Saab has received an order from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) to develop and maintain the Armed Forces’ artillery and weapon locating capability. The order includes Saab’s Giraffe 4A multi-function radar and life extension of the artillery locating system Arthur.

Deliveries of the modern ground-based multi-function system Giraffe 4A and the life extension of Arthur will create conditions for the Armed Forces’ long-range surveillance capability in the long term and give the defence new possibilities to handle existing and future threats. The work will take place at Saab in Gothenburg with deliveries from 2019.

På exempelvis materielsidan kommer utbyte ske när det kommer till Artilleriregementets nya multifunktionsradar G 4.

The order includes a number of Saab’s multifunctional radar Giraffe 4A and upgrades of the Swedish Armed Forces’ existing Giraffe AMB surface radars. Saab will also update existing and deliver additional command and control systems, as well as provide extensive integration of the air defence battalions’ fire units.

Saab will carry out the work in Gothenburg, Järfälla, Arboga and Halmstad in Sweden.

Saab has received an order from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) for the Giraffe 1X radar for one of Sweden’s Ground Based Air Defence (GBAD) solutions. The contract period is 2024-2027 and the order value is approximately SEK 700 million.

The order includes Saab’s Giraffe 1X radar, associated command and control systems and integration to a Swedish GBAD solution. The radar will be installed on a Sisu GTP armoured vehicle.

The Contract is expected to be signed during the period May to October 2025.

1.6 Description of the requested products and services

FMV intends to procure and sign a Supply Contract with one (1) supplier for delivery of Weapon Locating Systems (WLS) for the Swedish Armed Forces (SwAF).

The WLS shall be able to detect and locate the source of artillery, mortar and rocket fire in military operations. The WLS is foreseen to utilize radar to detect and track incoming projectiles by analyzing their trajectories, speed, and point of origin including point of impact.

The primary goal of the WLS is to provide timely and accurate information about hostile fire, enabling military forces to take necessary defensive actions, protect personnel and assets, and effectively respond to indirect fire threats. By quickly identifying the source of incoming fire, the WLS enhances situational awareness, aiding in the protection of troops and minimizing the impact of enemy attacks.

The WLS shall have the ability to integrated with command-and-control systems for a swift distribution of threat information to relevant units for rapid response and counter fire to engage hostile targets with precision.

The WLS shall have the capability to:

• Within the brigade area of operations and over long distances, i.e. more than 100 km, provide effectors with targeting data to protect friendly forces and neutralizing threats by counter fire, indirect fire or by other means.

• Detect, classify and localize rockets, artillery and mortars as well as UAS/UAVs, which includes point of origin and point of impact.

• Utilize various sensor technologies such as radar, acoustics, or infrared sensors to detect and track incoming projectiles by analyzing their trajectories, speed, and point of origin.

• Gather and digitally share target acquisition data as intelligence to external recipients (e.g. division command, division intelligence units, airforce command, navy command etc) via existing SwAF C4I systems.

• Sense and warn friendly forces of threats originating from indirect fire. As such, it must be integrated into the C4I systems of the land forces.

• Be integrated with Bv 410, on one (1) vehicle platform. Note that the Bv 410 has a limited carrying capacity and measurements of what it can accommodate.

The WLS shall have a maturity level of TRL 8 (Technology Readiness Level 8), which means that the actual system/process is completed and qualified through test and demonstration (pre-commercial demonstration).

The procurement aims to sign a Supply Contract that includes:

1. Service, support and operational support.
2. Options regarding purchase of additional systems.

These parts of the agreement shall be valid for seven (7) years with the possibility of extension on up to three occasions for a total of up to six (6) years, i.e. a maximum of thirteen (13) years.

The Contracting Authority shall have the right without obligation to extend the agreement.

FMV har tecknat ett första avtal för medelräckviddig radar, MRR. Det rör sig om systemet GM200 MM/C från nederländska Thales. Medelräckviddig radar ingår som en del av det nya sensorsystemet för luft- och ytövervakning, som byggs upp inom programmet Sensorsystem Ny.

MRR är tänkt att ersätta Försvarsmaktens befintliga system, PS-871, som närmar sig slutet av sin livslängd.

Bakgrunden till anskaffningen av systemet från Thales är det Letter of Intent som sedan tidigare finns mellan Sverige och Nederländerna.

Det totala värdet på avtalet är cirka en miljard kronor. Leverans av det första systemet till FMV är planerad till 2026 och därefter blir det löpande leveranser till Försvarsmakten.
