Spanish MoD approves GDELS-SBS to lead VCR 8x8 Program with INDRA, Sapa Placencia and Escribano

GDELS-Santa Bárbara Sistemas, Indra Sistemas, Sapa Placencia and Escribano Mechanical & Engineering will constitute a company that will be in charge of executing the VCR 8x8 Program, when the Ministry of Defense signs the commitment that allows the constitution of said company.

This company will be in charge of the supply of 348 8x8 Wheeled Combat Vehicles (VCR), as well as their maintenance and life cycle support, and their international commercialization. These vehicles will be delivered within an estimated period of seven years from the end of the development of the program.

The objective of the four companies through this partnership is to satisfy all the operational objectives and meeting the needs of the Spanish Army as well as the Ministry of Defense and that the VCR 8x8 Program becomes a driving force in the national industry. In this regard, the development of the program involves an ambitious National Industrial Plan, thereby facilitating the authority of design maintainance in Spain and fostering widespread participation by national industry in this, at a percentage of no less than 70%.

The programme will have a special impact in Asturias, Seville, Guipúzcoa and Madrid, where the creation of 650 direct jobs and another 1,000 indirect ones is foreseen.

The programme will additionally generate industrial property for national industry and will allow national sovereignty to be maintained over a product that represents an essential capacity for national defence.

Defensa da un paso esencial para reactivar el Programa del 8x8

La ministra de Defensa, Margarita Robles, al amparo del Artículo 346 del Tratado de Funcionamiento de la Unión Europea, ha firmado el compromiso que permitirá constituir la Sociedad Anónima, conformada por las empresas españolas Indra Sistemas S.A., Santa Bárbara Sistemas S.A., Sapa Placencia S.L. y Escribano Mechanical & Engineering S.L., a los solos efectos de la ejecución del Programa VCR 8x8.


Tras esta firma, comienza un período de licitación con la intención de que dicho contrato pueda firmarse durante el tercer trimestre de 2020.

Im dritten Quartal 2020 soll der Vertrag über das Programm VCR 8x8 mit dem Joint Venture von Indra, GDELS SBS, Sapa und Escribano abgeschlossen werden. Obwohl sich die geplanten fünf Technologiedemonstratoren erst in der Erprobung bzw. teils womöglich noch in der Fertigung befinden.

In das VCR 8x8 sollte ursprünglich ein aktives Schutzsystem gegen Panzerabwehrlenkwaffen (z.B. die Lenkwaffe 9M133 Kornet mit 5500 m Reichweite und 80 % Trefferwahrscheinlichkeit) integriert werden. In der Anfangsphase des Projekts "VCR 8x8" wurden verschiedene aktive Schutzsysteme betrachtet, darunter GALIX und TROPHY. Es schien, dass TROPHY mehr Möglichkeiten bieten würde, es wurde aber letztendlich nicht installiert.

Außerdem wurden folgende Lösungen untersucht:

• Zusatzpanzerung gegen ballistische Bedrohungen und RPG

• Laserwarnempfänger

• Integration eines Universaladapters und eines IED-Räumgeräts

• Akustisches Schützendetektionssystem

El secretario de Estado de Defensa supervisa los avances del programa VCR 8X8

El secretario de Estado ha podido constatar la madurez del proyecto y ha adelantado que “los dos primeros vehículos harán en julio las primeras pruebas de tiro en el campo de Zaragoza”, con lo que el contrato con las empresas se podrá formalizar en agosto y los primeros vehículos operativos en el primer o segundo trimestre de 2022.

Die zwei ersten Fahrzeuge werden im Juli auf dem Truppenübungsplatz Zaragoza erste Schießversuche durchführen. Im August soll der Liefervertrag mit den Herstellerfirmen abgeschlossen werden und die ersten Lieferungen aus der Serie beginnen im ersten und zweiten Quartal 2022.

Yes, this was only a presentation, probably for the Programa tecnológico 4 (PT-4). The DGAM has the ambition to integrate components from the program Red Radio de Combate (RRC), which aims to replace Mercurio 2000 and PR4G through a new combat net radio, comprising UHF-, VHF- and HF-radios. The Bittium radios, ordered in September 2018, are just components for the demonstration phase of the VCR 8x8-program.

General Dynamics European Land Systems awarded €733 million (USD $870 million) of a €1.74 billion contract for 348 Spanish 8x8 combat vehicles

The Spanish Ministry of Defense today awarded a €1.74 billion (USD $2.06 billion) contract to a joint venture of General Dynamics European Land Systems-Santa Bárbara Sistemas (GDELS-SBS) and three other companies to deliver 348 8x8 Wheeled Combat Vehicles (VCR), their maintenance and life cycle support, as well as support their international commercialization. The GDELS-SBS contract is for €733 million (USD $870 million).

The program is expected to grow to a total of approximately 1,000 vehicles.

The vehicle, named “Dragón” by the Spanish Army, is based on the GDELS 8x8 PIRANHA 5’s combat wheeled vehicle and includes all Spanish national technologies as required by the Spanish MoD. It is expected to be delivered over a seven-year period.

The GDELS-SBS joint venture (JV) will manufacture the 8x8 VCR at GDELS sites in Trubia and Seville, Spain, with the collaboration of the other Spanish JV members.

The JV members include GDELS-Santa Bárbara Sistemas, Indra Sistemas, Sapa Placencia, and Escribano Mechanical & Engineering. The Spanish Ministry of Defense mandated a National Industrial plan in which Spanish industry participation must be no less than 70% of the total program. The JV was established to ensure that all operational objectives and needs of the Spanish Army and the Spanish Ministry of Defense are fully met and to fulfill the requirements of the government’s industrial plan.

GDELS-Santa Bárbara Sistemas program participation will involve approximately 650 direct and 1,100 indirect employees.
