Finnish Navy Selects MAN 175D (15. Oktober 2020)
MAN Energy Solutions has announced the latest order for its MAN 175D four-stroke engine in connection with the building of four corvettes for the Finnish Navy. Each of the four ships will be equipped with 4 × MAN 12V175D-MEL GenSets with a total output of 7,700 kW (4 × 1920 kW) – in total, 16 GenSets.
Rauma Marine Constructions – based in Rauma, southwestern Finland – will construct the vessels for the so-called ‘Squadron 2020’ project between 2022-2025. The first test-runs at sea are already scheduled for 2024 with all vessels projected for completion by 2028.

The MAN 175D GenSets bound for Finland have a number of standout technical features:
  • double-elastic seating
  • a number of GenSets will have noise enclosures for silent operation
  • MAN 175D is the only high-speed navy GenSet able to reach that power level with 12 cylinders, which makes it more compact and more effective in terms of maintenance
  • the engines will be suitable for arctic operation and capable of functioning in extremely low air-intake temperatures.

KONGSBERG to supply Finnish Navy corvettes with Anti-Submarine Warfare and diver detection sonars (15. April 2020)
Kongsberg Maritime AS, Sensor & Robotics is celebrating the signing of a contract with Saab that will see KONGSBERG delivering its market-leading Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) and diver detection sonars for the Pohjanmaa-class corvettes currently being developed by the Finnish Navy under its Squadron 2020 project.

Under the terms of the contract, which equates to approximately 100MNOK, KONGSBERG will equip the vessels with its SS2030 and SD9500 sonars, both of which boast acoustic properties which make them ideally suited for deployment in shallow-water environments.

The SS2030, principally devised for ASW operations and capable of detecting torpedoes or other small objects in the water column, is an active hull-mounted sonar which utilises sophisticated tracking algorithms. Its electronically-stabilised transmitting and receiving beams can be tilted to adjust to challenging sound speed profiles, with its integrated Sound Propagation Model determining the optimal tilt settings and enhancing the Probability of Detection (PoD) ratio. The SS2030 sonars will be delivered to the Finnish Navy complete with hoist-able hull units and ice protection to ensure safe and efficient operation in the often harsh conditions of the Baltic Sea.

The SD9500, meanwhile, is a light and compact over-the-side dipping sonar with outstanding horizontal and vertical positioning capabilities for diver detection, ASW duties and volumetric survey assignments in shallow, reverberation-limited waters.

Changes proposed to funding multi-role fighters and Squadron 2020
Additional funding to safeguard the Squadron 2020 project and Finnish maritime industry

The Government’s fourth supplementary budget proposal for 2022 includes EUR 104 million in additional funding for the Squadron 2020 project for 2025-2027. The need for additional funding is based on the overall solution negotiated to secure the operating conditions of Rauma Marine Constructions and to ensure the completion of the Squadron 2020 project.

The two-part solution consists of measures that stabilise and secure the financial position and operational capacity of the shipyard and the changes made by the Defence Forces to the contractual arrangements of the Squadron 2020 project package. As a buyer, the Defence Forces will assume responsibility for the financial consequences of the project’s delay. These additional costs relate to the project itself, extending the life cycle of the vessels to be decommissioned, and timetable related and contractual changes with, for example, Saab, the combat system supplier.

Defence Forces to procure munition for naval guns

The Defence Forces will procure 57 mm munitions for use on the Navy’s vessels. The procurement is coordinated with Sweden so that the Finnish Defence Forces Logistics Command and the Swedish FMV (Försvarets Materielverk) purchase the same materiel at the same time, thus obtaining compatible munitions for the Finnish and Swedish navies at a lower price.

The supplier is BAE Systems Bofors AB, Sweden, the manufacturer of the Finnish Navy’s 57 mm artillery systems (57Mk3 and 57A).

The overall value of the procurement, without value added tax, is EUR 12.6 million. The procurement will complement the capabilities of the Navy’s surface combatants with regard to self-protection and air defence. The 57 mm artillery system is currently in use on Hämeenmaa-class minelayers, and the same system will be introduced for Pohjanmaa-class corvettes.
