Sweden – AIM-120C-8 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile (AMRAAM)

WASHINGTON, July 7, 2023 - The State Department has made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Sweden of Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM) and related equipment for an estimated cost of $605 million. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency delivered the required certification notifying Congress of this possible sale today.

The Government of Sweden has requested to buy up to two hundred fifty (250) AIM-120C-8 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM); and up to six (6) AMRAAM C-8 Guidance Sections. Also included are spare AIM-120 control sections and containers; AMRAAM Test Set (ATS) telemetry kits; encryption devices; munitions support and support equipment; classified software delivery and support; spare parts, consumables, and accessories; repair and return support; transportation support; classified publications and technical documentation; studies and surveys; U.S. Government and contractor technical, engineering and logistics support services; and other related elements of logistical and program support. The estimated total cost is $605 million.

Um die JAS-39C/D bis Mitte der 2030er-Jahre betreiben zu können, wurde ein Vertrag mit SAAB zur Umsetzung eines Upgrades abgeschlossen. Die Kosten betragen umgerechnet 317 Mio. EUR. Die Vertragsausführung ist für 2023-2029 vorgesehen. Außerdem sind Optionen zur weiteren Fähigkeitsentwicklung enthalten.

Saab Receives Order for Upgrade of Gripen C/D

The aircraft will be equipped with a new version of the engine, which will enhance flight performance. A more effective electronic warfare system will also be introduced and the upgrade will create conditions for increased attack capability with a new payload.

The order encompasses an upgrade to Saab’s latest fighter radar, which provides increased performance with emphasis on enhanced fighter capability and extended detection and tracking range. It also includes an upgraded and future-proof avionic system which, among other features, enables fast software updates of the sensor function.

The capability enhancement will enable better interoperability between Gripen C/D and Gripen E, for example by the upgrade of support systems and data links. Interoperability is a prerequisite as the platforms will be used in parallel over many years.

Die JAS-39E kann die neue Lenkwaffe über eine Auswurfvorrichtung starten - die JAS-39C dagegen nur über einen Pylon. Dadurch ist es bei der E-Version möglich, die "Meteor" auch unter dem Rumpf mitzuführen.

Die schwedische Luftwaffe hat 2023 eine "bedeutende Anzahl" von Lenkwaffen des Typs "Meteor" erhalten. Außerdem wurden neue Präzisionsbomben geliefert. Der Vorrat an Luft-Luft-Lenkwaffen und Präzisionswaffen gegen Bodenziele soll in den kommenden Jahren weiter aufgestockt werden:

Gripen moves ahead in Thai fighter contest

The Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) has recommended the acquisition of the Saab Gripen E/F after an evaluation between the Swedish type and the Lockheed Martin F-16.

The commander of the RTAF, Phanphakdee Phattakul, has forwarded the Gripen E recommendation to the government, according to a report by the Bangkok Post, quoting an anonymous source.

The recommendation comes after a lengthy analysis of the Gripen E/F and F-16 Block 70/72.

Following the downselect, the government must approve any Gripen order, which must also work its way through the Thai government’s budgetary process.

FlightGlobal understands that in addition to 12 fighters, Bangkok also requires both direct and indirect offsets.

It is understood that the US government has recommended both new F-16 Block 70/72s or refurbished F-16s. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency, however, has yet to post Foreign Military Sales notification about any possible sale to Thailand.

Financing appears to be a challenge with obtaining the US fighter. According to a recent Bangkok Post report citing defence minister Sutin Klungsang, US Ambassador to Thailand Robert Godec offered Bangkok the opportunity to obtain F-16s via a loan arrangement.

Obtaining the fighters via a loan would allow more aircraft to be obtained, but Klungsang was reported as saying that the interest rate is “too high”.

Farnborough 2024: Swedish Air Force procures new weapons and aircraft

Swedish Air Force (SwAF) Commander Major General Jonas Wikman outlined his service's procurement plans on the eve of the Farnborough International Airshow 2024 held from 22 to 26 July. He told journalists including from Janes attending a Swedish Air Force Fan Club event on 21 July that decisions would be taken soon on the procurement of deep strike missiles and a C-130H replacement.

He said Swedish membership in NATO allowed the SwAF to develop deep strike capabilities.

JAS 39E bör utrustas med ett robotsystem som på långa avstånd och med hög precision kan bekämpa prioriterade markmål. Det skulle höja tröskeln för en motståndare att inleda militära operationer mot Sverige eller svenska intressen.
