The B-2 successfully released a Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile – Extended Range (JASSM-ER) during a flight test in December.
JASSM-ER is one of three new advanced capabilities being introduced to the B-2 to further modernize the platform. The B-2 fleet, capable of delivering both conventional and nuclear ordnance, is also integrating crypto modernization and a Radar Aided Targeting System (RATS). The latest system advancements are part of integrated functional capability (IFC) P6.4, which was certified last year by the Air Force. RATS will complete the latest phase of nuclear modernization of the B-2 Spirit.
The integration of RATS allows the B-2 to fully employ the B-61 mod 12 nuclear bomb. RATS is the key element of the nuclear modernization, as GPS may not be available during a bomber task force mission.

Crypto modernization further improves the communications security of various high frequency transmissions. The B-2 may now securely utilize advanced communication devices in the future threat environment. Earlier this year, Northrop Grumman conducted a successful communications flight test with modern cryptology at its Oklahoma City Weapons System Support Center site.

A B-2A Spirit stealth bomber released a B61-12 Joint Test Assembly utilizing a new capability known as Radar Aided Targeting System during a capstone test at the Tonopah Test Range, June 14, 2022.

Tested only on the B-2, RATS improves weapon guidance accuracy in a Global Positioning System-degraded environment.
A software tool designed in-house by the 72d TES was also flight tested. Known as the RATS Application Tool, it provides pilots an early indicator of the RATS’ functionality, verifying that the system is operating correctly prior to weapon release.

The Air Force will continue to modernize the B-2 to ensure it remains effective as enemy defensive systems advance. Current efforts to modernize the Defensive Management System, $1.3 billion within the FYDP, will ensure the B-2 can continue to counter sophisticated air defense networks and operate in highly contested environments.

The Air Force will continue development efforts to re-host the Stores Management Operational Flight Program software in the Flexible Strike program, enabling the B-2 to take advantage of advanced digital weapon interfaces such as those used by the B61-12 nuclear weapon. The Air Force has completed development efforts and started procuring hardware for the Common Very-Low-Frequency / Low Frequency (VLF/LF) Receiver program and will begin fielding the system in FY2019. This program provides the B-2 with a VLF/LF receiver for secure, survivable strategic communications capability. Except for delivering spares hardware, the Air Force has completed fielding the Extremely High Frequency Satellite Communications and Computer Increment 1 program: a mid-life avionics upgrade to the flight management computers and digital storage and data buses. Other on-going B-2 programs address a two-part modernization effort. The first part entails needed avionics upgrades to meet global and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)-mandated air traffic management standards, (i.e., Mode and Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast Airspace Compliance). The second piece of the modernization effort supports operational capabilities by enhancing the Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) system, Crash Survivable Memory Unit replacement, and hardware upgrades for the employment of the GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator as well as the B61-12 nuclear weapon.

A new effort beginning in Fiscal Year 2019 is the Radar Aided Targeting System software upgrade to enhance the accuracy of navigation data passed to the B61-12 nuclear weapon ($42.7 million total).

Vol−III Part 1

The B-2 is currently undergoing modernization of avionics/communications systems, engines, armament systems, low observable components, core training system components, aircraft supportability improvements, and support equipment development.

The Air Force will also study multiple structural, avionics, and engine modifications that could improve the performance of the aircraft and engines and reduce maintenance man-hours and the logistics footprint of the fleet. Focus of the studies will be on non-mission capable (maintenance) drivers, safety issues, and obsolescence issues through modernization of key components in the airframe, avionics, and engines resulting in improved aircraft availability of a high demand/low density fleet.

Modern communications are key enablers for the B-2 in the anti-access/area denial battlespace, and directly enhance lethality and force multiplication. The Common Very Low Frequency (VLF) Receiver effort (CVR) develops and integrates a receive-only, low bandwidth receiver and antenna subsystem to provide a secure, survivable strategic nuclear communication capability for the B-2.

The B-2 Advanced Extremely High Frequency (AEHF) Satellite Communications (SATCOM) system provides secure, strategic, two-way, survivable Anti-Access/Area Denial communications capability for conventional and nuclear missions. The B-2 AEHF SATCOM program is terminated in the FY 2019 Budget.

B-2 Armament upgrades integrate new and/or advanced weapons on the B-2 to attack a wider array of target sets, to include hardened, deeply buried targets, as well as destroy more targets per sortie. Upgrades includes Flex Strike and JASSM-ER integration.

The Low Observable Signature and Supportability Modifications (LOSSM) program supports the B-2 ability to penetrate anti-access combat environments, performing missions directed by the National Command Authority while ensuring aircrew survivability. The LOSSM program reduces low observable (LO) maintenance, and stabilizes and improves the combat-ready LO signature for the B-2 fleet.

The B-2 Crash Survivable Memory Unit (CSMU) provides a more capable Flight Data Recorder (FDR) with increased capacity for storing Flight Information Data (FID) for recovery and use in the event of a mishap.

The Radar Aided Targeting System (RATS) is planned to be a software only solution implemented in several B-2 system level Operational Flight Programs (OFPs) to provide radar-aided enhanced targeting capability through weapon hand-off navigational updates for guided nuclear weapons in a non-GPS environment.

The B-2 Identification, Friend or Foe (IFF) Mode 5/S and Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B) modification will fulfill the requirements of the FAA's Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) air traffic modernization mandate and the DoD mandate for secure combat identification.

The B-2 Training System upgrades include updates to training device hardware and components, simulation software, courseware and academic materials, instructional system design architectures, engineering drawings, and system documentation that is not driven by a funded aircraft
