Bewaffnet wird die P-8A mit Torpedos aus den USA, Wasserbomben und – zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt – mit sogenannten Seezielflugkörpern zum Einsatz gegen Schiffe. Mittelfristig sollen zudem Stingray-Torpedos aus Großbritannien dazukommen. Eingesetzt werden sollen die Flugzeuge hauptsächlich über dem Nordatlantik zwischen Grönland, Island und Großbritannien.

Das Marinefliegergeschwader 3 erhält heute das erste von acht neuen Hauptwaffensystemen, den Seefernaufklärer P-8A Poseidon. 3,1 Milliarden Euro werden in die neuen Flugzeuge aus USUnited States-Produktion investiert.

This transmittal reports the addition of the following MDE items: four (4) P-8A Patrol Aircraft; six (6) MIDS JTRS 5; eleven (11) LN-251 with EGIs; six (6) LAIRCM System Processor Replacements (each includes five (5) Exelis EGR GPS Receivers integrated with SAASM); and six (6) GLTA). The following non-MDE items will also be included: aircraft spare parts; spare engines; support equipment; operational support systems; training and training devices; software; ETA; logistics LTA; RoR; transportation; aircraft ferry; and other related elements of logistics and program support. The estimated total cost of the new items is $3.7 billion. The estimated MDE value will increase by $2.4 billion to a revised $4.3 billion. The estimated non-MDE value will increase by $1.3 billion to a revised $2.6 billion. The estimated total case value will increase by $3.7 billion to a revised $6.9 billion. MDE constitutes $4.3 billion of this total.
