"Bestellte" sind so eine Sache, da sie eben meistens als Ersatz für vorhandene verwendet werden. Deutschland hat z. B. auch Eurofighter bestellt, dafür mustern sie die älteren Modelle aus.

In Frankreich (um halbwegs zum Thema zurückzukommen) ersetzen neue Rafale teilweise ältere Mirage.

USA ‘welcomes’ Greece’s interest in buying the F-35
The US Embassy in Greece has welcomed Athens’ interest in buying the Lockheed Martin F-35 stealth fighter.
“The United States, at the highest levels, has welcomed Greece’s interest in acquiring the F-35 for the Hellenic Air Force,” says US Ambassador to Greece, Geoffrey Pyatt on 30 November. “We have signaled our support for procurement and are working closely together on a future acquisition programme, which would enhance Greece’s defence capabilities, ensure interoperability with US Armed Forces and improve regional stability.”

The statement rebuffs speculation that the USA might not be willing to supply the stealth fighter to Greece. “All reports to the contrary are false and misrepresentations of US policy,” says Pyatt.

Greece’s Proto Thema newspaper first reported last month Athen’s interest in buying 18 to 24 F-35s. The country is in a rush to buy the combat aircraft and is willing to buy “new or used”, according to the report, which claims to be based on a letter sent from the Greek Ministry of National Defence to the US government.

“The decision to enter (Greece) in the programme of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter will be based on a variety of factors, such as the delivery programme of the fighters, the repayment plan, the configuration of the aircraft and a possible combination to obtain a total of 18-24 jets (new or used by the US Air Force, if available)”, the letter reportedly says. “Your immediate response will be appreciated… Due to internal fiscal arrangements and other applicable rules within the EU budget and deficit framework, it is crucial that the first F-35s are delivered in 2021. For our part, we will do everything possible to implement this ambitious programme.”

Plans to acquire the F-35 come after Greece announced plans in September to obtain 18 Dassault Rafale fighters and upgrade 10 of its Mirage 2000s into the “-5” standard.

French-Made Jets, Upgrades Will Cost $2.8 Billion (excerpt)
(Source: Associated Press; published Dec. 17, 2020)

ATHENS --- Greece's government said Thursday it will pay 2.32 billion euros ($2.8 billion) for the purchase of French-made Rafale fighter jets and an upgrade of compatible missiles, under a major military overhaul amid tensions with neighboring Turkey.

Delivery of the 18 jets will begin in mid-2021 and be completed over two years, government spokesman Stelios Petsas said.

Greece has earmarked 11.5 billion euros ($14.1 billion) to modernize its armed forces over five years amid deteriorating relations with NATO ally Turkey over offshore energy rights in the eastern Mediterranean.

The Rafale jets will include 12 aircraft currently in service with the French military and six new planes to be built by Dassault Aviation. (end of excerpt)

(EDITOR’S NOTE: French Armed Forces Minister Florence Parly was due to fly to Athens on April 19 to sign the contract, although Greek media report the trip may be postponed because of the pandemic.
The contracts with various French companies will also cover the maintenance of Greece’s fleet of Mirage-2000 MK-2 fighter aircraft, the upgrade of the Sperwer drones operated by the Greek Army and other, unspecified electronic systems.
The first six used Rafales will be delivered in mid-2021 and the rest by the middle of 2023. The contract’s cost breaks down into €1.92 billion for the Rafales and another €400 million for their weapon package, Stelios Petsas said in a Dec. 17 televised briefing, including Meteor long-range air-to-air missiles, Scalp cruise missiles and Exocet anti-ship missiles.
The Hellenic Air Force will send the first four pilots to France for training in early 2021 so that by May the first used Rafales, taken from the French Air Force inventory, will be ready for delivery to Greece.)

  • MBDA to Supply MICA and SCALP EG / STORM SHADOW Missile Systems to the Hellenic Air Force (8. Januar 2004)
The Greek Ministry of Defence has formalized the contract for MBDA’s MICA air-to-air and Scalp EG / Storm Shadow long-range, stand off air-to-ground missile systems to equip the Hellenic Air Force’s fleet of Mirage 2000-5 combat aircraft.

