Our Boxer Programme team recently visited the Australian Boxer Programme to see their progress, learn lessons and build collaboration on shared issues and opportunities, ahead of our own vehicle deliveries and training starting later this year.

- DVD 2024: Rheinmetall and Patria debut first UK prototype of Boxer mortar carrier
Rheinmetall and Patria have for the first time displayed the UK prototype of their Nemo semi-automatic turreted 120 mm mortar on a modified Boxer armoured vehicle.
While a Boxer and Nemo combination has been displayed before, this design – displayed at the Defence Vehicle Demonstration (DVD) 2024 exhibition held in Millbrook, United Kingdom, on 18 and 19 September – has a rear compartment raised by around 14 cm compared with others. This modification is based on discussions with the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) on meeting a Generic Vehicle Architecture (GVA) requirement for emergency crew egress and access to the driver's compartment, James Butler, head of Business Capture at Rheinmetall told Janes.
The BoxerArmoured Mortar Variant (AMV) will be put forward for the UK's Land Mobility Programme, Boxer batch two mortar vehicle requirement. Butler says the companies expect this to commence in the coming months.
The MoD has funded study work for the project, with the rest of the capital put up by Rheinmetall and Patria.
There were three candidates for the 120 mm mortar including Elbit Systems' Crossbow and Rheinmetall's Ragnarok. Butler said that Rheinmetall wanted an in-service turret capability with crew protection as a key feature, which lead to the choice of Nemo.
Lauri Pauniaho, director of weapon systems at Patria Land Oy, told Janes Nemo is combat proven, without saying where. Nemo is in service with Saudi Arabia's National Guard and on the UAE's Ghannatha-class high-speed multirole ships. Sweden is also a user on eight fast mortar boats and two operating from track transportable containers.

- DVD 2024 – Rheinmetall and Patria present NEMO-Boxer for UK’s armoured mortar requirement
“The armoured mortar variant is mounted onto one of the British Army’s existing drive units, which highlights the flexible approach of the Boxer design,” James Butler, Rheinmetall’s Head of Business Capture told EDR On-Line on the 19th September. “There are some differences to the standard mission module that you will see; notably, the roofline is higher, which is designed to allow the crew egress from beneath the turret basket,” he added. “Another change is that the turret has been moved to the left of the hull so that the driver can leave the vehicle to the rear,” he went on to explain.
“The vehicle dictates the turret layout,” Lauri Pauniaho, Patria’s Director of Weapon Systems added. “The turret sits in the middle of the roof when it is fitted to the Patria Armoured Modular Vehicle for example, this is because the driver has independent access,” he said.
Conversations about the UK’s requirements have taken place between OCCAR and the British government. “We provided support to the customer in their selection from three potential mortar systems,” Butler said. The team is currently awaiting the next stage of discussions with the customer. The procurement timeline – as is the case for many of the British Army’s nascent programmes – are unclear. The number of systems required is also unclear.
The NEMO turret system itself would be delivered in the same configuration as Patria’s other customers, albeit with some potential adjustments to the fire control system that are being developed by Patria internally, Pauniaho explained.

Boxer has successfully completed its sea water fording trial at Instow beach in North Devon!
The 38.5-tonne vehicle performed excellently showing stability and control moving in the water, proving that Boxer can ford unprepared.
