The project aims to strengthen the synergy between individual soldiers and their teams through the adoption of the Soldier as System (SAS) and the Platoon as System (PAS) approaches.

“The Edge of Tomorrow” project incorporates networked warfare technologies including communications for the soldier and team level as well as TORCH-X-based applications for team and platoon levels. The various technologies include augmented reality goggles, a computerized assault rifle system, a digital head-mounted display system, hostile fire detection technology, a location-tracking system in GPS denied environments, tactile sleeves for navigation and command transmittance, and a voice command system (similar to systems used on smartphones).

Did you know that the current C14 and C3A1 sniper rifles will be replaced by C21 bolt-action multi-caliber sniper rifles? These will provide #CAF snipers with enhanced accuracy and a proven effective range of 1200m

  • Precision Grenadier System Virtual Industry Day
The PGS is envisioned to be a man portable integrated weapon system that enables precision engagements to destroy personnel targets in defilade and in the open with increased lethality and precision compared to the legacy M203/M320 grenade launchers. The PGS will provide an overmatch to comparable threat grenade launchers in near peer formations in future operating environments (jungle, urban, woodland, subterranean, desert, day/night). The PGS is envisioned to consist of a weapon, a fire control, and a suite of ammunition which enables the user to engage targets in defilade/cover, hovering unmanned aerial system (UAS) targets, conduct door breaching, engage close combat targets, and light armored targets.

Barrett and MARS Inc. team win U.S. Army xTech Soldier Lethality Competition with revolutionary 30mm Precision Grenadier System

Bild
MURFREESBORO, TN – The U.S. Army has announced that the MARS Inc, Barrett team has been selected as the winner of the xTech Soldier Lethality competition. In six months, this team of agile businesses were able to design, build, test, and demonstrate the effectiveness of a new 30mm grenade rifle system in support of the Army’s Precision Grenadier System (PGS) requirement. PGS is a soldier portable, shoulder fired, semi-automatic, magazine fed, integrated armament system (weapon, ammunition, fire control) that enables rapid, precision engagements to destroy personnel targets in defilade and Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) targets at close range.
As part of that journey, Barrett worked closely with small business innovator MARS Inc to bring their technology to life, AMTEC Corp to develop an entirely new family of 30mm shoulder fired munitions, and Precision Targeting to provide a fire control system customized for the AMTEC ammunition. This new ammunition family will have the full spectrum of capabilities required to achieve the US Army’s mission to provide over match on the modern battlefield. This includes, Programmable Air Bursting High Explosive (HE), Proximity Fuzed and Point Detonating HE, as well as a Close Quarter Battle Round.

THERMAL IMAGER SELECTED FOR NVSM PROJECT (28. November 2024)
In October, Thales Canada was awarded a $34.6 million contract to provide the Army with long-range handheld thermal imagers. The Sophie Ultima Handheld Thermal Imager (HHTI) is a lightweight system with an infrared channel offering “NATO tank recognition range performance of up to 6 kilometres,” the company stated. “The continuous optical zoom and wide 20-degree field of view enable operators to maintain visual contact with targets during detection, recognition, and identification phases, ensuring rapid and precise engagement.” It also includes an embedded geolocation capability to accurately locate targets. Delivery is expected by summer 2027.

The thermal imager is part of the Army’s multi-phased Night Vision System Modernization (NVSM) project. The first phase brought 200 handheld long-range laser range finders, to be delivered by summer 2025.

The second phase includes the medium-range thermal imagers as well as night vision goggles and laser aiming devices. In late October, Public Service and Procurement Canada issued a request for information for the laser aiming devices and the medium-range HHTI. PSPC also published a draft request for proposals for the night vision goggles. The final phase will involve augmented reality and thermal fusion.

The NVSM project has a budget of $565.6 million and is expected to achieve full operational capability by 2030 with a new suite of cutting-edge technology. At present, the Army’s most common night vision device is the monocular L3Harris AN-PVS-14, last upgraded 15 years ago. Thales will manufacture and maintain the Canadian customized Sophie Ultima at its Electro-Optics Center in Montreal, which will also provide comprehensive in-service support, “ensuring that the Canadian
Armed Forces benefit from a dedicated repair facility with rapid turnaround, reducing equipment downtime,” the company said.
