Redback to bring Army some sting
The Army will receive 129 new infantry fighting vehicles in response to Australia’s changing strategic environment.
At a cost of between $5 billion and $7 billion, the LAND 400 Phase 3 project will be one of the largest capability acquisitions in Army’s history.

Replacing the M113 armoured personnel carriers, which were acquired in 1964, the first Redback will be delivered in early 2027.

Australia signs USD2.4 billion contract with Hanwha for IFV requirement
The Australian Department of Defence (DoD) has signed a USD2.4 billion contract with Hanwha Defense Australia (HDA) to deliver 129 Redback infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) to the Australian Army under its Land 400 Phase 3 programme, HDA said in a press release on 8 December.

According to HDA, the contract includes the development and delivery of training system and support system components until Final Acceptance (FA) in 2029, with an initial support contract for the first five years following delivery.

Hanwha said the Redback deliveries will commence in 2027, with the final vehicle set to be delivered in late 2028. “A series of eight prototype vehicles will also be manufactured in both South Korea and Australia as the programme develops,” the company added.

According to the DoD, Redbacks will be operated by the army's 3rd Armoured Combat Brigade based in Townsville.

Land Forces 2024: Hanwha signs deals with Redback suppliers
The deal with Safran integrates the firm's PASEO Joint Fires day-and-night panoramic sight onto the Redback and the deal with Rohde & Schwarz is centred on the provision of an electromagnetic testing system for the vehicles. The contracts were announced at the Land Forces 2024 exhibition in Melbourne, which ends 13 September.

Safran confirmed to Janes that the PASEO model to be fitted onto the Redback will be the Crystal, which is described by the company as an “artillery forward observation, acquisition, and designation sight that relies on all features and performance of the PASEO”.

According to Safran, the PASEO Crystal is a cooled thermal imager, which operates in the 3–5 μm spectral bands and provides up to a 360° panoramic view of a scene. It incorporates a rangefinder of more than 7 km and a laser designator range of more than 6 km. It also features an embedded Onyx inertial navigation system, which Safran said can provide precise positioning in a global navigation satellite services (GNSS)-denied environment.
