Yesterday, a new delivery of Bolide-type missiles arrived. The EUR 2 million purchase will be used with the RBS-70 short-range air defence missile system ensuring more efficient air defence and improved Lithuania’s security.

The contract with the Swedish manufacturer SAAB Dynamics AB on acquisition of the laser-guided Bolide missiles for the RBS-70 short-range air defence missile system and MK-2-type missiles was signed in the autumn of 2022. Value of the purchased Bolide missiles stands at approx. EUR 34 million.

Saab has received a third order for the Mobile Short Range Air Defence (MSHORAD) system from the Lithuanian Defence Materiel Agency. The order value is approximately SEK 1.4 billion with deliveries 2026-2030.

Saab will deliver a third battery of the MSHORAD to the Lithuanian Armed Forces. The system will be integrated by Saab into the JLTV 4x4 vehicles manufactured by Oshkosh.

Lithuania continues strengthening air defence: order has been placed for the third Mobile Short Range Air Defence System (MSHORAD) with Sweden’s Saab Dynamics. The purchase stands at over EUR 119 million.

The acquired system comprises Giraffe 1X radars, RBS70 NG missile launchers and a C2 node. Separate elements of the system will be delivered to Lithuania in 2026–2029 m.

Lithuania will also sign a contract with Saab Dynamics on integration of the purchased elements with the JLTVs of the Lithuanian Armed Forces. The estimated contract stands at approx. EUR 11 million.

Saab has received an order for RBS 70 Bolide missiles from the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence. The order value is SEK 3 billion and deliveries are expected to take place 2028-2032.

The order is placed within a framework agreement for Saab’s short-range air defence missile solution RBS 70 NG between Saab, the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) and the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence.

The Lithuanian Armed Forces has added over EUR 5.7 million worth of AMRAAM 120B and SPIKE LR2 missiles, and 5,56×45 mm NATO BALL ammunition to its arsenal.

The AMRAAM missiles are used for medium range air defence with the NASAMS, of which Lithuania will have a new battery in the course of this year.

The estimated total cost is $214 million.

The Government of Lithuania has requested to buy an additional one hundred fifty-two (152) AIM 9X Block II Sidewinder tactical missiles; eight (8) AIM-9X Block II tactical guidance units; six (6) AIM-9X Block II captive air training missiles; U.S. Government and contractor engineering, technical, and logistics support services; and other related elements of logistics and program support that will be added to a previously implemented case whose value was under the congressional notification threshold. The original Foreign Military Sales case, valued at $19.5 million ($10.5 million in major defense equipment (MDE)), included sixteen (16) AIM-9X Block II Sidewinder tactical missiles; two (2) AIM-9X Block II tactical guidance units; training; weapon system support; training aids and devices; spare parts; and other related elements of logistics and program support.

Minister of National Defence Robertas Kaunas and Ambassador of South Korea in Lithuania Joyoung Jeon discussed potential cooperation in the areas of counter-drone systems and the small air defence capabilities.

“Lithuania takes into account not just quality and price but also terms of delivery, when buying air defence and counter-drone systems, so we are looking at different options. Looking ahead, we are weighing options of cooperation with the defence industry of South Korea in purchasing air defence systems: the Koreans area among the most trusted manufacturers of 30–40 mm air defence artillery, they could also deliver promptly,” said R. Kaunas.

In the counter-UAS segment, H-SHORAD is a low-altitude air-defence system that integrates a 3D AESA radar, a 30mm gun, a guided missile, and a jammer on a single platform. H-SHIELD is a distributed system that links a single detection and engagement-control vehicle (with an AESA radar, RF scanner, and AI-based control unit) to multiple strike vehicles. A laser air-defence weapon in service with the South Korean armed forces is also featured.
