Serbian exercise demonstrates UAE-supplied and indigenously developed loitering munitions

The Serbian Armed Forces (Vojska Srbije: VS) was noted operating both United Arab Emirates (UAE)-supplied and domestically sourced fixed-wing loitering munitions during a recent military manoeuvre.

Exercise ‘Vatreni udar 2024' (Fire strike 2024) held at the Pasuljanske Livade training ground in central Serbia on 4 July saw the use of the UAE-built EDGE Group SM1 and SM2 as well as the Serbian Ministry of Defence (MoD) Military Technical Institute (VojnoTehnički Institut: VTI)-developed Osica (Small Wasp) and Komarac-2 (Mosquito-2) loitering munitions.

While the larger SM2 was seen overflying outside the exercise area, the smaller SM1 actively participated in the exercise, crashing into a ground target with a simulated explosion.

Miloradović explained that the SM1 loitering munition shown at the exercise was operated by soldiers of the Niš-based Mixed Artillery Brigade (Mešovita artiljerijska brigada), which is a unit tasked to provide artillery support to the Serbian Army (Kopnena vojska Srbije: KoV). He gave no further details on SM1, except saying “it has [a] range far, far beyond that of the Osica”.

Also demonstrated at the exercise, Osica is described by the MoD as a loitering munition that can circulate the battlefield for up to 30 minutes at a distance of 20 km, and attack all targets, including armoured vehicles. It has a 1.5 kg warhead and can penetrate 500 mm of homogeneous steel. It is derived from the Yugoslav-made M79 Osa (Wasp) portable anti-tank weapon.

Serbia displays new radar during exercise

The Serbian Armed Forces (Vojska Srbije: VS) is deploying the DRS RADA Technologies' 3D multimission hemispheric radar (MHR), it was revealed during an experimental tactical live shooting Exercise ‘Vatreni udar 2024' (‘Fire strike 2024') held at Pasuljanske Livade training ground in Serbia on 4 July.

Known locally as Kobac-1 (Sparrowhawk-1), the MHR system is employed with the VS as a “primary sensor for [the] detection and identification of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and drones”, the exercise moderator described in a video published by local news company Alo.

FAB - BOV OT aus eigener Produktion

Die ursprünglichen gepanzerten BOV-Kampffahrzeuge wurden im ehemaligen Jugoslawien im Automobilwerk Maribor (Lkw-Marke TAM) im heutigen Slowenien hergestellt und am Militärtechnischen Institut in Belgrad entwickelt.

Der Vertrag zur Produktion von BOV OT-Panzerfahrzeugen wurde im Dezember 2022 zwischen dem serbischen Verteidigungsministerium und der FAP Corporation unterzeichnet. Damals wurden auch drei weitere Verträge unterzeichnet, darunter die Produktion von FAP-Lkw für den Bedarf der serbischen Streitkräfte.

Ein Jahr später, im November 2023, war der neu hergestellte Schützenpanzer BOV OT an der Demonstration neuer Ausrüstung der serbischen Armee auf dem Truppenübungsplatz Nikinca beteiligt :

Das Kampffahrzeug ist mit einem ferngesteuerten 12,7-mm-Turm bewaffnet, verfügt über seitliche Schießscharten und Rauchkammerwerfer und seine Einführung in den operativen Einsatz verbesserte die Manövrierfähigkeit, die Feuerkraft, die Durchführung von Angriffen aus der Bewegung und den Schutz der Infanterieeinheiten der serbischen Armee.

Serbien wird anlässlich des Staatsbesuchs des französischen Präsidenten Macron vom 29.-30. August den Kaufvertrag für zwölf Dassault "Rafale" im Wert von ca. 3 Mrd. EUR unterzeichnen. Laut "La Tribune" haben sich Frankreich und Serbien schon Anfang des Sommers über die Modalitäten geeinigt:

Contract to purchase 12 Rafale aircraft signed (29. August 2024)

A ceremony to exchange bilateral documents signed by Serbia and France was held today at the Palace of Serbia, in the presence of the President of the Republic and Supreme Commander of the Serbian Armed Forces, Aleksandar Vučić, and the President of France, Emmanuel Macron.

Minister of Defence Bratislav Gašić exchanged the signed contract for the purchase of Rafale aircraft and accompanying goods and services with the CEO of Dassault Aviation, Eric Trappier.

The total value of the contract for the purchase of 12 brand new aircraft and all accompanying equipment is € 2.7 billion.

Serbia acquires 12 Rafale fighters

Saint-Cloud, France, August 29, 2024 – In the presence of the President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron, and the President of the Republic of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, the Chairman and CEO of Dassault Aviation, Éric Trappier, today signed in Belgrade with the Minister of Defense of the Republic of Serbia, Bratislav Gašić, a contract for the purchase of 12 Rafale to equip the Air Force and Air Defence of the Serbian Armed Forces.
