Unmanned Aerial Vehicles for the Polish Armed Forces
Within the ‘Orlik” programme, PGZ consortium offered The Polish Armed Forces PGZ-19R system entirely designed and manufactured in Poland. The system is used for visual reconnaissance on a wide area in various terrain and weather conditions, day and night. The proposed UAV system, in compliance with the Purchaser’s requirements, consists of 11 elements creating the following set:
  • Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) – 5 items,
  • Mobile Take-off Launcher,
  • Logistic car,
  • Ground Control Station,
  • Ground Terminal Data,
  • Portable Video Terminal,
  • Remote Video Terminal.
Apart from the UAV sets, elements supporting the operation and usage of the sets are to be provided within the order:
  • Integrated Training System,
  • Integrated Logistics System,
  • Logistics and training initiating packages.
The order accounts for 12 UAV sets:
  • basic (8 sets), in years 2021-2023,
  • option (4 sets), in years 2023-2026.
The main elements of the system offered by PGZ include: unmanned aerial vehicles with
a combustion or hybrid drive and the ground control station. The element integrating both of these components is the communication and data transmission system based on the ground terminal data. Ground control station enables the operator to remotely control the UAV and manage the payload (e.g. control of camera and sensors). PGZ-19R system was designed to be entirely independent of the ground infrastructure (airports).

The system is characterized by considerable mobility. The ground control station and logistic car were built on the basis of 15 feet containers located on high mobility cars. The ground data terminal and pneumatic launcher, however, are built on trailers pulled by these cars. The mobile configuration of the set allows for the land, sea and air transport.

The maximum take-off weight of UAV amounts to 90 kg, while the weighing capacity – 20 kg. The payload consists of the optoelectronic head comprising of day-time camera, infrared camera, laser rengefinder and laser target indicator. Moreover, PGZ-19R is equipped with SAR slotted radar of a very high frequency. The unmanned vehicle can operate in the air up to 12 hours at the altitude up to 5000 metres. The landing proceeds in a classical manner or with a parachute.

PGZ S.A. to lead the Consortium conducting the programme of acquiring short-range tactical-class Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Systems, code name “Orlik” (26. Mai 2017)
On 26 May 2017, during the 11th International AIR FAIR Expo in Bydgoszcz, Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa S.A., Wojskowe Zakłady Lotnicze Nr 2 S.A. in Bydgoszcz, and PIT-Radwar S.A. signed, in the presence of the Secretary of State at the Ministry of National Defence Mr Bartosz Kownacki, an agreement establishing a Consortium to participate in the proceeding organised by the Arms Inspectorate of the Ministry of National Defence concerning the order for short-range tactical-class Unmanned Aerial Vehicle System, code name “Orlik”, for the Polish Armed Forces. PGZ S.A. is to lead this Consortium.
As the Consortium’s leader, Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa S.A. will be responsible for preparing the offer for the short-range tactical-class Unmanned Aerial Vehicle System pursuant to the requirements defined by the Ministry of National Defence. On the other hand, as the Consortium’s Executive Leader, Wojskowe Zakłady Lotnicze Nr 2 S.A. in Bydgoszcz will be the entity responsible for integrating the individual elements of the system, including but not limited to the airborne platform, the Ground Control Station (GCS), and other components of the system.
Under the programme of acquiring short-range tactical-class Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Systems, code name “Orlik”, the Consortium headed by Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa S.A. will offer to the Arms Inspectorate the E-310 UAV System. It is the first system of this type that has been completely designed and manufactured in Poland. The E-310 UAV is designed for comprehensive reconnaissance tasks in various terrain and weather conditions. E-310 enables collecting and real-time forwarding of high-quality reconnaissance data to the indicated recipients.

The primary elements of the E-310 UAV System include the airborne platform with hybrid propulsion (electric and combustion engines) and the Ground Control Station (GCS). The element that integrates these two components is the communication and data transmission system that enables the operator both to remotely control the UAV and to manage its payload. The E-310 unmanned aircraft may carry out flights at the ceiling of 5 000 m at velocities exceeding 200 km/h. Its payload consists of an optoelectronic head equipped with daytime and night-time cameras, a laser rangefinder and a laser target pointer, a SAR radar with GMTI designed for recording and transmitting ground situation images in adverse weather conditions and for tracking moving targets, as well as the (optional) ELINT system that enables locating devices that generate electromagnetic energy. The E-310 UAV has the operating range of 200 km from the GCS, which means that with up to 15 h of flight time and distribution of several Ground Control Stations across the country’s territory the system offered by the Consortium headed by Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa S.A. enables constant monitoring of the whole territory of Poland.

Poland Confirms Procurement of Armed Bayraktar TB2 UAVs from Turkey
We have negotiated an agreement that would cover procurement of 4 UCAV packages - 24 aircraft armed with anti-tank guided missiles, stated head of the Polish Ministry of Defence Mariusz Błaszczak, referring to the acquisition of the Bayraktar TB2 drones in his interview for Polskie Radio 24.
The Head of the MoD added that Poland expects the first UCAV set of 6 aircraft to be delivered next year. He noted that the agreement also covers the logistics and training package, as well as a maintenance offset agreement, with the offset delegated to a “military enterprise”. Błaszczak stated that no Polish company makes UAVs in the class of TB2. Should a similar product be offered by the Polish military industry, the MoD would consider procurement as such.

