MBDA Seeks Alternative Partners For Hypersonic Interceptor Project
Meanwhile, Beranger confirmed that MBDA is involved in two French test programs around the development of loitering munitions that were launched in 2022 by French defense materiel agency DGA and the country’s Defense Innovation Agency.

Larinae, named after the French term for the gull-family of birds, has been designed to attack targets up to 50 km (31 mi.) away while the smaller Colibri is expected to have a range of 5 km.

The only previously known MBDA loitering munition project was the British Army’s Fireshadow program to develop an Indirect Fire Precision Attack system, but that program was scrapped in 2018.

“This [loitering munition] is something where we are already active and MBDA is already investing quite a lot for the preparation of the future,” Beranger said.

AeroVironment Awarded $64.6 Million Contract by U.S. Army for Switchblade 300 Loitering Missile Systems
ARLINGTON, Va., April 26, 2023 – AeroVironment, Inc. (NASDAQ: AVAV) received additional funding of $64,565,126 on March 24 from the U.S. Army Tactical Aviation and Ground Munitions (TAGM) project office for the procurement of Switchblade® 300 loitering missile systems. This most recent firm-fixed-price contract increases the total funded amount of Switchblade systems under the original U.S. Army contract to $231,331,651. The contract will be managed by the U.S. Army Contracting Command, Redstone Arsenal, and the systems are scheduled to be delivered by July 2024.
This new U.S. Army contract includes foreign military sales of Switchblade 300 for the first time to France and another allied nation, expanding Switchblade’s footprint internationally.

French Army to equip new infantry regiments with 120mm mortars and loitering munitions by 2030
These new generation infantry regiments (RING in French) will keep the same workforce as today (around 1000 personnel), but they will be gradually set up by integrating the lessons learned from the war in Ukraine and the budgetary gains of the 2023-2030 military programming law.

Each will have a battery of four 120mm towed mortars, a weapon that was until now only used by artillery regiments (which have 132).

Army HQ told Shephards that these deliveries would come ‘within the early years of the coming military programming law.’ Until then, the infantry will use 81mm mortars with a 5700 meters range.
The RINGs will also have loitering munitions capable of operating within a range of approximately 5km (i.e., the range of a medium-range MMP missile already in use).

At this stage, the loitering munitions are not yet chosen, but the French special operations forces have determined the Switchblade 300 from AeroVironment as a suitable option, which will be provided quickly as part of the foreign military sales revealed in April.

In parallel, the French defence innovation agency (AID in French) launched two rapid developments for this kind of ammunition within the Colibri Project: one was won by MBDA and Novadem for a loitering rotary-wing munition, and by Nexter for the loitering fixed-wing ammunition.

The demonstrations are to take place in early 2024, which will allow the AID to put – or not – these projects in production.
All the artillery regiments will also get enduring loitering ammunitions that can fly an hour in a 50km radius. The Larinae project from the AID is to fulfil this need.

Nexter and EOS Technologies have been selected but have not yet been awarded a contract to develop a French fixed-wing solution quickly.

The aim of the LARINAE project is to test a medium-range remotely operated munition for the French army, capable of dealing with armoured targets. Nexter, a company of KNDS, and its partners are proposing a solution comprising a UAV system manufactured by EOS Technologie, a core-generating charge (CGN) produced by Nexter, and a GPS denied navigation system from TRAAK that makes it immune to jamming.
Nexter and its partners are offering a product that is currently absent from the French military arsenal. This remotely-operated ammunition will have a range of at least 80km and an autonomy of 3 hours.

Innovative in its core-generating charge technology, the remotely-operated munition will be capable of thwarting the active defences of armoured vehicles before piercing their armour.  Its reusability will also enable it to carry out intelligence missions thanks to an optronic ball which is able to detect a vehicle 15 km away by day and 3 km away by night. It will have navigation capabilities in a contested environment (jamming) and can also be reused when it has not attacked a target. Thanks to a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) system and a high-performance solution for arming and disarming the warhead, the operator will be able to recover it easily and safely.

Finally, the human being remains at the heart of the decision-making loop in every scenario, thanks to the ammunition's advanced telemetry. The optronic ball that equips it enables the operator to observe the terrain to make the decision to strike, which can be interrupted at any time.
To this end, the sovereign solution for remotely operated ammunition, entirely manufactured in France by the EOS – Nexter - TRAAK consortium, will take the form of a demonstrator within an unprecedented period of 18 months, in order to test new operating modes.
