Request for Tender release for Protected Mobile Fires
The Morrison Government’s 2019 election commitment to build 30 self-propelled howitzers, creating up to 350 jobs, is progressing on schedule with the release of a Request for Tender in September 2020 for the Protected Mobile Fires project.
The Request for Tender will be released to preferred supplier Hanwha Defence Australia, to build and maintain 30 self-propelled howitzers and 15 armoured ammunition resupply vehicles, and their supporting systems.
“The self-propelled howitzers will be built in the Geelong region, with ongoing deep maintenance conducted in the same Australian facility to support the systems throughout their service life.”
The Request for Tender will progress this first phase of the Protected Mobile Fires capability.

Based in Greater Geelong, the contract will procure Self-Propelled Howitzers and Armoured Ammunition Resupply Vehicles, under the LAND 8116 Phase 1 project.

AUSTRALIA INVEST IN WORLD-LEADING TECHNOLOGY FROM KONGSBERG FOR ITS NEW ARTILLERY
Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KONGSBERG) has signed a contract worth AUD 67M with Hanwha Defense Australia following a recent announcement by the Australian Government to procure “Huntsman” self-propelled howitzers and ammunition resupply vehicles.
The contract was signed in December 2021 and was reported in KONGSBERG Q4 release in February.
Through this program, KONGSBERG will deliver both CORTEX ICS (Integrated Combat Solution) and Odin Fire Control System to the Australian Army. The program involves a significant, further development of the Norwegian VIDAR solution for K9 artillery, and it will generate both work in Norway and training at Kongsberg Defence Australia.
Sights on a lethal game changer (14. Februar 2023)
For the first time in its history, the Army will have the ability to accurately hit surface targets hundreds of kilometres away with guided missiles.
The high mobility artillery rocket system (HIMARS) will be acquired as the first land-based, surface-to-surface missile system, which will be a component of Defence’s future long-range strike capability.
The American-designed Lockheed Martin system has a range of 300km, with plans to make munitions capable of even longer distances.
“It’s survivable because you can shoot and move far quicker and use all existing roads,” Major Bowles said.
“It’s lighter as well. We can get it on to LHDs [landing helicopter docks] and especially C-130s and C-17s [aircraft] for transporting.
“What we’re looking at is a truck that carries an integrated, launcher-module system. So for operators, any of the issues they will come across will most likely be simple, mechanical ones.”
With the ADF receiving 20 of the wheel-based launchers, the Royal Australian Artillery (RAA) will increase its force.
“We do plan to grow the RAA by one battery in phase one of the acquisition,” Major Bowles said.
“In later phases we’re looking to grow to an additional regiment over the next decade.
The initial delivery is due in 2025, with the final operating capability planned for 2029.
