Initially 15 pcs. CAESAR 8x8 are acquired, which are produced by the French Company NEXTER Systems. The focus is now on the completion of the design and subsequent testing, before serial production is started. An important step in this process is thr integration of the so-called Government Furnished Equipment (GFE). GFE is a common name for Danish equipment, which the Armed Forces itself choose to integrate into the vehicle. Here you will find everything from weapon holders to monitors, radio systems and antennas.

"The implementation of Hærens Taktiske Kommunikationsnetværk (HTK) is an essential part of GFE and neccessary for the artillery systems to interact with the other units of the Army, and an essential prerequisite that CAESAR can be linked to the upcoming digital fire control system (THOR)," describes Carsten Kokborg of KALA, project manager for the artillery project.

But it's not just the interior of the cabin that needs to be adapted to the needs of the soldiers. Also on the exterior work is done with the latest adjustments of the design to meet user requirements. Among other things, a ringmount with machine gun has to be mounted on top of the cab and day and night cameras to help the driver in the dark and at reduced visibility.

The first test the artillery system is going through is a so-called blast test that tests the cab's ability to withstand, for example, a roadside bomb. This test is being carried out at NEXTER Systems in early 2019. Hereafter the so-called Factory Acceptance Test (FAT), which is also being carried out by NEXTER Systems, is awaiting, but in collaboration with the project office and the Army users.

Then the first two artillery systems arrive to Denmark, where both the undercarriage and the cannon are once again tested, this time at Oksbøl. Here, input from the soldiers will form an essential part of the assessment of whether the systems meet the requirements. But before users are ready to drive around in the new artillery systems, they must complete three weeks of concentrated education, learning to drive, operate and fire the systems.

All 15 artillery systems will be delivered at the end of 2019.

Systematic to supply Danish artillery system fire-support capability
Danish software house Systematic has been awarded a contract by the Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation (DALO) to deliver a new fire-support capability for the Danish Army’s latest artillery systems. The contract value was not released.

The new function builds on the Fire Support Module developed by Systematic for its SitaWare Headquarters command-and-control (C2) software. The company claims it will significantly shorten the sensor-to-shooter engagement cycle.
The new capability enables fire mission data – first generated by a forward observer and passed to the gun crew via a joint fires cell or similar element – to be digitally transferred into an artillery fire-control system (FCS), where the ballistic calculations are made.

Although the process will do away with a man-in-the-loop for entering the fire support data into the FCS, there will always be operator verification before the fire mission is carried out.

SitaWare consists of three interoperable and scalable segments: Sitaware Headquarters, designed for use in command posts (CP) and headquarters (HQ) at battalion level and above; SitaWare Frontline, a battle management system intended principally for use in vehicles; and SitaWare Edge for the dismounted user.

The Danish Army is adopting the complete software suite in its Army Tactical Communications Network (ATCN) programme, the first phase of which will see a digitised battlegroup by 2019. For fire support the forward observers and gun crews will be equipped with SitaWare Frontline, while the fires co-ordination component will use SitaWare Headquarters.

Denmark introduces CAESAR 155 mm, Piranha 120 mm indirect fire systems

Bild
Details of these new systems were provided at a recent Omega Future Indirect Fires and Mortar Systems conference held in Bristol, UK, by Major Michael Johnsson of the Danish Army.

The Danish Army’s remaining M109A3 155 mm/39 calibre tracked SP artillery systems are to be replaced by 15 of the latest CAESAR systems, which are based on a Tatra 8×8 chassis for which Denmark is the launch customer.

CAESAR is deployed by France, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, and Thailand, but all use a 6×6 platform (with 18 155 mm projectiles and associated charges carried). The Tatra 8×8 has improved cross-country mobility, a fully protected four-person forward control cab, carries a total of 36 projectiles and charges, and is fitted with a semi-automatic ammunition handling system.

Nexter Systems is also marketing a fully automated ammunition handling system for CAESAR, in which case ammunition capacity is reduced to 30 projectiles and associated charges.

The 155 mm/52 calibre ordnance is fitted with a muzzle brake and meets the NATO Joint Ballistic Memorandum of Understanding (JBMoU). It can use older bag-type charges or a Modular Charge Systems (MCS) with six modules used to give a range of about 40 km, depending on the type of projectile. In addition to the deployed high-explosive (HE), smoke, and illuminating projectiles, it is expected that a precision munition will be acquired, such as the 155 m Excalibur.

The four-door protected cab is provided with an air conditioning and NBC system, as well as a roof mounted .50 M2 HB machine gun and banks of electrically operated grenade launchers.

A first order was placed for 15 CAESAR with an option for another six, but it is expected that only four of those six will be ordered, which will enable Denmark to have three batteries each of six weapons plus an additional one for training.

The CAESAR is fitted with a computerised fire control system (FCS), muzzle velocity radar, and a land-navigation system so it can rapidly come into Action, carry out a fire mission, and then move to avoid counter battery fire.
