Two unmanned aerial vehicles that entered Latvian airspace from russia have crashed in Latvian territory. Units of the National Armed Forces, the State Police, and the State Fire and Rescue Service are currently operating at the scene.
The National Armed Forces, together with NATO Allies, continuously monitor the airspace to ensure the capability to respond immediately to potential threats. The National Armed Forces have reinforced air defence capabilities along the eastern border by deploying additional units.
https://www.mod.gov.lv/en/news/two-unma ... hed-latviaNotice to Residents
Seek shelter indoors and close all windows and doors. If you observe a low-flying, suspicious, or dangerous object, do not approach it and call 112 immediately. The public will be informed once the threat has ended.
While the threat remains in effect, residents are urged to stay indoors.
On Thursday, May 7th, the National Armed Forces detected a potential aerial threat in the municipalities of Balvi and Ludza after air surveillance radars identified unmanned aerial vehicles entering Latvian airspace from russia. During the incident, two foreign drones crashed within Latvian territory, while a third crossed the country’s airspace and later exited it.
In immediate response to the detected threat, NATO Baltic Air Policing aircraft were deployed to patrol Latvia’s eastern border for several hours, operating under established operational protocols that permit the engagement of aerial targets only after visual identification has been confirmed and only when there is absolute certainty that such action would not endanger civilian lives and public safety.
Following a request from the National Armed Forces, the State Fire and Rescue Service issued cell broadcast alerts to residents in the municipalities of Ludza and Balvi, later extending similar alerts to Rēzekne municipality. During this operation, emergency services received several reports of a possible fire at an oil storage facility in Rēzekne. Upon arrival, responders discovered that four empty oil storage tanks had been damaged by an external impact. The fire was quickly extinguished by the State Fire and Rescue Service.
The incident is currently under investigation by the National Armed Forces and the State Police, and criminal proceedings have been initiated under Chapter 10 of the Criminal Law. While drone debris was identified at the oil storage facility, the search for the potential crash site of the second drone remains ongoing and will continue on Friday.
The National Armed Forces noted that the origin of the drones cannot yet be confirmed until the investigation is complete.
https://www.mod.gov.lv/en/news/unmanned ... -territoryrussia is responsible for the incident, as it continues its continuous attacks on Ukraine and employs electronic warfare weapons to repel counterattacks, which can alter the flight trajectories of Ukrainian drones.
As russia’s full-scale warfare in Ukraine continues, we cannot entirely avoid such or similar incidents. However, the National Armed Forces are doing everything possible to prevent such occurrences in the future. As the Russia`s full-scale war persists, similar incidents have occurred and continue to recur in other countries bordering Ukraine.

The number of countries participating in a Czech-led initiative to buy ammunition for Ukraine has halved since Prime Minister Andrej Babiš returned to office in December on a pledge not to make Czech citizens pay for Ukraine’s weapons.
Only nine countries are now funding the initiative, down from as many as 18 last year, according to Czech President Petr Pavel, a former Nato commander. The trend is raising concerns over burden sharing and the future of a project launched by the previous pro-EU government with Pavel’s strong backing.
"The initiative is still working, but the new difficulty is that only about nine member states are contributing financially,” Pavel told the FT. “This initiative has been delivering up to 50 per cent of all large calibre ammunition to the Ukrainians, so in this sense it cannot be replaced easily by anything else.”
Pavel said the initiative’s future should be among the issues discussed at the Nato summit in Ankara in July.
Pavel’s office declined to identify the countries that had recently withdrawn from the initiative. A western military official said Germany and some Nordic nations remained among the participants, but “some countries now feel that it is strange to pay for something that is not even properly supported by the ruling politicians of the lead country”.
https://www.ft.com/content/f5dd7bd9-6da ... 25a6b1a6=1During last year’s election campaign, Babiš threatened to stop the ammunition initiative altogether, criticising it for an alleged lack of transparency over how the money was used, and the extent to which it directly benefited Prague-based Czechoslovak Group. CSG, one of Europe’s largest ammunition producers, has acted as the Czech government’s main corporate partner in sourcing as well as recommissioning artillery shells from non-Nato countries on behalf of Ukraine’s western backers.
Michal Strnad, owner and chief executive of CSG, said the Babiš administration had also left the initiative in limbo for a few months after taking office because there was “some legal issue which the new government didn’t like, so it took some time to clarify”.
However, Strnad said it was too early to predict whether Kyiv would ultimately receive fewer shells this year from its western allies, also because some countries could now be using alternative channels to supply ammunition to Ukraine.
“Some of the donating countries basically said that they are not interested in financing it [the initiative] anymore, so they buy directly from us or from some other suppliers,” Strnad said. The initiative is “not dead, it’s still working, but it’s a bit slow”.
