Baltic defence ministers issue a joint statement on sending weapons to Ukraine (21. Januar 2022)
Estonian Minister of Defence Kalle Laanet, Latvian Minister of Defence Artis Pabriks and Lithuanian Minister of Defence Arvydas Anušauskas today issued a press statement in support of Ukraine, noting that they have received the necessary approvals from the United States to send weapons and continue to work closely to deliver them to Ukraine expeditiously.
According to the statement Estonia will provide Javelin anti-armour missiles, while Latvia and Lithuania will provide Stinger anti-aircraft missiles and adjacent equipment to bolster Ukraine’s defensive military capabilities. The Baltic countries will continue to co-operate to deliver weapons to Ukraine expeditiously. Defence ministers also expressed hope that there will never be a need for Ukraine to actually use these weapon systems and that Russia will change its aggressive posture.

EU unterstützt Ukraine bei Militärausbildung

European security situation: notions of ‘spheres of influence’ have no place in the 21st century

https://www.consilium.europa.eu/de/pres ... t-century/
  • Council conclusions on the European security situation, 24 January 2022
Recalling the European Council Conclusions from December 2021, the Council reiterates that any further military aggression by Russia against Ukraine will have massive consequences and severe costs. This includes a wide array of sectoral and individual restrictive measures that would be adopted in coordination with partners. The EU has accelerated the preparatory work in this direction by the High Representative and the Commission.
The Council reaffirms the EU’s commitment to further support Ukraine’s resilience, including in countering cyber and hybrid threats and tackling disinformation. The EU is defining modalities of support to Ukraine also in the area of professional military education. The Council underlines the importance of Ukraine’s reform agenda, based on our shared values as reiterated in the 23rd EU-Ukraine Summit Joint statement, as a vehicle for enhancing Ukraine’s external and internal resilience, and reaffirms the EU’s long-standing and steadfast support to this end.

The Government endorsed ammunition donation for Ukraine
On Wednesday January 26, 2022, the Government of the Czech Republic endorsed the proposal by the Defence Minister Jana Černochová to grant an exception from the condition of the status of permanent excessiveness of military materiel and realise its free transfer to Ukraine, specifically concerning calibre 152 mm artillery ammunition.
The donation comprises roughly 4,000 pcs of calibre 152 mm artillery ammunition valued at approximately EUR 1.5 million, and will be realised by the virtue of a donation agreement included in the endorsed motion. The aim of the donation is to strengthen national defence capability of Ukraine, as it requested assistance in response to the situation which involves a concentration of major military potential by the Russian Federation on Ukrainian borders.

The Czech Armed Forces holds a sufficient stock of calibre 152 ammunition, which is not compatible with the newly acquired NATO calibre 155 mm artillery guns. Therefore, it is not a materiel that would be intended for use by the Czech Armed Forces in the years ahead.

The Government granted the exception from the status of permanent excessiveness in compliance with the Act on the Czech Republic’s property, which stipulates that free transfers of title to property must be done in public interest. That condition has been met, as strengthening the defence posture of Ukraine is in the interest of the Czech Republic, because it will help mitigate the risk of occurrence of an armed conflict in the East of Europe.

Ukraine-Russia tensions: British troops 'unlikely' to fight - Truss
There is a "real threat" of Russia invading Ukraine, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss has warned, but it is "very unlikely" British soldiers would be deployed to fight in any conflict.

Instead, she said the UK was sending weapons to Ukraine and "strengthening" its sanction system so oligarchs close to the Kremlin had "nowhere to hide".

She said the UK was also offering extra support to nearby Nato allies.

Any invasion would be "terrible for Europe", Ms Truss told the BBC.

Ukraine: PM weighs up bigger troop offer amid Russia border crisis
The UK is considering offering to double its number of troops deployed in Eastern Europe, as ministers weigh up options to increase pressure on Russia amid heightened tensions over Ukraine.
In addition to bolstering troop numbers, No 10 said this could involve sending defensive weapons to Estonia. Fast jets, warships and military specialists could also be sent to protect the UK's Nato allies.

PM considers major military offer to NATO
The UK is expected to bolster its offer to NATO with a major military deployment to strengthen Europe’s borders in the face of rising Russian aggression. UK officials will be deployed to Brussels to finalise the details of the offer with NATO next week, and ministers will discuss the military options on Monday.

It comes after the Prime Minister asked defence and security chiefs to step up defensive efforts in Europe during a high level intelligence briefing on the situation in Ukraine this week.
“I have ordered our Armed Forces to prepare to deploy across Europe next week, ensuring we are able to support our NATO allies on land, at sea and in the air.”

The possible deployment will reinforce NATO’s defences and underpin the UK’s support for Nordic and Baltic partners.

In conversations with partners in recent weeks, the Prime Minister has emphasised that without a successful combination of deterrence and diplomacy, thousands of lives will be lost in both Russia and Ukraine.

The Prime Minister is expected to speak to President Putin and travel to the region early this week to relay that message in person. A second trip to meet NATO member counterparts is being planned for early next month.
The Defence Secretary is also expected to travel to meet with Allies this week in Hungary, Slovenia, and Croatia on behalf of the Prime Minister.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister has also asked the Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, to attend Cabinet this Tuesday to brief Ministers on the situation in Ukraine. The UK already has more than 900 British military personnel based in Estonia, more than 100 in Ukraine as part of Operation Orbital, and a Light Cavalry Squadron of around 150 people, is deployed to Poland.

Op Orbital has trained 22,000 Ukrainian troops since 2015, and further military trainers were sent to the country earlier this month to support the training of Ukrainian forces to use 2000 missiles sent from the UK.
