M109 A5Oe
Self-Propelled Howitzer 155 mm. The M109 A5Oe is a M109 variant developed
in Austria and Switzerland, similar to the M109 A6 Paladin. It is equipped
with NORA - an electronic navigation and targeting system, which allows
the quick relocation to another unprepared firing position. By the Gun
Control Unit each howitzer is connected to the Austrian Electronic Artillery
Fire Control System EAFLS. The hydraulic lock and the semi-automatic
loader made by the Austrian company Intertechnik Linz make the loading
procedure more comfortable and quicker. During tests it was possible
to fire 3 rounds in 15 seconds and 10 rounds in one minute!
The prototype PT1 was presented in 1994. The first howitzers were delivered
in 1998. In total 54 vehicles were bought as A5 from United Defense
and upgraded to the A5Oe standard by the Austrian Armed Forces in Klagenfurth.
Further 26 M109A2/A3UK howitzers were upgraded to the A5Oe standard.
