro tipo de material, à França.
