8.7.5 Transport- och specialflygförband

Transport- och specialflygförbanden består av tre skvadroner, tidigare benämnda divisioner: transportflygskvadronen, specialflygskvadronen samt statsflygskvadronen. Därutöver är Sverige del av en internationell militär transportflygorganisation, Heavy Airlift Wing (HAW). HAW är ett samarbete mellan tolv Natoländer, som samäger tre transportflygplan av typ C-17 Globemaster III.

Specialflygskvadronen ansvarar för bland annat luftburen radarspaning och signalspaning. Förutsättningarna att möta väpnat angrepp och hävda den svenska territoriella integriteten gynnas av tidig förvarning. Detta kräver i sin tur ett gott underrättelseläge. Flygburna underrättelse- och spaningsplattformar är viktiga för att kunna upptäcka flygplan, fartyg eller andra mål på stora avstånd. Detta är också ett viktigt svenskt bidrag i en Natokontext.

Specialflygskvadronen är utrustad med två signalspaningsflygplan S 102 B, två radarövervaknings- och stridsledningsplan S 100 D ASC-890 samt två persontransportflygplan TP 100. Radarövervaknings- och stridsledningsflygplan S 106 Global Eye är planerat att ersätta S 100 D i perioden 2027–2030. Försvarsberedningen konstaterar att planeringen behöver påbörjas för att ersätta TP 100 efter 2030.

Sweden is to add to its order of two Saab S 106 GlobalEye airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft, at the same time as fast-tracking the type's entry into service.

The Swedish government made the disclosures as part of a wider announcement of military aid to Ukraine published on 29 May. In the announcement, the government said that its commitment to donate one of the Swedish Air Force's (SwAF's) two Saab ASC 890 AEW&C airframes would be backfilled by an increased and accelerated order of the GlobalEye.

“The donation [of a Saab ASC 890 AEW&C aircraft] will entail a temporary decrease of Sweden's defence capability, which will be addressed by procuring additional S 106 GlobalEye aircraft and advancing previous orders for two new GlobalEye aircraft,” the government announcement on the military aid package to Ukraine said.

The Swedish government contracted Saab in June 2022 to deliver two GlobalEye aircraft, with the option for two more.

Sweden is to add to its order of two Saab S 106 GlobalEye airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft, with a third being ordered on 27 June.

Saab and the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (Försvarets materielverk: FMV) have signed a contract for one of the two GlobalEyes that were options to the original order from June 2022, valuing the deal at approximately SEK2.6 billion (USD250 million). With the Swedish Air Force (SwAF) saying the first two aircraft will now be delivered “sooner than the original delivery date” of 2027, this is due to be handed over in 2029.

Taking up the option of this third aircraft is related to Sweden's announcement in May that it is to donate one of the SwAF's two Saab ASC 890 AEW&C airframes to Ukraine, while accelerating the GlobalEye's entry into service.
