UK: Mobile Fires Platform

Beitrag von theoderich »

Mobile Fires Platform – propelling the Army’s field artillery system into the 21st century, in: desider, H 129 (April 2019)
Work is underway to deliver a new state-of-the-art self-propelled gun for the Army. The Mobile Fires Platform (MFP) is expected to deliver a new fleet of 155mm self-propelled guns which will be used to support both the armoured infantry and future Strike Brigades. It will replace the AS90 gun, which has been in service since the early 1990s.

MFP is the lead project within Army Headquarters' Close Support Fires Programme. This programme will also deliver additional state-of-the-art equipment to complement MFP. This includes a new charge system and a suite of new ammunition which will enable MFP to deliver a much wider range of effects at a much greater range than the current AS90 capability.

The project is being managed by the Artillery Systems team in the Land Equipment Operating Centre and is expected to deliver a fleet of new guns, as well as a training system and support package, by the mid-2020s.
The project team released its first request for information to industry on March 5, 2019.

Defence Minister Stuart Andrew at DVD18, Millbrook
In addition, we’re introducing several new projects

We’re creating a Next Generation Weapon Locating System (NGWLS) that will sustain our capability to detect, acquire, track and assess current and future Land Environment indirect fire threats.

And we’re bringing in new Mobile Fires Platform (MFP) that provide our army with a 155 millimetre artillery capability…embracing 21st century technology…capable of supporting both Divisional deep fight and Strike

Upgraded digital sensor-to-shooter system allows allied nations to share tactical information
The Fire Control Battlefield Information System Application (FC BISA) is a Command, Control, Communications, Computation and Intelligence system (C4I) that generates firing data for artillery and mortars. It operates on the Bowman ComBAT Infrastructure and Platform (BCIP) system and is supported by CGI IT and Business Consulting UK ltd.

The team is working with the Artillery Systems Co-Operation Activities (ASCA) network – a community of allied forces – to
build new software into FC BISA that will allow the British Army to share information with other forces and allow them to identify and fire at hostile targets between them.

It will be used across the Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS), the AS90 self-propelled gun, the light gun and mortars,
which are weapon systems used by the infantry for close-support firing.
The Royal Artillery Trials & Development Unit (RATDU) is the lead user in the development of FC BISA v4 and the ASCA programme. Since re-joining the programme and becoming full members in 2018, the UK fielded an ASCA terminal for the field Army in December 2019 and are now in the process of developing the next version.
FC BISA was first brought into service with the Royal Artillery in 2008 and was designed to be a fully networked and interoperable digital fires capability. This latest iteration of the system – version 4 – is being introduced in line with capability updates to the software which is used across the BOWMAN BCIP 5.6 system. The first tranche of updates have already been introduced to limited systems and the second and third tranches are expected to be introduced in Spring 2021 and Summer 2022 across the entire BICIP 5.6 network.

DSEI 2019
Mobile Fires Platform: clarification [DSEI19D4] (13. September 2019)
The Royal Artillery has a future requirement for a Mobile Fires Platform (MFP) to replace the currently deployed tracked 155mm/39 calibre AS90 self-propelled artillery system. It will be issued to four Close Support Regiments, with a total of 135 units required. The MFP includes a training solution for the operators, including the driver, and a support solution.

The ammunition, charges limber and fire control system are separate projects within the Close Support Fires Programme. This programme is still in its early stages and could be a tracked or wheeled solution, with Initial Gate 2021, Main Gate 2024 and initial operational capability around 2026.

Elbit Systems’ UK Subsidiary Awarded $137 Million Contract to Supply the Future Target Acquisition Solution for Soldiers of the British Armed Forces
Haifa, Israel, January 21, 2021 – Elbit Systems Ltd. (NASDAQ: ESLT, TASE: ESLT) (“Elbit Systems” or “the Company”) announced today that its UK subsidiary, Elbit Systems UK Ltd. (“Elbit Systems UK”), was awarded an approximately $137 million (approximately £100 million) contract by the UK Ministry of Defence to provide the British Armed Forces with the future target acquisition solution for Joint Terminal Attack Controllers and Fire Support Teams under the Dismounted Joint Fires Integrators (“D-JFI”) program. The contract will be performed over a five-year period.

The D-JFI solution to be provided by Elbit Systems UK, is a networked, passive and active target acquisition solution that acquires, generates and communicates target information to effector systems for effective engagement of joint precision and non-precision fires. The solution is empowered by Artificial Intelligence and will interface with the radio communication systems of the British Army, Royal Air Force and Royal Marines.
It integrates several of its technologies, including: the TORCH-X Battle Management Application; the Hattorix system for undetectable generation of high-precision targets, the CORAL Multi-Spectral electro-optical payload for enhanced target acquisition in day and night and the Rattler XR long range laser designator.

Written evidence submitted by KMW and Nexter Defense Systems (KNDS)

Modernising the UK’s land systems and strengthening joint European security

KMW and Nexter Defense Systems (KNDS) Position paper, August 2020

18 September 2020
14. As UK moves towards the need for new ammunition families already required by the future programmes such as Mobile Fires Platform (MFP) KNDS will seek the opportunity to extend its existing cooperation with BAE Systems (40mm CTA and 155mm BONUS). Ammunition has notoriously heavy capital and developmental investment requirements. An international cooperative approach while maintaining sovereign supply has already proven successful.

Upgrades to Multiple Launch Rocket Systems Strengthen Deep Fires Capability
Upgrades will be made to 44 launchers, which are currently in-service, and will include a new armoured cab and upgraded automotive and launch mechanism components.
Taking advantage of the long-standing MLRS collaboration with the US and key allies, work will start on upgrading the first tranche of launchers in March 2022 with the fleet going through production over a four-year period. The upgrades will keep the equipment in service until 2050.

The work will be carried out under an existing production contract with Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control with the work being carried out at Red River Army Depot and Lockheed Martin's facility in Camden, Arkansas.

The UK is also developing UK-specific systems for the new launchers, including Composite Rubber Tracks (CRT), and a vehicle camera and radar system. A new Fire Control System will be developed collaboratively with the US, UK, Italy, and Finland.

The CRT will provide better fuel economy and allow the launcher to travel further, giving greater operational and tactical mobility to support deployed troops in a range of operating environments. A single launcher will be used to fire many payloads.

To ensure soldiers are not outranged, the Army will develop a new extended range missile with MLRS partners, to be fired from the updated launchers, which should be in-service by 2025. The Guided MLRS Extended Range (GMLRS-ER) missile will extend the Army’s reach from 84 to 150km.

The 44 updated launchers will also be able to fire the US’s Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) which has a range of 499km and is expected in-service from 2024. These weapons will place the British Army at the cutting edge of global deep fires capability, ready to respond to long range air defence and missile threats presented by hostile actors.

"Most proven"?
