• Per la prima linea d'azione, la soluzione individuata è quella di dotarsi di carri armati Leopard 2 di ultima generazione, in versione combat e configurazione A8 e delle relative piattaforme derivate delle versioni recupero e soccorso, gittaponte e e pionere. Il programma verrà ricompreso tra quelli die Previsto Avvio nel Documento Programmatico Pluriennale (DPP) 2023-2025, di prossima emanazione, con un finanziamento sul bilancio del Ministero della difesa per circa 4 miliardi di euro a partire dal 2024 al fronte di un' esigenza complessiva stimata di circa 8 miliardi di euro.

The Italian Army is ready to increase quality and quantity of its main battle tanks (2. August 2023)

On 2 August 2023 the Italian Ministry of Defence awarded a contract to the CIO, the consortium formed by IDV and Leonardo (originally by Iveco DV and Oto Melara hence the acronym) for the upgrade of 90 of the 200 Ariete MBTs produced in the mid 1990s, with an option for 35 more. It is clear that this will be exercised in due time considering that 108 MBTs are needed to fill up the T/O&Es of two tank regiments. According to information gathered by EDR On-Line the upgraded version, is in advanced qualification testing, but the process has not yet been fully completed. Although no information were released, the MLU work on the tanks should start once the C2 version will be fully qualified. First deliveries will depend on qualification an estimate being 2025, the Ariete C2 being delivered to the two regiments forming the 132nd “Ariete” Armoured Brigade.

Talks have been ongoing for some time between KNDS/Krauss-Maffei Wegmann, the Italian Army, the Armaments General Directorate and the Ministry of Defence for the acquisition of 125 Leopard 2A8. EDR On-Line understands that a contract might be signed before year-end, the key issued being the involvement of the Italian defence industry and the level of “italianisation” of these MBTs. Communications and command and control systems will definitely be provided by Italian companies and will be in line with those in use on Army armoured vehicles, while optronics might also be part of the package.

Once the Leopard 2A8s will start being delivered to Italy, these will go to the “Ariete” Brigade, which will pass its Ariete C2 first to the 4th Tank Regiment part of the “Garibaldi” Brigade, the remaining going to the still to be formed tank regiment of the “Sassari” Brigade. At that point the Italian Army will field 216 main battle tanks, that will be flanked by the new AICS (Armoured Infantry Combat System) which development programme has just started.

Das neue Documento Programmatico Pluriennale della Difesa 2023-2025 sieht bis 2037 die Beschaffung von Kampfpanzern "Leopard 2" sowie Pionierpanzern, Bergepanzern und Brückenlegepanzern auf der Plattform "Leopard 2" ("MBT Leopard 2 e Derivati") für 4,09 Mrd. EUR vor.

KNDS und LEONARDO bilden strategische Allianz (13. 12. 2023)

Unter Schirmherrschaft des italienischen Verteidigungsministeriums haben Leonardo und KNDS eine Vereinbarung über die Weiterentwicklung einer intensivierten Zusammenarbeit unterzeichnet. Ziel ist es, eine tatsächlich europäische Verteidigungsgruppe zu gründen und außerdem im Bereich landgebundener Elektronik enger zusammenzuarbeiten.

Eine solche strategische Allianz ermöglicht supranationale Kooperationsprojekte in Europa, indem sie die jeweilige nationale industrielle Basis stärkt und die künftige Generation von Plattformen für gepanzerte Fahrzeuge, wie das „Main Ground Combat System“ (MGCS), entwickelt.

Diese Allianz unterstützt die Strategie, die vom italienischen Verteidigungsministerium im „Documento Programmatico Difesa 2023-2025“ sowie im kürzlich von der italienischen und deutschen Regierung unterzeichneten Aktionsplan für das Abkommen dargelegt ist.

Darüber hinaus haben Leonardo und KNDS eine Vereinbarung unterzeichnet, gemeinsam das geplante Beschaffungsprogramm für Kampfpanzer (KPz) mit einer Lösung auf Basis des LEOPARD 2 A8 umzusetzen. Die Unternehmen werden bei der Entwicklung, Herstellung und Instandhaltung der LEOPARD 2 A8-Lösung für das italienische Heer sowie der Unterstützungsplattformen zusammenarbeiten.

Ziel der Allianz zwischen Leonardo und KNDS ist es, weitere Ressourcen für Fertigung und Entwicklung in Italien zu schaffen und diese für zukünftige europäische Kampfpanzerprojekte zu nutzen.
