Meteor's first flight on an F-35B

A US Marine Corps F-35B has conducted the first test flights of a Meteor missile. The inert missile is used to gather environmental data as part of the campaign to integrate UK weapons onto F-35.

The sorties were flown from Naval Air Station Patuxent River, made possible due to collaboration between the UK and US governments as well as organisations including the Ministry of Defence, Defence Equipment & Support, and respective industrial partners MBDA and Lockheed Martin.
While the UK is leading the integration campaign for F-35B, Italy is sponsoring integration onto the F-35A model, allowing both aircraft types to take advantage of Meteor’s inclusion.

The StormShroud is operated by 216 Squadron at RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire and supported by the RAF Regiment, comprising Regular RAF and Royal Auxiliary Air Force (RAuxAF) personnel, operating alongside other UK Defence personnel. To be effective in its SEAD role, the StormShroud would presumably need to be launched from the F-35s/Typhoons it is protecting. The announcement, however, did not refer to such a capability, and the nature of the UAV and the involvement of the RAF Regiment suggest that a different mode of operation has been decided upon.

UK Eyes Broader Nuclear Mission To Strengthen NATO Defense
Facing a new era of global instability, the UK is considering bolstering NATO’s deterrence strategy by participating in the alliance’s nuclear sharing arrangements with dual-capable aircraft, potentially through an acquisition of the conventional-takeoff-and-landing (CTOL) variant of the Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. Ministers are tightlipped, but proposals to commence discussions with the U.S. and NATO about joining the initiative are among the options in the government’s long-awaited Strategic Defense Review (SDR), finally released on June 2.
The idea is part of a grander vision to reposture the UK military to warfighting readiness. Prime Minister Keir Starmer is calling for armed forces that are battle-ready, highly integrated and more lethal.

Ministers insist that the government will carry out all 62 recommendations in the report and deliver them over the next decade. However, the plans lack detail, substance and urgency, and critics maintain that they will be challenged for resources.
For the first time, an official UK public document has mentioned adding the CTOL F-35A to supplement the F-35B, an option that could enable a dual-capable aircraft mission. The dual-capable task, using U.S. dual-key B61 free-fall nuclear weapons, would restore to the RAF a nuclear role lost in 1998 with the withdrawal of the WE177 family of UK-developed nuclear weapons. The SDR also commits to the Global Combat Air Program future fighter project with Italy and Japan.
