Un Caracal équipé d'un canon de 20 mm a décollé de la BA 120 de Cazaux avec 480 obus de 20 mm à son bord. Le but de la mission était d'effectuer des tirs d'expérimentation.
Ainsi armé, le Caracal s’inscrit comme le successeur du Puma « Pirate », déjà doté de cette capacité d'équipement.
- Erprobung eines Caracal mit einer 20 mm-Kanone (SH20) und 480 Schuss Munition von der Base Aérienne 120 in Cazaux aus (Durchführung von Testschüssen).
- Ziel: Einführung des Caracal mit dieser Bewaffnung als Nachfolger des Puma "Pirate".
- Schon vor dieser Schießkampagne wurden vom Centre d’expertise aérienne militaire insgesamt elf Flüge von insgesamt 20 Stunden durchgeführt, bei denen 3.200 Schuss Munition verfeuert wurden. Die Bodentests erforderten vier Montagen und Demontagen des Systems SH20.
- Der Generalstab der Armée de l'Air hat schon jetzt die Genehmigung zum Einsatz des Systems SH20 erteilt.
SH20 Retractable door mounting for helicopters
MISSION
The SH 20 door mounting is designed to provide multi-mission and multi-role helicopters with air-to-ground fire-support capability. The use of this mounting is particularly suitable for missions such as surveillance or stealth target approach (armament not visible with door closed) and C-SAR. The retractability of the mounting allows access to the cabin to be completely cleared during loading/unloading operations. The SH 20 uses the 20 M 621 cannon with its reputation for simplicity (operation and maintenance) and fires the wide spread NATO-standard 20mm x 102 ammunition. The SH 20 can be fitted to new or retrofitted helicopters. Its light weight and low bulk do not impair the aircraft's capabilities.

Der Puma "Pirate" stammt aus den 1970er-Jahren. 1971 leitete die Armée de Terre Studien zur Ausstattung des Transporthubschraubers Puma mit einer 20 mm-Kanone ein, wofür zwei Hubschrauber vorgesehen waren. Das wurde nie umgesetzt. Stattdessen übernahm die Armée de l'Air das Projekt, um die Escadrons de Transport stationnés Outre-Mer (ETOM) bzw. die Escadrons d'Hélicoptères stationnés Outre-Mer (EHOM) mit dem neuen Muster auszurüsten. Die Armée de Terre hatte wieder Interesse an dem Konzept, als es um die Verwendung für Spezialeinsätze des Détachement ALAT des Opérations Spéciales (DAOS) ging.
Der "Pirate" wurde mit einer Maschinenkanone GIAT CN MIT 621 F1 bewaffnet (Munition: Sprengbrandgranatpatronen), die fix im Mannschaftsraum montiert ist und eine effektive Reichweite von 1500 m hat. Die Kadenz beträgt 725 Schuss pro Minute.
