IAV 2023: Elbit presents Crossbow turreted mortar

Bild
Elbit Systems presented the Crossbow 120 mm turreted mortar at Defence IQ's International Armoured Vehicles (IAV) 2023 conference being held in London from 23 to 26 January.

The weapon can be installed in a mission module with minimal protrusion, can be easily operated by a single crew member, and is fuzed for fully automatic operation, according to Elbit.

It can fire the company's range of mortar rounds, including those with an extended range and precision guidance. It has a range of 10 km and a rate of fire exceeding 12 rds/min, achieving 16 rounds for the first minute, an Elbit representative told Janes on 23 January. Crossbow is designed to be fired on the move and to shoot and scoot with a multiple round simultaneous impact (MRSI) capability.

A second Elbit representative said it was developed over the last three years based on Elbit's experience in ammunition, fuzes, fire control, and command, control, communications, computers, and intelligence (C4I) integration. It is scheduled to enter service in 2024 with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), which financed its development.

Elbit prepares Crossbow 120 mm mortar for firing trials and export sales

Bild
Elbit’s new Crossbow 120 mm smooth bore turreted mortar system is expected to start unmanned firing trials in mid-2023, company officials have told Shephard.
New images of the Crossbow provided by Elbit shows it integrated onto the roof of an ARTEC Boxer (8x8) Multi-Role Armoured Vehicle (MRAV), a platform that is being adopted by an increasing number of countries for a range of battlefield missions.

As the turret has a minimum intrusion into the hull it can be integrated into many other platforms, tracked and wheeled.

There are a number of other potential customers for the Crossbow. These include the United Kingdom, whose largest mortar today is an 81 mm but who is understood to be interested in a turret-mounted 120 mm mortar for its future fleet of Boxer (8x8) MRAV.
The all-welded Crossbow turret is armed with a 120 mm smoothbore breech-loading mortar which is claimed to be able to fire all standard 120 mm mortar bombs including high explosive (HE), smoke and illuminating as well as precision-guided mortar (PGM) bombs.

According to Elbit, the operation of the Crossbow is fully automatic using just one person in the turret, or it can be operated remotely and is fitted with a computerised fire control system and a land navigation system for independent fire missions.

Maximum range depends on the 120 mm mortar bomb/charge combination but is more than 8 km using unassisted mortar bombs, with an assisted mortar bomb reaching more than 10 km.

It also features a Multi Round Simultaneous Impact (MRSI) capability as well as a fire-on-the move capability which would make its detection and neutralisation very difficult by threat forces.

In addition to having its normal indirect-fire capability, Crossbow will also have a direct-fire capability for urban operations. In this mission the 120 mm mortar would be laid onto the target using the roof-mounted Elbit remote weapon station armed with a stabilised 12.7 mm machine gun (MG).

The RWS is fitted with a day/night sight which incorporates a laser rangefinder for increased first-round hit capability.

The Crossbow 120 mm mortar turret would have a number of options including laser detectors and an Iron Fist hard kill defensive aids system (DAS) which is already in production and service.

Elbit says that the Crossbow will not be a replacement for any of the existing range of Elbit mortars, but complementary to their other systems including the Spear 120 mm soft-recoil mortar and the Sling 120 mm mortar system for lighter platforms, both of which are already in service.
