We are proud that our TROPHY Active Protection System has been chosen once again to protect the soldiers of the IDF, this time with its successful integration on the Barak tank.
After over five years of development and production, the Israeli Ministry of Defense, the IDF's Ground Forces, and the 401st Brigade are unveiling the future tank of the IDF – the 5th generation of the Merkava dubbed the 'Barak' tank.

The Barak is equipped with Elbit Systems' extensive solutions that include improved sights, advanced night vision capabilities, Fire Control Systems for Main Battle Tanks (MBT), E-LynX Software-Defined Radios (SDR), and the IronVision™ Head-Mounted Display for 360° situational awareness and advanced operational capabilities.

Currently the most advanced version of the Merkava in service is the Merkava Mk 4 Windbreaker.

Lieutenant Colonel Schachar (full name withheld), head of the Weapons Branch in the Armored Corps, told Jane’s on 25 July that the new tank will enhance the “user experience” of the four-person crew.

“The mission computer will be like a fifth crew member, which will improve processes in the cabin,” he said. “It’s designed to understand the situation and activate multiple touchscreens accordingly. This will form an inseparable part of the ability to conduct combat operations in closed, urban spaces.”

The new tank will have cameras that will enable the crew to see all around the tank while remaining protected inside it. This includes an Iron View helmet-mounted virtual reality display that will give the commander a virtual view through the tank and access mission information, much as glass cockpits do for fighter pilots. “We conducted experiments and found that personnel did not experience motion sickness [using the viewing screens]. On the contrary, the feedback was very positive,” Lt Col Schachar said.

Together with improved controls and a digital navigation system, the improved views around the tank will allow the driver to operate more independently from the rest of the crew, freeing the commander to focus on higher priority tasks, Lt Col Schachar added.

Brigadier General Guy Hasson, the chief Armored Corps officer, told reporters on 19 July, that the Barak will have on-board radars that tell the crew about “the situation it is in and whether it is near dangers.

Israel turns to advanced situational awareness systems to enhance Merkava and Eitan commanders’ field of vision
The ongoing wars in Ukraine and Gaza have, at times, demonstrated that the current systems in use do not provide enough support to tank commanders, especially when fighting in urban areas.

During urban fighting in Gaza, Israeli tanks have found they are more vulnerable to advanced anti-tank weapons, according to sources in the Directorate of Defense Research and Development (DR&D), a joint administrative body between the Israeli Ministry of Defense (MoD) and Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).

The sources added that the development had been accelerated in order to equip two of the IDF armoured platforms, the Merkava 4 main battle tank (MBT) and the eight-wheeled Eitan armoured personnel carrier (APC), with special loitering weapon systems to address the problem.

The experience the IDF has gained from the use of different types of loitering weapon systems brought forward the decision to equip the new version of the Merkava with this advanced weapons system which can supply data to the tank commander and then attack a selected target.

Israeli MoD sources said tests with dedicated loitering weapon systems deployed on the new version of the tank would begin soon, revealing that the new version of the Merkava 4 (Lightening) would be equipped with an improved Trophy APS system made by Rafael and a commander helmet made by Elbit that prioritises the relevant data gathered by the tank’s own sensors and others in the battle area.

An advanced main computer gives the tank’s crew the ability to focus on the most relevant targets while sharing the data with other tanks and other units on the ground and in the air.

Elbit Systems’ Iron Vision commander helmet enables a 360° view and uses combat data from the tank’s own sensors and other sources to locate and destroy time-sensitive targets.
