The procurement includes the acquisition of 80 command, liaison and reconnaissance vehicles (CLRV) as well as the logistical support and communication system updates needed to maximise vehicle operability and optimise fleet availability.

In addition to its role as programme prime contractor, Thales is responsible – as it is for France's Scorpion programme – for developing and producing the common combat vetronics for the new platforms, including the provision of the vehicles' communication, local situational awareness, self-protection and navigation systems.

FN Herstal to equip Luxembourg’s army

The Ministry of Defence of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg has recently selected Thales, program prime contractor, FN Herstal and General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS), program subcontractors, to supply eighty Command Liaison and Reconnaissance Vehicles (CLRVs) to the Luxembourg Army.

These new generation armoured vehicles will integrate high-tech equipment, significantly improving communication, information management and collaborative combat capabilities, as well as crew safety.

The CLRVs will be equipped with deFNder® Medium Remote Weapon Stations, produced by FN Herstal in Belgium. These stations offer optimal safety for the operatorsand a modular architecture to meet a wide range of self-defence or collective missions.

Belgien und Luxemburg haben einen LoI zur Aufstellung eines binationalen Aufklärungsbataillons unterzeichnet. Es soll über 700 Soldaten umfassen und sowohl für nationale und binationale Einsätze, sowie für Einsätze im Rahmen regionaler oder internationaler Organisationen (z.B. der NATO) zur Verfügung stehen.

Das Bataillon wird in drei Phasen aufgestellt:

1. Fokussierung auf die Bataillone von Marche-en-Famenne (Belgien) und Diekirch (Luxemburg), mit anfänglicher Integration in Marche-en-Famenne
2. Aufstellung des binationalen Bataillons in Arlon und Inbetriebnahme von Einrichtungen in Luxemburg
3. Maximale Integration, mit Fokus auf Arlon bis 2030

The future Belgian-Luxembourg reconnaissance battalion will be essential for Luxembourg to enable its reconnaissance forces to integrate into the rapidly developing structures of both NATO and the EU, which are primarily intended for collective defence.

The signature of the above-mentioned cooperation agreement will definitively launch this future major military capability programme which will give birth to this battalion. Aiming at a strength of around 700 military personnel, they will be grouped initially into four reconnaissance companies, two of which will be Luxembourgish, supplemented by various bi-national support elements. During an initial phase, between 2025 and 2028, key Luxembourg personnel will be seconded to Belgium or even to France, to the competent headquarters, in order to set up the unit quickly. By 2030, the heart of the bi-national unit will be located in Arlon while maintaining a strong presence in the Grand Duchy. In concrete terms, branches with various force, support and back-up elements are supposed to be added in Belgium and Luxembourg. The sites in question will be located in Marche-en-Famenne and Diekirch, supplemented by additional logistic structures in the south of the Grand Duchy. In the long term, this bi-national unit is supposed to operate in both collective defence and crisis management frameworks, either by means of joint tactical sub-units or in a constituted manner.
