NSPA supports Spanish Army with new contract for the mid-life upgrade of ARTHUR Radars

LUXEMBOURG, 20 October 2025 - The NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) has awarded a contract to Svenska Aeroplan AktieBolaget (SAAB) for the mid-life upgrade of ARTHUR Radars for the Spanish Army. The contract includes the upgrade of four radars, training for operators and technicians alongside spares and documentation.

Spanien ist offiziell aus der Beschaffung des SILAM (Elbit Systems PULS) ausgestiegen und hat auch einen Vertrag über Panzerabwehrlenkwaffen SPIKE LR2 annulliert:

Letzte Woche hat die Staatssekretärin im spanischen Verteidigungsministerium, Amparo Valcarce Garcia, vor dem Abgeordnetenhaus ausgesagt, dass der Vertrag für SILAM aufgelöst worden ist, wie auch sämtliche damit verbundenen Lizenzen von Elbit Systems. Das Verteidigungsministerium untersuche nun "nationale Alternativen", die mit "technologischer Eigenständigkeit" und "nationalen Lieferketten" verbunden seien.

Wie auch immer man sich das vorstellen mag. Fakt ist: Es gibt derzeit keinen europäischen Hersteller von Raketenartilleriesystemen, abgesehen von Derivaten des nicht mehr ganz taufrischen tschechischen RM-70 (Excalibur Army; KONSTRUKTA Defence) und zwei polnischen Modellen für ungelenkte Raketen (RL-40 LANGUSTA, LANGUSTA II). Der französische Turgis Gaillard FOUDRE existiert aktuell nur als Prototyp.

Die DGAM hat am 19. Dezember die Lieferauftrag für ein neues Artilleriesystem auf Radfahrgestell mit einem Volumen von 2,68 Mrd. EUR und für ein Artilleriesystem auf Kettenfahrgestell mit einem Volumen von ca. 4,5 Mrd. EUR an ein Konsortium der Firmen INDRA Sistemas, SA und ESCRIBANO MECHANICAL & ENGINEERING, S.L.U. [UTE ATP RUEDAS bzw. UTE ATP CADENAS] vergeben:

Indra’s participation in the forum also included Miguel Ángel de Díez, Operational Advisor for Land Systems, who spoke at the roundtable on fire superiority. Moderated by Major General Alberto Javier García Romera, Chief of Staff of the Land Force, de Díez showcased the capabilities of Indra’s new fifth-generation multifunction radar, the MTR 5. This cutting-edge system is specially designed for high-intensity scenarios, offering unique detection and tracking capabilities.

“The MTR 5 radar calculates the origin of enemy fire, alerts friendly units that may be threatened, provides data to interception systems to destroy projectiles in flight, and supports decision-making to issue counter-fire orders. It has a high detection capability for both surface (land and naval) and aerial targets, including those with low radar signatures such as UAVs, with a level of precision far superior to any current counter-battery radar,” explained de Díez.

With a range exceeding 90 kilometers, the radar is mounted on a vehicle for full mobility and rapid deployment and withdrawal. Its radar signature has also been reduced to make it harder to detect, and it can be used independently or integrated into a surveillance network. Additionally, it can act as a remote sensor for Indra’s Semi-Automatic Anti-Aircraft Artillery Operations Center (COAAAS), which controls medium-, short-, and very short-range weapon systems to protect a specific point or area.

Radar MTR-5: una capacidad nacional en desarrollo

El radar MTR-5, actualmente en desarrollo por la empresa española Indra, representa una apuesta nacional por dotar al Ejército de Tierra de un sistema de localización de armas (WLR) con tecnología de vanguardia y plena soberanía industrial. Concebido como parte de la familia de radares multimisión MTR, el MTR-5 está optimizado para la misión de localización de fuegos indirectos, vigilancia táctica y apoyo a fuegos amigos.

Entre sus principales características destacan:

• Antena digital en banda S, que permite el seguimiento simultáneo de múltiples trayectorias y gran precisión.

• Arquitectura modular, basada en subconjuntos TRMA (T/R modular assembly), lo que facilita el mantenimiento, la logística y futuras ampliaciones de prestaciones.

• Alta fiabilidad y resistencia electromagnética.

• Posibilidad de operar en configuración fija
  • rotatoria, ofreciendo cobertura sectorial
  • 360°, adaptándose a la misión y entorno operativo.

El MTR-5 podrá integrarse en sistemas C2 mediante protocolos estándar y, en el futuro, se plantea su empleo como sensor clave en el programa SILAM (Sistema Lanzacohetes de Alta Movilidad), configurándose como un radar multifunción con capacidades tanto de detección de amenazas como de contribución al ciclo completo de targeting.

Su calendario de desarrollo prevé la entrega de los primeros sistemas en 2026, con integración en plataformas móviles y validación operativa en entorno táctico entre 2026 y 2027. Una vez desplegado, el MTR-5 se perfila como un pilar nacional para la localización de fuegos indirectos, dotando a la artillería de campaña de un sensor moderno, robusto y plenamente interoperable.

Ende des Jahres wurde ein Entwicklungsauftrag für ein Raketenwerfersystem kurzer Reichweite an INDRA vergeben. Zwei Prototypen, von denen einer in einer "Stand-alone"-Konfiguration (d.h. vermutlich auf einem Dreibein oder dgl.) und der andere auf einer Seeplattform und in das Kampfsystem SCOMBA (Navantia SCOMBA/CATIZ) integriert wird:

SILAEM (Servicio de I+D) Diseño, fabricación, calificación, validación, integración, instalación y pruebas de dos sistemas de lanzamiento de misiles de corto alcance Fire and Forget, uno en stand-alone y otro integrado en SCOMBA.

Indra Group and Hanwha Group sign a binding agreement for the development of innovative self-propelled artillery systems

Indra Group and Hanwha Aerospace, a key affiliate of Hanwha Group, have signed a binding agreement (MoU) today for the development of state-of-the-art self-propelled artillery systems, tailored to the needs of the Spanish Armed Forces, and providing Spain with autonomous capacity and sovereignty for the design and manufacture of advanced tracked land platforms.

The solution that Indra will design and manufacture for the Spanish Armed Forces will consist of a tracked artillery vehicle —128 units—, an ammunition resupply vehicle —120 units—, a command and control vehicle —11 units— and a recovery vehicle —21 units—. Together, these assets form the tracked SPA system defined in the Special Modernisation Programme jointly developed by Indra Group and EM&E Group.

Indra will manufacture in Spain the hulls of these vehicles and equip them with: its mission system, which governs vehicle operations; the 360º vision system, providing advanced situational awareness; the battlefield management system (BMS), which enables interoperability and coordination in real time with other platforms; and the communications systems. Indra will also design and manufacture the command post systems entirely, integrating its own technologies and equipping them with communications systems and NBC, and Automatic Fire and Explosion Extinguishing System (AFES).

The project is based on Hanwha’s K9 family vehicles, from which Spain will design and manufacture its own hull—over which Indra will have design authority—and into which various national systems will be integrated to provide industrial capabilities and a proprietary family of vehicles.