This represents a second tranche of MICA missiles following an earlier order placed two years ago by the Greek authorities. The total number of MICA missiles now under order by Greece stands at 100 (including both the RF and IR variants of the missile). The air force has ordered a total of 34 Scalp EG / Storm Shadow missile systems.

Griechenland kauft Rafale

Greece signs for Rafale combat aircraft
Greece and France have finalised a deal for 18 Dassault Rafale combat aircraft for the Hellenic Air Force (HAF), valued at an estimated EUR1.92 billion (USD2.35 billion).
The 18 Rafales will comprise 12 surplus French Air and Space Force aircraft (10 single seaters and two twin seaters) and six new-build aircraft to be built in France. To meet the urgent need of the Greek authorities, the deliveries of aircraft will begin in the summer of 2021 and will be spread over two years. The additional logistic support contract will support the HAF’s Rafale air activity over four-and-a-half years.

As previously reported by Janes, another EUR400 million will be used to purchase MBDA Meteor beyond-visual-range air-to-air missiles (BVRAAMs) and to upgrade missiles already in the HAF inventory, namely Mica air-to-air missiles, Scalp cruise missiles, and Exocet anti-ship missiles, for carriage by the Rafales.

Interview Of Defence Minister Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos to “Alpha TV” Prime Time News, with Journalist Antonis Sroiter (26. Januar 2021)
ANTONIS SROITER: So, with your signature, Greece took a very important step towards armaments, after a very long time. It got the Rafale. I read, I hear, you saw it as well, that there is an intention, from the Air Force’s side, and provided that the financial situation will allow it, to proceed to a new order; Minister, I would like to ask if this perspective is on the table…

NIKOLAOS PANAGIOTOPOULOS: Everything is on the table, in the context of a massive and organized plan to re-equip the Armed Forces.

We have designed this plan very attentively, setting priorities, ranking the needs, under the HNDGS’s coordination over the other General Staffs, yet of course with the needed contribution from the Army, Air Force and Navy General Staffs; we designed it, we submitted it for approval to the Prime Minister, who approved it, and we now proceed to its implementation. It is a very ambitious, long-term plan, it is not a sudden “armaments frenzy” taking over our country, it will progress over time and broadly cover all three Branches of the Armed Forces, including – other than the acquisition of new systems, e.g. the Rafale – the upgrade of existing systems, which is also very important. If we upgrade and bring back to full operability all that we already have, we will cover a large part of our needs; however we also need new ones.

In this context, we proceed to some acquirements, which make the biggest impression to the people, such as the 18 Rafales. Yesterday, we had the pleasure to sign with the French side.

To tell you the truth, only yesterday did I realise how content, but also surprised, was the French side, seeing that we proceeded with this contract in record time, within four months since the beginning of the negotiations, and in less than a year, something that is also unusual, at least for the Greek reality – but not only –, the first aircraft will be delivered to the Air Force this summer.

ANTONIS SROITER: Give us the story, if any. I was informed that, among the scenarios on the table (as I was looking for the infamous intermediary vessel, until receiving the frigates – and we shall refer later to the frigates), there was one saying that, instead of receiving an intermediary vessel, we would further enhance our Air Force with more Rafale, so as to fill the gap.

NIKOLAOS PANAGIOTOPOULOS: Look, the aspiring plan of the so-called “Force Structure” provides for the acquirement of 40 new combat aircraft, in the long run. We got 18 Rafale. Obviously, we could acquire more, yet it is the Air Force, the General Staff, to advise us on what to do from now on. We take into consideration the experts’ proposals, and this is what we, as Political Leadership, try to implement.

Sooner or later, we shall discuss the acquirement of F-35. Now is not the time yet, but sooner or later we shall change to fifth generation aircraft. The basic 5th generation aircraft at NATO level now is the F-35. However, we could always discuss the issue of acquiring more Rafale.

This year, there is an ongoing upgrade programme for four F-16 Viper, which is currently the most advanced F-16 version globally. In a few days, the first Viper shall fly in America, so as to undergo the structural reforms, rather interventions, needed so as to be subsumed in the availabilities; then, we shall enter the production line, so as to produce from eight to twelve, based on this programme, for the next seven years.
