Future Sensor-to-Effector (S2E) Network in the German Army
The artillery battalions of the medium forces and the tube artillery components of the division artillery will in future be equipped with the Remote Controlled Howitzer (RCH) 155mm, which has the same range as the PzH 2000. The RCH155mm will have a crew of two soldiers in the future. Until the wheeled systems arrive, planned from 2028, the PzH 2000 will be used as a substitute in the ArtyBn Medium Forces. It will thus make a substantial contribution to the growth of the new capabilities of the Medium Force Brigade category.

IAV 2025: Thales demonstrates DigitalCrew algorithm suite for situational awareness
Thales demonstrated DigitalCrew, a software package to enhance complex sensor inputs, at Defence iQ's International Armoured Vehicles (IAV) 2025 conference being held in Farnborough from 21 to 23 January.

Thales told Janes that DigitalCrew was being integrated onto the Bundeswehr's Boxer vehicles along with its Panoramic Above Armour Gimbal (PAAG) sighting system, as part of its Joint Fire Support Team (JFST) contract.

The system was also successfully tested in the desert in the Middle East in the third quarter of 2024, Thales revealed.

Usually mounted on a retractable vehicle mast, the PAAG's short-, mid-, and long-range field-of-view (FOV) cameras, short-wave infrared (SWIR) camera, and the thermal imager (TI) can detect ground or air targets up to 10 km away. Thales noted that some users have discussed mounting the PAAG on a static tripod, which is being explored, though external power and communications needs are challenges.

One of the functions of DigitalCrew is video combination, stitching all three videos from these three cameras with either the SWIR camera or TI, said Stewart MacPherson, head of Digital Strategy for Thales at its Glasgow sensor production site. DigitalCrew can also be integrated with non-Thales sensor systems.

Currently, FOV, SWIR, and TI feeds cannot all be combined, but that is in the development road map, added MacPherson.

The PAAG and DigitalCrew are designed for mid- to long-range use, beyond 200 m, with parallax errors from the different cameras generated in the combined image at shorter ranges.

Algorithm functions

DigitalCrew's suite of algorithms also provides artificial intelligence (AI) and non-AI enhancements, MacPherson said.

IAV 2025: Germany and Netherlands plan procurement of more Boxer armoured vehicles
Germany and the Netherlands are planning to jointly procure more Boxer armoured vehicles, Janes learnt at Defence iQ's International Armoured Vehicles (IAV) 2025 conference held under the Chatham House Rule in Farnborough from 21 to 23 January. The order for 150 Boxer infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) versions for Germany and 72 for the Netherlands has been delayed by the German national elections, to be held on 23 February, to the second or third quarter of 2025.

Joint procurement of the 222 Boxer IFVs is expected to result in economies of scale. Germany has so far ordered 551 Boxers, and delivery of 200 of the vehicles to the Netherlands was completed in 2014.

The Royal Netherlands Army deployed Boxers configured as IFVs to Lithuania starting in mid-2017. The vehicles were modified engineer variants, which are armed with the Kongsberg M151 Protector 12.7 mm machine gun, however there is a formal Dutch requirement to up-arm them with an automatic cannon of at least 30 mm in calibre.

The Dutch-German Boxer IFV will have minimum modifications, but separately, the two countries also plan to procure the Boxer Knifefish jamming variant in two versions: ultra-high frequency (UHF)/very high frequency (VHF) and high frequency (HF).

The UK is another country that plans to increase the size of its Boxer fleet. The first Boxer produced in the UK in December 2023 was displayed at IAV 2025.

Germany to increase artillery capability
RCH-155 has been selected by the UK Royal Artillery to meet its Mobile Fires Platform (MFP) and there will be a joint UK/Germany procurement which will offer cost potential savings.

A contract is expected to be placed with KNDS Deutschland soon for three RCH-155, two for Germany and one for the UK which will be used by joint trials and qualification before a production order is placed.

There will probably be minor differences for each user, and they could also incorporate feedback from their combat use in Ukraine.

Exact number of RCH-155 has not been determined but Shephard sources have stated that it could be as high as 350–400 units for the UK and Germany.

The original UK MFP requirement was for a total of 156 units which would equip four regiments of the Royal Artillery plus some for training and war reserve, as all AS90 have been passed to Ukraine, as well as ammunition.

The ARS fleet will be increased up to 84 which will be a mixture of more upgraded MLRS, currently called the MARS II, in Germany plus a new truck (8x8) mounted system called MARS III.

In addition, new artillery ammunition will be introduced plus new sensors through common co-ordination and control system plus improved Joint Fire Support Teams.
