Estonia tests competing sniper rifles ahead of tender award
The Estonian Centre for Defence Investment (ECDI) has announced a tender for procurement of sniper weapons for the Estonian Defence Forces and the Defence League, with test firings carried out on 7 March to assess the technical suitability of the weapons.

The test firing will determine accuracy and reliability of the weapon, optical sight and other accessories.

The weapons being tested are from Sako, Haenel, Unique Alpine and Desert Tech and include accessories selected by the tenderers and fitted on the weapons.

Each bidder has assembled a proposed system with freely selected accessories and equipment in compliance with the requirements of the ECDI.
The selected rifle will replace the current Sako TRG-42 in service and must be accurate over distances of up to 1,500m.

Evaluation criteria include cost of the rifle and accessories, weight and length, barrel life and the cost of spare parts.

Once test firings are complete and results have been evaluated, a contract will be awarded to the successful company in Q2 2023. The expected delivery date for the new sniper weapons is 2024.

Estonia to acquire new sniper rifles from a Finnish company
Previously, Estonian Defence Forces have used the TRG 42 8.6 mm sniper rifles from the same manufacturer. The rifles from the winning bidder are an improvement on the previous model, being more ergonomic, and more stable in shooting characteristics, and more accurate.

For example, the rifle is equipped with a suppressor, optical and thermal sights, enabling it to operate effectively in various weather conditions and lighting conditions. Additionally, the rifle has a modular design, giving the user flexibility in assembling the weapon system.
There was fierce competition in the procurement, and a total of five proposals were submitted to the final round, with Sako making the best proposal for the required capability. At the beginning of this year, firing tests were conducted in Sirgala with different bidders’ weapons, including Sako, Haenel, Unique Alpine, and Desert Tech.

The first order will be for approximately 70 rifles. The new rifles will be provided to both the 1st and 2nd Infantry Brigades of the Defence Forces and the Defence League.

The expected delivery time for the new sniper rifles is 2024.
