Italy to convert stored AEW-roled AW101s to amphibious support configuration
The Italian navy’s current rotorcraft inventory also includes 56 NH Industries NH90s: 46 in the NFH-model naval variant and 10 TTH-standard maritime transports. It also flies more than 20 aged Agusta-Bell AB212s, which are slated for retirement by 2032, and has started introducing the AW139 in a light support role.

Meanwhile, the same source indicates that the navy hopes to later this year conduct a first embarked trial with Leonardo Helicopters’ AW609 civil tiltrotor aboard Cavour. This will support its exploration of a future intra-theatre lift requirement.

Sikorsky Pushing X-2 For NATO, Italian Programs
Sikorsky will soon submit a proposal for NATO’s Next Generation Rotorcraft (NRGC) program based on the X-2 technology, Lemmo told reporters April 25 on the sidelines of the Army Aviation Association of America summit here. Sikorsky’s parent Lockheed Martin already has a contract to study open architecture plans for NATO.

The NRGC program, started in 2020, is a multinational project led by France, Germany, Greece, Italy and the UK to field a new fleet of medium multirole helicopters. In February, the organization called on industry to develop concepts for the program with the goal of fielding by 2040. A request for proposals calls for a common airframe for land-based and naval operations, with a minimum cruise speed of 180 kt. (207.1 mph) or more and a maximum takeoff weight of between 10-17 metric tons.

Lemmo says Sikorsky is also in discussions with Italy for a contract for the second phase of a study for a future, high-speed helicopter requirement.

Lockheed Martin Sikorsky Advances to Next Phase of Next Generation Rotorcraft Capability Program
The NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) has awarded Lockheed Martin Sikorsky a contract award to study integrated platform concepts that could fulfill NATO’s next generation rotorcraft requirements through its Next Generation Rotorcraft Capability (NGRC) program.

“Sikorsky is ready to design a rotorcraft prototype for NATO’s NGRC concept study to support defense and deterrence for an ever-changing global environment. Years of investment and rigorous flight testing with multiple X2 technology demonstrators have proven its ability to change the future airspace,” said Andy Adams, vice president of Sikorsky Future Vertical Lift.
Lockheed Martin Sikorsky’s European Industry Group includes Tier-1 aerospace suppliers, such as BAE Systems, ELT Group, ESG Elektroniksystem-und Logistik GmbH, GE Aerospace, Hellenic Aerospace Industry, Kongsberg, Liebherr-Aerospace Lindenberg GmbH, MAGroup, Malloy Aeronautics, SAFRAN, Rheinmetall and TERMA. This industry group will provide input as to how their world-class military products can support the X2 integrated platform concept approach to advance NATO’s capabilities and provide a next generation rotorcraft solution.
