VERT
Late 2015 it was received the first prototype of the Vehí culo de Exploración y Reconocimiento Terrestre ‘VERT’ (Land Reconnaisance and surveillance Vehicle), designed and developed by Navantia and GTD at the request of the Army Logistics Support Command (MALE).
The project was initiated and supervised by the Terrestrial Platforms Technical Section of the Procurement Department of the MALE, working together with NAVANTIA and GTD. in collaboration with the Cavalry Training and Doctrine Command and the "España n°11“ Cavalry Regiment, now part of the "Aragon" Brigade, which is based in Zaragoza, who have provided their life experience and vision as future users of the system.
This prototype of the Spanish Army was based on a VAMTAC tactical vehicle of the company UROVESA. NAVANTIA & GTD have developed the aforementioned latest generation of advanced observation sensors, in addition to the work of integration into the new 4x4 platform and performance testing.
Tests have been focused on integrating the new command and control system, also known by its English name “Battlefield Management System" (BMS) in the prototypes, to ensure that communication between them is possible. The vehicle has also a self-protection Mini Samson Remote Controlled Weapon Station (RCWS) system equipped with a I 2.70 m/m machine gun.
The VERT has been designed to equip cavalry reconnaissance units with a more versatile unit and the most modern means for locating and identifying the enemy. The first operative use of the VERT was durinp the Black Dragon exercise in Almeria. During the first weeks of May 2016, the VERT was tested by a ISTAR Battalion as part of the NATO VJTF (Very High Readiness Joint Task Force) This ISTAR Battalion is created on the basis of Group Procurement in Terrestrial Systems (GR0ST) No. 1 Intelligence Regiment based in Valencia.
The serial production has started following the signing of a contract with the Army for VERT systems. The total order includes the delivery of 16 VERT systems, including the SERT system. The industrial team is testing several configurations for the SERT, including the use of radar as the FLIR Ranger R20SS showed in a Middle East defense fair.
Now, Navantia and GTD are working with the design of a new Land Vigilance Vehicle (VTT- Vehículo de Vigilancia Terrestre) for the Intelligence units of the Spanish Army. The first prototype was ready at the end of 2018. We will first analyze the compatibility of the VERT VVT systems and install a demonstrator on a Vamtac S3, in order to test the configuration of the command posts (driver, observer and Commander), the communications system and mission software. The latter is the main novelty regarding the exploration vehicle.
