The #ELUVAT project launched last week!
It will focus on designing an innovative electric light utility all-terrain vehicle for defence purposes.
A legacy military vehicle, the Mercedes G, will get an upgrade by introducing an advanced electrified powertrain with #inwheel electric motors and advanced multiple wheel traction control.
It will further demonstrate the reliability of in-wheel and multiple-wheel-drive EV solutions.
If you have been following our Throwback Thursday #TBT, you could already see that our technology has been evaluated on vast vehicle types – including all-terrain vehicles (such as Steinbock, Mattro Ardrenner and others).
The vehicle will test different options of the power source for the electrified powertrain: a hybrid internal combustion engine, a battery pack and a Polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) hydrogen fuel cell.
Organisations from 5 EU countries will contribute, while #Slovenia is the lead contributing Member State, involving Univerza v Ljubljani / University of Ljubljana, AVL-AST and Elaphe.
Austria, Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands are contributors too: the Austrian AVL List as project leader, the German AVL Schrick, the Swiss GDELS-Mowag, HyMove B.V. and Saluqi Motors from The Netherlands.

#ELUVAT | New EDA research and technology project on all-terrain electrical light utility vehicle.
The ELUVAT - Innovative electric light utility all-terrain vehicle for defence purposes - project, involves the development of an all-terrain electrical light utility vehicle based on an existing legacy vehicle with a conventional driveline. This legacy vehicle will get modified by introducing an advanced electrified powertrain with in-wheel electric motors. ELUVAT involves Slovenia (lead), Austria, Germany and The Netherlands as contributing Member States and Switzerland.
In the first phase [ELUVAT I] the concept will be developed and validated through simulation, which will cover space claim, weight, and performance issues, and compare the new powertrain with the conventional powertrain. Different options as the power source for the electrified powertrain will be considered: a dedicated hybrid internal combustion engine, a battery pack and a Polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell to be operated by hydrogen. In a second phase [ELUVAT II], a full demonstrator will be developed.
The project also supports EU goals on energy efficiency and lowering the carbon footprint in the defence domain and is consistent with EU strategy on hydrogen, while also providing an opportunity for the development of dual use applications.
The kick-off meeting, held on 3 February, has officially started the first phase of the project that involves Slovenia, as lead contributing Member State, Austria, Germany and The Netherlands as contributing Member States and Switzerland, as contributing Third State, under the Administrative Arrangement between the Agency and the Swiss Confederation. ELUVAT is prepared in the CapTech Ground Systems at EDA’s Research and Innovation Directorate.
The project will be executed by a consortium composed of eight industrial and research entities: the Austrian AVL List as project leader, the German AVL Schrick, the Swiss GDELS-Mowag, HyMove and Saluqi Motors from The Netherland and AVL-AST, Elaphe Propulsion Technology and University of Ljubljana from Slovenia.
