Saab and the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration, (FMV), have signed two agreements concerning the next generation of surface ships and corvettes. A Product Definition Phase for the Mid-Life Upgrades (MLU) of five Visby-class corvettes, as well as a Product Definition Phase for the next generation; Visby Generation 2 corvettes. The collected value of the contracts is 190 MSEK.

The contracts include requirements’ analysis and are respectively the start of the modification work of the five corvettes and the acquisition of the Visby Generation 2.

“The contract is a major step forward for Sweden’s surface combat capability, with the upgrade of current corvettes and the creation of the next generation vessels. The Visby corvettes have been pioneers for 20 years, and after Mid-Life Upgrades they will be well equipped for future assignments. The experience and knowledge that the Visby class has gathered over the years will feed into the development of Visby Generation 2,” said Lars Tossman, Head of Business Area Kockums.

The Visby Generation 2 is a development of Visby-class version 5 and will be equipped with a modern anti-ship missile system, torpedo system and air defence missile system.

The first Visby-class corvette was launched on June 8, 2000 and today five corvettes are in operational service. The product definition phase regarding Mid-Life Upgrades, aims to make the five ships in the class operationally relevant beyond 2040. In addition to modifying the ships' existing systems, an air defence missile system will be added as a new capability. The RBS15 anti-ship missile system will be upgraded to the latest version as well as will the torpedo system with the new Saab Lightweight Torpedo.

Sweden is reportedly rethinking plans to build a second generation of the iconic Visby-class corvette, with Stockholm seeking a larger capability that can be delivered faster.

In 2021, Saab signed two agreements with the Swedish defence procurement agency FMV for the new corvettes and an MLU for the existing Visby-class.

Now, Sweden is considering plans to procure hulls from abroad that Saab could fit out to gain new capabilities quickly.

The potential cancellation of the second-generation Visby and plans to procure hulls from abroad was first reported by Swedish outlet Blekinge Läns Tidning.

Sweden is procuring four new ships to strengthen its navy, and while details are yet to be finalised, the country has already settled on a name for the new class.

Named the Luleå class, Sweden’s four new vessels will be larger than the country’s existing fleet of Visby and Gävle-class corvettes.

Saab has received an order from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) for the Sea Giraffe 1X radar system to the Swedish navy. The order value is approximately SEK 340 million with deliveries 2024-2026.

The order includes Saab’s Sea Giraffe 1X naval radar system in different configurations for training as well as installation on surface ships.

Lockheed Martin has confirmed Sweden’s Visby class corvettes will use three-cell Extensible Launching System (ExLS) launchers to fire their forthcoming Common Anti-air Modular Missiles (CAMM). Adding CAMM to the stealthy ships’ arsenals will give them a valuable air defense capability they currently do not have, but the ExLS arrays also open the door to more readily integrating additional anti-air and anti-surface munitions.

Edward Dobeck, program director of Launching Systems at Lockheed Martin, talked about his company’s work relating to the Visby class in an interview with TWZ‘s Howard Altman from the floor of the Navy League’s Sea Air Space 2025 exhibition last week. Lockheed Martin provided additional details in response to follow-up questions from TWZ.

“So Sweden has a three-cell launcher that is being used primarily for the CAMM missile right now. That is providing them additional capabilities,” Dobeck said. “Sweden is looking at putting their launchers on the Visby class of ship … So now that they’re [Sweden] part of NATO, this provides them a great solution to provide them some vertical launch capability and bring that over to them.”

“The Vertical Launch solution for Visby is the 3-Cell Extensible Launching Systems (ExLS),” a Lockheed Martin representative also said when asked specifically what launcher Dobeck had been referring to.

Saab has been awarded a contract by the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) to equip the Swedish Navy’s five Visby-class corvettes with the Sea Ceptor air defence system from MBDA. This upgrade, valued at approximately SEK 1.6 billion, will significantly enhance Sweden’s and NATO’s air defence capabilities.

FMV has previously placed an order for the Sea Ceptor air defence system with MBDA. Saab's work on modifying the Visby-class corvettes and installing the system will begin in early 2026.
