Hungary to join forces with Czechia and Poland to safeguard Slovak airspace
Today Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď made his working trip abroad to Hungary's Budapest to meet Hungarian Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky for talks centred on current security and defence policy issues, the developments in Ukraine, and the forthcoming opportunities for cooperation in the Visegrad Group, including on Slovak airspace protection

Following the meeting, Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď announced: “Today, we can confirm the Hungarian sideʼs interest and the Slovak sideʼs interest and gratitude to Hungary that it will get involved in protecting Slovak airspace. After Poland and Czechiaʼs involvement in this initiative and Hungaryʼs declaration of interest in joining this cooperation, the Hungarian Air Force will, after the signing of relevant documents, protect Slovak skies. So, a real Visegrad project is now emerging, which testifies to the significance of the V4 as a vital platform for advancing cooperation of our countries. From the political and military perspective, this is a positive step with added value for all those involved.”

He gave more clarity to the intent whereby a joint political declaration on the protection of Slovak airspace is due to be signed at the V4 Defence Ministerial in June 2023. By then, SVK MOD experts will have finalised the wording of the technical arrangements regarding the general and practical aspects of this collaboration

National Cabinet unanimously and in conformity with the Constitution votes to send the MiG-29 aircraft to Ukraine
Slovak Government adopted a decision to provide Ukraine with the already grounded MiG-29 fighter jets that Slovakia no longer uses. In line with the UN Charter and in view of the close and friendly relations with Ukraine, the Slovak Government, in full conformity with the Constitution, consensually decided in favour of donating said aircraft, hence saving lives of people.

Within the framework of inter-governmental non-military agreement between Slovakia and Ukraine, the 13 of our MiG-29 fighter jets will be sent to Ukraine. In addition, the aid package will consist of 2 launchers of the KUB Anti-Aircraft Missile System, a control system and pertinent spare parts and missiles.

It is assumed that the said equipment might be ultimately delivered in a horizon of several upcoming weeks.
Present at the meeting of the Cabinet was also the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Slovak Republic Gen. Daniel Zmeko, who repeatedly confirmed that the configuration of the MiG-29 fighter jets, which is currently in the inventory of the Slovak Armed Forces, would no longer be used in the Slovak Armed Forces. He accentuated that the Slovak MiG-29 fighter jets were last modernized in 1996 and that said aircraft suffer a high failure rate, which is documented by the fact that they reported failure in average every 43 minutes at the time when they were last in an operational condition.

„In the final stage of operating the MiG-29 aircraft we had to cope with problems due to a lack of pilots. Over the last years, when we experienced technical problems concerning the MiG-29 aircraft life cycle, even those pilots that we still had, lost most of their pilot handling skills and capabilities. The fundamental problem was the operation rate of said aircraft – by virtue of The On-Demand Maintenance Agreement, the operation rate oscillated at some four operational MiG-29 aircraft in one operational day, which was insufficient even in terms of ensuring the standby capabilities with respect to the airspace protection and rendered training of new pilots impossible. Another critical problem was the availability of spare parts, components and ammunition. Handing over the MiG-29 aircraft will have no adverse impact on defence capability of the Slovak Republic since we do not use them anymore and we will not use them in the future,“ said Gen. Zmeko.

Leonardo ups the ante on M345 trainer jet pitch to Slovakia
Leonardo has cemented partnerships with Slovak defence companies LOTN, VRM and Slavia Production Systems in an effort to bolster a proposal to supply its M345 jet trainer to Slovakia as the country's air force transitions to an F-16 fighter fleet.

In a ceremony last week, Leonardo signed strategic agreements with Slovak defence companies LOTN, Virtual Reality Media (VRM) and Slavia Production Systems, consolidating efforts to create a base for wide industrial cooperation with the Slovakian armed forces and industry.

LOTN is an aviation MRO provider, with experience on such types as the UH-60 Black Hawk and F-16 fighter; VRM develops training and simulation systems; while Slavia Production Systems specialises in industrial processes and management.
Putting the agreements in context, Leonardo displayed its M345 Tactical Trainer simulator, at the SIAF air show in the last week of August.

First F-16 Block 70 fighter jet for Slovakia is built, others are in the process of production at Lockheed Martin's Greenville site

On Wednesday 6 September 2023, Defence Minister Martin Sklenár visited Lockheed Martin's Greenville site in South Carolina, the home of the F-16 Fighting Falcon production line, where the first F-16 Block 70 aircraft carrying the Slovak national emblem and the emblem of the Slovak Air Force was officially unveiled and presented to the SVK MOD delegation. The aircraft still awaits its full finalisation and flight tests are scheduled for this November. The head of the SVK MOD was also briefed on the progress made in producing the other 13 F-16 jets.
According to Director General of the MOD Modernisation Department and National Armaments Director Michal Homza, preparations involving expert teams at individual levels are on track to make sure the first two aircraft are available for training SVK F-16 technicians in the USA.
Alongside the Slovak Air Force's new F-16 Fighter Jet Capability, our strategic partnership also offers other unique opportunities for industry involvement, including establishing cooperation between Slovakia's state-owned Aircraft Repair Company Trenčín (LOTN) and Lockheed Martin as F-16 manufacturer – the subject of which is LOTN's future participation in the maintenance of some aircraft components. In addition, LOTN will be responsible for introducing the Integrated Logistics Information and Automation System (ILIAS) to support the implementation and sustainment of Slovakia's F-16 Block 70 fleet.
