FMS 2024: Patria unveils TREMOS mortar system

Patria director for weapon systems Lauri Pauniaho said the system was developed in close co-operation with the Finnish Defence Forces (FDF), taking only a year to produce the first prototype for proof-of-concept tests, with the main objective of increasing the mobility of existing mortars. Designed to provide infantry fire support, TREMOS can open fire in multiple round simultaneous impact (MRSI) mode within 60 seconds of arriving at a firing position and leave immediately after the last round is fired. It has the same recoil system as Patria's Advanced Mortar System (AMOS) to reduce the stress of firing without requiring ground support, allowing it to leave a position after the last round is fired. According to Patria and the FDF, operators can “bring your own barrel (BYOB) and ammunition”, with TREMOS being compatible with all qualified 120 mm and 81 mm smoothbore mortar rounds firing all types of ammunition with fire control using existing firing tables.

TREMOS has an integration module with a connecting interface to facilitate the system's quick integration into vehicles such as 4×4, 6×6, 8×8, and light tracked vehicles and moving it from one vehicle to another using a hooklift.

Defence Forces to procure counter-battery radars to develop capabilities

The Defence Forces’ Logistic Command has received a mandate, on 11.1.2019, from Minister of Defence Jussi Niinistö to procure counter-battery radars for the Defence Forces. The radar systems, training for the systems and spare parts will be ordered from the Israeli company ELTA Systems.

The new systems will provide the Army with capabilities to locate the opponent’s firing units and launch counter-battery activities. The new capability will develop the Army fires while counter-battery activities restrict the opponent’s freedom to use fire power.

In addition to target acquisition for counter-battery activities, the modern multi-role radars can be used, at the same time, also for fire observing and air surveillance. The Defence Forces invited international tenders and the selected system was tested in Finland in spring 2018. It excelled in the tendering process and in meeting the requirements.

The radar system deliveries are scheduled for 2021; the contract also includes options for further procurements. Millog Oy and Telva Oy will be in charge of systems maintenance services. Millog Oy is the Defence Forces strategic partner in maintenance and Telva Oy represents ELTA Systems in Finland.

At the Arctic Event 2025 organised by Patria in Lappland a new truck-mounted self-propelled 155 mm howitzer was visible, the ARVE, which anticipates the possible needs of the Finnish Defence Forces, indirect fire becoming more and more important looking at today scenarios

“This concept has been around for quite some time, we never publicised it, but it was there, both the truck and the gun were there,” Jukka Holkeri, Executive Vice President of Global Division at Patria told EDR On-Line.

The proposed solution employs the artillery elements of the 155GH52 towed howitzer, also produced by Patria in the past, of which over 50 systems remain in service with the FDF; this means that while a solution might be re-using existing howitzer, the decision might also involve the production of new ones. Both solutions are feasible, according to Mr. Holkeri, and Patria is ready to answer some plans that are surfacing in the FDF but looks with interest also on the export market.

The gun is mounted at the rear if the truck, a spade being lowered before firing, which brings most of the recoil forces into the ground. It takes around 90 seconds to fir the first round since the ARVE has stopped, the laying system being manual. The elevation angle is comprised between -3° and +60°, loading being manual with flick rammer. Maximum rate of fire is eight rounds per minute, with three rounds in the first 15 seconds, while sustained fire rate is two rounds per minute, the crew being made of six personnel.

Rounds are contained in boxes located alongside the truck, a total of 24 complete ammunition being carried. With standard ammunition maximum range is 40 km. The elevation arc of the gun goes from -3° to +60°; in indirect fire mode, with elevation between +12° and +60°, the ARVE can shoot in the -90°/+50° sector, while in direct fire mod that sector becomes -90°/+50°. Once the fire action is finished, the self-propelled gun leaves the place in around 45 seconds.

The artillery system is installed on a Sisu E13TP 8×8 truck, the whole complex being 11.5 metres long, 2.6 metres wide and 3.5 metres high, maximum combat mass being less than 28 tonnes. Powered by a 500 hp engine, it can reach a maximum speed on road of over 100 km/h and has a cruising range of over 600 km, its tank containing 400 litres of fuel. Mobility wise, it can climb a 30° (57.7%) and ford a 1-metre-deep water obstacle.

Description:

Finnish Defence Forces is procuring Point Detonating Fuzes (“The PD”) and Multi-Option Fuzes ( “The MOF”), which are used with the Finnish artillery guns (155 K9FIN, 155 K 98 and 155 K 83-97). Approximated requested amount of Point Detonating Fuzes is 120.000 pcs and Multi-Option Fuzes 30.000 pcs during years 2026 - 2028. Procurement includes options.

Few critical technical requirements regarding the product as following:

• The PD and the MOF shall be compatible with the gun specified according to Joint Ballistics Memorandum of Understanding (JBMoU) specifications.

• The PD and the MOF shall be compatible with the K9FIN weapon system and its subsystems such as loading device, ammunition stowage.

• The PD and the MOF shall be compatible with NATO standard 2” fuze cavity according to STANAG 2916 Ed. 3 and AOP-68 Ed. A Ver. 1 (Figure 1).

• The PD and the MOF shall be able to be used in climatic conditions C1, A3 according to AECTP-230.

• The PD and the MOF shall be able to be stored, maintained, transported in climatic conditions C2, A3 according to AECTP-230.

• During the life cycle the PD and the MOF shall be safe to store, transport and handle and remain workable in field conditions.

• The PD and the MOF shall be usable and operable in all weather and visibility conditions including high relative humidity, rain, dust and snowfall without any special arrangements.

• The PD and the MOF shall be settable manually.

• The PD and the MOF shall be safe to use and be functional after the drop of 1.5 meters if no visible damage.

• Explosives used in ammunition shall be qualified in accordance with STANAG 4170.

• All materials used in PD and the MOF shall be chemically compatible with each other.

• The life cycle of PD and the MOF shall be at least 10 years from the purchase order date.

• The packages shall fulfill the international regulations of transporting dangerous goods ADR, RID, IATA and IMDG-C.

• The hazard classification of the PD and the MOF shall be tested and determined according to Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria given by UN.

• The product shall meet REACH-requirements.
