Leonardo signs contract to supply daylight optics for Bundeswehr assault rifles

Leonardo, through its subsidiary Leonardo Germany GmbH, has signed a framework agreement with the German Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) for the supply of up to 107,929 daylight optics for use on both current and new Bundeswehr assault rifles.

Leonardo will deliver ELCAN Specter® DR 1-4x sights adapted to the requirements of the Bundeswehr. The specific adaptations refer to a modified reticle and a housing with an integrated Picatinny rail. The most important design change is the ability to operate the switching mechanism from 1x to 4x magnification on both sides of the new sight for assault rifles, while retaining the compact design and robustness of the optic.

First deliveries of the sight will take place in the third quarter of 2021.

Letter of intent concerning research and development of Finnish rifles

The Defence Forces Logistics Command and Sako Ltd have signed a letter of intent regarding research and development of a family of rifles and preparation of the procurement of a rifle system. The rifle system is intended to consist of two different system configurations including a sniper rifle for sniper use and a semi-automatic rifle for the squad’s designated marksman.

It is possible to have other countries join the development work involving the family of rifles.

The letter of intent was signed at the Defence Forces Logistics Command’s Headquarters in Tampere 25.5.2020.

Die neue Gewehrfamilie heißt K22. Sie soll das Scharfschützengewehr 85 (7.62 tarkkuuskivääri 85) und das Scharfschützengewehr Dragunov (7.62 tarkkuuskivääri Dragunov) vollständig ersetzen. Gefordert sind vielfältige Ausstattungsmöglichkeiten - u.a. die Integration von Nachtsichtausrüstung -, höhere Ergonomie, verbesserte Feuergeschwindigkeit und fortschrittlicheres Zubehör und Optiken. Die Waffe soll moderne persönliche Schutzausrüstung und leicht gepanzerte Fahrzeuge durchschlagen können. Die neuen Scharfschützengewehre sollen ab 2022 geliefert werden.

Defence Forces to procure new rifle systems and intensify cooperation with Sweden

Minister of Defence Antti Kaikkonen has authorised the Defence Forces to conclude a contract with Sako Oy on procuring a new rifle system.

The procurement contract includes precision rifles for the use of marksmen and rifles for the use of soldiers providing fire support in an infantry group. The contract also covers equipment, spare parts, maintenance tools and training by the manufacturer.

Precision rifle 23 is equipped with high-quality optical sights which, together with a high-performance precision cartridge, enable marksmen to fire at targets at a distance of up to 800 metres.

Rifle 23 has less attachments and is intended for use by soldiers in jaeger and infantry groups providing fire support. With this rifle, a group can provide precise fire at targets at a distance of up to 600 metres

The procurement decision is based on the joint development work conducted by Sako Oy and the Defence Forces in 2020-2021. The Army will receive the first set of firearms by the end of 2022 and training in the rifle system is to be started in the course of 2023.

Das tschechische Verteidigungsministerium hat am 21. Dezember einen 2022 bis 2025 laufenden Rahmenvertrag mit CB SERVIS CENTRUM s.r.o. zur Lieferung von bis zu 949 Maschinengewehren FN MINIMI in den Kalibern 7,62 x 51 mm und 5,56 x 45 mm abgeschlossen. Inkludiert sind außerdem optronische Visiere, Panzerungskits und Gehäuse. Der Auftragswert beträgt 1,12 Mrd. CZK (44,67 Mio. EUR).

Sako Ltd and Finnish Defence Forces sign a contract for the procurement of a new rifle system

The Finnish Defence Forces Logistics Command and Sako Ltd signed a contract for the procurement of the new Rifle System M23 on 12 January 2022. The procurement was preceded by collaboration on the development of the rifle system between Sako Ltd and the Finnish Defence Forces in 2020–2021 in accordance with the letter of intent between the Finnish Defence Forces and Sako Ltd.

The total value of the procurement including the value added tax is approximately EUR 10 million. The contract also includes an additional procurement option for possible subsequent procurements.

The new Rifle System M23 includes two separate rifle configurations: the Sniper Rifle 23 for sniper use and the Designated Marksman Rifle 23 for use as an infantry section support weapon by designated marksmen. In addition, the contract includes accessories, spare parts, maintenance equipment, as well as user and maintenance training provided by Sako. Sako has designed the rifles, which are based on the widely used AR10 construction. The rifles are semi-automatic and their calibre is 7.62 NATO.

“The contract announced today is the first supply contract in relation to Sako’s new product family of self-loading rifles, and the first rifles will be delivered to the Finnish Defence Forces later this year. As a whole, this new product family is a momentous business opportunity for Sako in Finland and the Nordic countries as well as globally. We are very happy that this contract also enables the implementation of joint rifle procurements between Finland and Sweden,” Kaikkola continues.

One of the guiding principles in the development of the Rifle System M23 was the ability to produce the weapons in Finland. The rifles will be manufactured in Sako’s factory in Riihimäki – thus, the project improves Finland’s security of supply and promotes retaining skills and technology as well as the ability to manufacture and repair weapon systems in Finland.