Bayraktar TB2 is a tactical medium-range armed UCAV that meets the assumptions of the Polish Gryf UAV procurement programme. The project envisages the acquisition of up to 15 sets of aircraft. It is thus possible Turkish drones would be used mainly to achieve the initial capability.

Poland Procures FlyEye UAVs for Artillery Units and Major Quantity of Loitering Munitions
Mariusz Błaszczak approved a contract yesterday, concerning the Wizjer programme UAVs. The procured platform has been designed by the Air Force Institute of Technology [ITWL], while manufacturing would be handled jointly by a consortium, led by the PGZ Group, and involving WZL No. 1, and WZL no. 2 facilities. Deliveries of 25 packages and 100 UAVs would be taking place between 2024 and 2027. The above refers to mini-UAVs for battalion level applications in the Land Forces, and the SOF component. The agreement value is defined as PLN 174 million.
The head of the Polish Ministry of Defence also announced a plan to procure loitering munitions, to gradually increase the saturation of the battlefield involving these assets. The above would be one of the first tasks for the newly-established Armament Agency. Currently, the Polish Armed Forces have only a minor quantity of light Warmate loitering munitions at their disposal - in the inventory of the Territorial Defence component.

Talking to us, Krzysztof Płatek, spokesman for the Armament Inspectorate, told us that soon, a procurement procedure concerning a loitering munitions system would begin, under the name GLADIUS. The programme in question is relatively obscure. The only publicly available information can be found in response to a parliamentary question asked by MP Stanisław Tyszka, issued by the Deputy Minister of Defence Wojciech Skurkiewicz, in May 2020: _"To increase the reconnaissance and long-distance strike capabilities the Polish Armed Forces have, beyond the range of the FlyEye short-range UAV, it is planned that unmanned search and strike systems would be procured for the artillery elements of the Army, named GLADIUS".

Poland to Procure Reaper MALE UAVs
I would like to inform you that acquisition of MALE UAVs is pursued both within the framework of the ZEFIR programme that would meet the prospective needs for the development of the capabilities of the Armed Forces, as well as within the framework of urgent acquisition of the MQ-9 REAPER UAVs - in relation to the situation on the eastern border of the Republic of Poland, Lt. Col. Krzysztof Płatek told us, responding to our inquiry.
In the case of the Zefir programme, it was originally planned to procure 4 sets of 3 UAVs each. We do not know how many airframes would be acquired through the current urgent procurement. In late January the spokesman for the Armament Agency said that it is planned to finalize negotiation this year, regarding the FMS procurement of the M1A2 Abrams SEPv3 MBTs, and the first operational-level MALE UAVs.

Poland signs biggest UAS deal in its history
The Polish Armaments Agency has signed a PLN2 billion (USD450 million) contract on the strike-reconnaissance unmanned aircraft system (UAS), dubbed Gladius.

The deal was signed on 6 May by the Armaments Agency Chief Col Artur Kuptel and WB Group's president Piotr Wojciechowski.
WB Group is to deliver four strike-reconnaissance UAS battery modules with training, service, and logistics packages, including a simulator centre and trainers. Janes understands hundreds of Gladius systems are to be ordered.

The system contains reconnaissance and strike platforms, mobile launchers, and command, supply, and service vehicles. Deliveries of the first Gladius components are expected by the end of 2022.

July 27, 2007 - Polish Army Selects Aeronautics as Supplier of Mini UAV Systems
Aeronautics Defense Systems Ltd. signs $3 m contract to supply six Orbiter mini UAV systems to the Polish Army.

Following an initial sale, in early 2006, of Orbiter mini UAV systems to the Polish Special Forces, the customer's high satisfaction with the Orbiter's operational performance in Afghanistan over the past year has led to a sharp increase in Aeronautics' activities in Poland (now a member of NATO), and to the decision by the Polish Ministry of Defense to equip its other land forces with a large number of similar systems.

The Orbiter mini UAV system has emerged as the winner of a world-wide tender conducted by the Polish Ministry of Defense, in which eleven other companies, including several from Israel, participated. Out of the six companies that made it to the final stage of the tender, Aeronautics has been selected as the sole supplier of mini UAV systems.
The contract which has just been signed is worth about $3 million and includes the supply of six Orbiter systems, each of which includes three mini air vehicles, day and night camera payloads, portable Ground Control Stations and data links for command and video transmission.

March 1, 2010 - Aeronautics to supply tactical unmanned aerial vehicles to Polish forces in Afghanistan
Aeronautics Ltd., based in Yavne, announced today (Monday) that it will supply Aerostar UAV (unmanned aerial vehicles) systems to Polish Military Forces operating in Afghanistan. The supply contract, which exceeds $30 million, was signed last Thursday in Poland.

Aeronautics, Israel’s leading UAV manufacturer, competed against Israel’s other two chief UAV developers – Elbit Systems and Israel Aerospace Industries. The selection process lasted about 18 months, although some acceleration occurred during the last few months on account of increased Polish military operations in Afghanistan.

As part of the deal, Aeronautics will provide the Polish military with 2 Aerostar systems, which include a total of 8 UAVs, as well as Ground Control Stations (GCS), a simulator system, support in establishing an operational UAV squadron in Afghanistan and support for training to be conducted in Poland.
