IDEX 2021: Schiebel works on larger, heavier Camcopter
‘We are designing, building, and beginning to test the S-300, which will probably come into service in the next few years,’ said Neil Hunter, global head of business development at the Austrian company.
Speaking to Shephard during the IDEX 2021 defence exhibition in Abu Dhabi on 21-25 February, he added: ‘It is important now that we just focus on the engineering milestones rather than trying to say when it is ready for the market. We would rather get the engineering right, and when that happens, we will talk about bringing it onto the market.’
S-300 ‘will be basically three times bigger’ than the S-100 with an MTOW of 600-700kg, Hunter said. The new rotary-wing UAV will be able to carry a payload of 250kg. ‘And playing with the amount of the fuel will either give a longer endurance and smaller payload or vice versa,’ he added.
Schiebel intends to offer the Camcopter S-300 as a competitor to the Airbus VSR700, which has an MTOW of 700kg and can carry a 150kg payload.
French defence procurement agency DGA awarded Airbus Helicopters a contract to carry out de-risking studies, which will allow the VSR700 to undergo trial flights from naval vessels; this is expected to occur in 2021.
The United Arab Emirates Army was the launch customer of the S-100 in 2004 but Schiebel also has its eye on capturing more business from France, having sold a number of Camcopters to the French Navy for installation aboard Mistral-class amphibious assault ships.
Hunter said that expansion is possible, arguing: ‘If you look ahead, you’ll see there is a lot of interest [in the S-100] from the La Fayette frigates’.
Whereas most UAVs tend to fly on experimental or otherwise limited permits, Schiebel is seeking certification for the S-100 in France. ‘They [the French] are one of the first to start the certification of the product,’ Hunter noted.
He added that Schiebel was the first company to receive a Light UAS Certification (LUC) from the EU Aviation Safety Agency.
‘This again shows our level of maturity and safety and getting recognised by Europe was an important step,’ Hunter concluded.
