Italy tees up $5 billion-plus program to build 1,000 combat vehicles (25. Januar 2024)
Italy will pick industrial partners to start work on a major new €5 billion (U.S. $5.4 billion) tracked fighting vehicle program within “a few months,” a senior Italian Army official has told Defense News.

Companies will be invited to launch feasibility studies for the program, which is expected to lead to a 1,000-vehicle purchase as Italy hurries to replace its aging Dardo vehicles, and as the war in Ukraine has put land combat back on the map.

Furthermore, with Italy determined to involve European firms, the program could prove a catalyst for industrial integration in the sector, as soon as Rome can decide who to pick from potential partners like Italy’s Leonardo and Iveco, French-German firm KNDS, and Germany’s Rheinmetall.

“From a programmatic point of view, all documents related to the operational requirement have been approved and the Ministry of Defence has allocated an important part of the necessary budget,” said Maj. Gen. Francesco Olla, the head of the Army’s General Planning Financial Division. “Therefore, the procurement activities will begin in the next few months.”

Formerly called the Armored Infantry Combat System and now renamed the Army Armored Combat System, or A2CS, the program foresees a vehicle able to share targets with other platforms; use a wide range of ammunition, including airburst rounds; and tackle threats from improvised explosive devices, anti-tank missiles and swarming drones.

Leonardo details its 30 mm X-Gun and announces first two customers

Bild

Bild
Leonardo is developing two turrets for land applications, one unmanned and one manned, which will join the HITFIST family, with which they share many commonalities. The former will have a mass of around 1,400 kg without ammunition, a total of 150 rounds being available, with a basic protection around Level 2. Reloading will be conducted under armour, and the turret will have Hunter-Hunter, Hunter-Killer and Killer-Killer operating modes. A 7.62 mm machine gun mounted over the main gun will provide short range suppressive fire, antitank missiles being considered as part of the turret growth potential. The adoption of a slip ring allows continuous 360° training while the elevation arc is -10°/+60°, no speed and acceleration data being available. Here too the optronic suite includes a day camera, with detection/recognition/identification ranges of 13.4/6.5/3.7 km, while the thermal camera provides DRI of 11.4/7.4/3 km, a laser rangefinder with a 12 km range ensuring target distance measuring.

As for the two-man turret, this will lack the Hunter-Hunter mode, will be ready for adding two antitank missiles, one per side, and will feature a number of survivability systems, first of all a Level 4 ballistic protection kit, which will bring its mass up to 2,500 kg without ammunition, which in this case will be up to 230. It will feature the NATO Generic Vehicle Architecture (NGVA). Leonardo considers with interest the Italian Navy VBA wheeled amphibious vehicles programme, which second batch should include fire support vehicle, the unmanned version being a perfect fit. As for the two-man version, this eyes the programme for the Italian Army future armoured infantry fighting vehicle, known as A2CS (Army Armoured Combat System, formerly AICS). Although mock-ups are already there, the first HITFIST prototype turret should be available a few months after the Lionfish, as potential programmes should materialise at a later moment compared to naval ones.

Cash in hand for armored vehicles, Italy weighs its clout in Europe
To meet the target, work is now picking up pace on Italy’s A2CS program to build 1,050 tracked vehicles to replace its aging Dardo vehicles, making it Europe’s biggest current land warfare program.

“This year is going to require a lot of work to make that deadline,” said a source knowledgeable of the program who declined to be named because he was not allowed to speak on the record.

Earlier this year the Italian army handed local defense giant Leonardo and Italy’s Iveco Defence Vehicles the task of recruiting European partners who can bring expertise and platforms to the table, in the knowledge that Italy cannot afford the time or expense involved in starting a program from scratch.

The industry grouping is expected to have a design ready for the Army by Christmas.
Planners intend to order the vehicle in 16 configurations, including combat, anti-tank, reconnaissance, 120mm light tank, anti-air, mortar carrier, ammunition carrier, command post and ambulance. The aim is to produce twenty prototypes by 2027 or 2028, with deliveries to follow between 2029 and 2041.

The Panther KF51 developed by Rheinmetall will be the basis for the new main battle tank to replace the Ariete in the Italian army. The Italian AICS programme involves the procurement of over 1,000 armoured combat systems in 16 variants in the future. In addition to the classic infantry fighting vehicle, there will be anti-aircraft (Skyranger), reconnaissance and anti-tank versions. All models will have a modular design and the Rheinmetall Lynx infantry fighting vehicle shall form the technological basis.

Dem Honvedelmi Miniszterium zufolge handelt es sich dabei um einen "Lynx" aus der Fertigungslinie in Zalaerszeg:
